Thread: AI Interaction

    AI Interaction

I know this has been discussed before but I'm wondering if AI interaction will be fixed or if it is possible to fix via a mod. I understand they want to make sure game play isn't slow but I just don't understand why there isn't the option for AI to contact you. I'm no programmer but it seems like it should be fairly simple to impliment since it works well in single player... This fix would make the game quite a bit better in my opinion.

I agree it needs to be fixed. Unfortunately, any fix via mod is impossible until they release the DLL so we're stuck wondering if they'll ever officially fix it in a patch

This is the only reason I stopped playing Civ 5. My gf and I tend to only play MP coop against AI games, so this is understandably a huge drawback/disappointment between Civ 5 and Civ 4. We check back after every patch for this feature. We're hopeful it's still on the devs to do list.

So this is from a recent G&K interview:

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/03/09/ci...gner-ed-beach/

"PCG: You mentioned spy’s intrigue system, which lets us peek at what the AI is planning. How will that work in multiplayer?

Beach: Yeah, intrigue doesn’t work in multiplayer. You picked up on that.

PCG: Is it completely turned off, or could we use it on AI opponents?

Beach: I think the current plan is just to have it turned off."

Honestly, I was hoping that MP AI diplomacy would be fixed, with interactions and everything, but by the sound of this it looks like they have no intention of making MP AI comparable to SP AI.

Why would you want multiplayer AI anyway? The whole point of playing multiplayer is to play against other players. If I want to play AI I would ask Firaxis to bring in IBM thinking machine thing that plays chess but make it work for Civ V. Anyway multiplayer AI seems like a waste of developers time. Maybe improve the code so we can play 4v4 5v5 and make it more stable to start with...just my two cents.

Because some people like to play mixed games, or just play the base SP game but with their significant other, or want to play a large game with people they know and don't have enough friends that play civ available to fill all the slots. And actually, I know a lot of people that like playing with some AI slots in MP as a lot of the base game mechanics involves manipulating the AI and they want to use those mechanics against each other. Not to mention, even if you are a full MP player, all those times a player drops out of the game and the AI takes over the slot or if you can't find a last player... well, I guess that slots just wasted. It's not even a matter of wasting development time, as you're arguing. The quote makes it sound like they are deliberatly turning off game mechanics in MP. Plus, MP AI slots are just another example of something in the game but poorly implemented and not working correctly (not to mention worked correctly in Civ IV).

Besides, it's not really for you to judge what's the right way to play a game or look down on other people for playing that way... just my two cents.

In no way did I mean to look down or judge what way to play the game. I was only mentioning that the point of multiplayer is to play multiplayer. There are leagues out there to play to make sure u don't have drops. Also I am a full MP player. So I am biased. I just think that its not a matter of skill with AI its a matter of manipulating the AI to do what you want (for example stealing a worker from city-state and making peace the turn after). Or going to war with AI just to make them trade their resources/gold to you. But I agree my post may have seemed wrong and I apologize if it was misinterpreted. I really hope you check out some of the multiplayer leagues if you haven't already. You will be surprised at the level of gameplay.

Multiplayer encompasses more than just player vs. player. I'm sure you've heard of co-operative multiplayer, which is a mode that I enjoy a lot with my better half. So I don't see adding AI contact during a multiplayer game as a waste. It may appear to be a waste to you or others that are only interested in player vs. player. The audience for Civ V is large and there are many modes to play and as such there will be requests on all fronts. I don't think anyone except 2K is in a position to say spending time on one feature is more worthwhile than another.

In any case, I hope this feature gets added. Until it does, there is no real draw for me in Civ V and I'll continue to have buyers remorse. While Civ V was a step forward in many respects, it was a step backwards too compared to the sheer features and game modes that Civ IV offered.

Same for me. I want to play multiplayer with one friend only and combat against AI... problem is, AI is retarded.

Well this is a misconception, most people in these forums think the AI MP play is inferior to SP when actually they are the same. The AI will expand normally, it will declare war and accept deals exactly in the same way as in SP. The only difference is that the AI does not contact human players for any reason other than to declare war but consider this. In SP the AI contacts you only for the following:

    1) Open borders for open borders
    2) Shall we declare war on...
    3) Something annoying like don't buy any more land near my territory/or expand/ or city state related

This is the only difference when playing MP games against the AI, also note that negative or positive AI diplomacy modifiers work normally on MP games. To be honest I much prefer the AI on MP it is not retarded it is lean and efficient as it should be.

They also contact for trading resources, albeit at ridiculous rates.

You're trying to explain that these are small differences, but in reality they play a pretty large dynamic on the diplomacy front. And once the AI diplomacy is made smarter as is promised in G&K, I can only say that makes it even more desirable to have AI contact human players in an MP setting.

I sure hope that's to come in G&K or I'll likely steer clear of it. Civ V is such a big step backwards in general MP playability compared to Civ IV. Until they have parity with each other, I won't be likely to spend anymore on it. It's a shame really, I really want it to succeed.

They are small cosmetic differences, no difference in actual gameplay on MP where anyway you focus on the human players who usually pose the real threat. GaK is another discussion, we haven't seen the expansion yet. Let's reserve judgement until the release.

Well. The new patch did not make the AI interact in MP games either. Giving up on mp in this game i think. I dont see the point with MP if you cannot communicate with AI either. Not everyone play with only humans u know.

While my friend and I sure do get annoyed by the AI not contacting humans in multi (we play a lot of 1v1v1v1v1v1 with 2 humans and 4 AI) I do not feel it is as game breaking as some of the people on this board. I just try to contact them more frequently than I normally would and while I know it doesn't make the AI perfect by any stretch of the imagination it does, in my mind, prevent these types of games from being unplayable to me. I understand that might not be good enough for other people and do understand how this could ruin the game for some.

Considering the developers just put in multiplayer animations, the most screamed about thing I have seen on these forums about this game since it's release, I would think fixing the AI to contact humans in multi would be something that they might turn their attention to next, considering that is probably the second most talked about topic on the forums. Or at least it seems that way to me.

I think the AI also can contact humans in SP to Friend or Denounce them? Two other things the AI can't do in MP?

They still denounce you and they accept friendship requests in the same way as in Single Play. Ok I agree that not being contacted for friendship requests is annoying but this is the only annoyance. By reading some of the posts above you would think the AI functionality is completely broken when its not. Only some minor details missing and we should focus on them (like friendship requests) rather than saying there is no point etc

Cool, I wasn't for sure if they could even denounce humans in multi and I agree that them not contacting you kinda bites but that doesn't really break the game for me.

Yeah, forgot to say they also accept Research Agreements.

Well I have never been contacted by an AI during a MP game unless I have been doing the contacting. I find your experience totally different to the one I have.

My biggest issue with it is that when you meet them they dont show up and say hi either...

Another example of someone that just comes here and posts without even reading what has been said before. Where did I say that the AI contacts you???? Do you actually read before you post? I just said that the AI contacts you for pointless reasons in SP games and this feature would not add much to MP gameplay i.e. MP is not completely broken as some people claim..

Well this is a forum which by definition is about exchange of opinions and ideas. I thought that registering and posting in these forums means that you have some willingness to participate in meaningful discussions about the game. If you don't care what I think why did you reply to my post? The way I see it is that either you have solid arguments to back up your opinions or you don't and you get frustrated. Let me just repeat: I said the AIs will accept deals but not contact you; unfortunately you have to go to them on MP but this does not mean MP is completely broken.

The AI performs no interaction with the player in G&K MP.

You got to be kidding me... I am soooo gonna consider not supporting this developer anymore... That is just too weak effort I am afraid.

If you're playing Multiplayer, isn't the main reason to interact with humans anyway?

Yes but many people (including myself) like to play a long game with 1 or 2 other people, filling in the rest of the slots with AI.

I dont understand why the AI interaction has been removed, it was in all previous versions of civ.

Apparently they want the AI to come and say hello. They don't seem to be able to understand that the AI currently doesn't have anything interesting to say. They don't have a gameplay issue, they have an immersion issue..I can understand their point. Probably I would care about that 10 years ago too, when I was younger. By the way I play against the AI too with my friends on MP and we don't really mind about the AI "silence"; see above for the main reasons

You're pretty much right, but there's definitely things to be lost. In my SP game, Alexander notified me of Japan scheming against me. This was important information because I was focused on my other flank. I moved some scouting units towards the Japanese empire and sure enough I saw Japan's army making it's way towards me, despite us having no poor relations up to that point. So I repositioned my forces and was prepared to meet the Japanese attack when they launched it.

Sadly, that scenario above doesn't work in MP for two reasons:

    1. Intrigue does not work in MP
    2. Even if it did, the AI cannot contact me in MP.

For someone like me who plays with my significant other or a friend with the rest of the world populated by AI, it definitely results in a... flatter experience. With G&K the diplomacy seems to be working a little better as well, but again that's unavailable to we MP/coop players.

What truly baffles me, though, is this is something that could easily be handled by a game option toggle:
    [*] AI Contacts Players

Done. Some simple check like this is probably already being done, it's just not exposed to the host to enable/disable. Even were it not, it seems to be an easy change. It's not asking for new features to support MP but rather to take out the code that's creating a different ruleset for MP.

Ok all my posts apply to vanilla CIV and not the expansion. ~I haven't played GaK yet so I cannot comment about that. I would prefer to have full AI functionality on MP too don't get me wrong. I just don't see the lack of AI contact as a dealbreaker.

  35. #35
Completely understand, civdiss, we all come from different perspectives on what really adds to the game and what is trivial or a side issue. I wasn't trying to argue with you in the post above (sorry if it came across that way), just providing what I thought was a cool example of why I would like to see it added to MP.

    I agree goodgimp

I am hoping that when the Pitboss patch finally arrives it will also include a few things. Namely
    -AI Interaction
-The option for Turn based moves (even their manual says simil turns isnt for everyone yet provides no alternative)

I know these arent the be all and end all for many people, but I am sure there are also many people who would like to see these added. From a non-developer these dont look like they would be particularly difficult to add either? Since it is effectively just the existing hotseat on the internet.
