A lil issue about Mafia 2 installation

Hey guys, I just got the game, it's awesome (love the first one), but I installed the game with steam and I can't find the icon in my desktop, this game only works with steam right?, I need to join steam everytime I want to play it?, thanks

No, I have the dvd version, but I was reading the info of the game and it says I have to start steam first everytime I want to play the game
