    Nvidia 6800GTX not good enough?

I know the card is old and discontinued, but is it really so bad that it can't run Bioshock without crashing?
So far I've only been able to play for 10 minutes before the system reboots itself, I guess this is over heating. I have an Arctic Cooling system in place on the card.
Should I invest in a new card (I'm low in funds, being a student and all), even a cheap 8600GT?

Well if you provided your full system specifications we would be better able to help you.

Other parts of your system could be causing an issue rather than your Graphics Card, though I'm sure investing in a 8600 GT would provide a massive improvement.

Sorry, I did mean to put the rest of my specs up, somehow forgot.

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0Ghz
    2gb Corsair DDR2 RAM
    MSI K9N Diamond Mobo
    600W PSU
    Nvidia 6800GTX running Forceware drivers 162.50 (163.44 won't install)

    Here's my specs:

    p4 2.4Ghz
    1 gig ddr ram
msi 6580 mb with 845gl chipset (intel)
    windows xp pro sp2
    420 gigs hd space
    geforce 6800 gt slightly overclocked
    sound blaster live! sound bd

I'm able to play the game up to 1024x768 with most graphics options
turned on, and I get around 30-40 frames a second, the generally runs ok,
had to turn off high-def shaders because of crashes, once that was off the
    game ran fine..

    What are your temps?

    Hah, this is comedy gold.

If you really have any problems you should realize there's pretty much nobody who can help you except some seasoned IT guy who "might" have some idea how to fix these issues.

Tech support and developers (even when around, which they aren't for 2K) at best will link you to a FAQ. And if you email them and say you did everything on the FAQ, they will respond that you should look at the FAQ. HAHAHAHA.

    Helpful.

In response to the temp question.
Sitting on an idle system are as follows, in degrees celcius

    CPU-38 System-40 nForce-77 GPU1-55

They don't go much higher while in game, apart from the CPU which reaches 49 and the chipset up to 81. I have no idea what temps are safe and what aren't.

55C is well within the range of safe operating temperatures for the NV4x series GPUs. It would be more helpful, however to know exactly which version of the 6800XT you have as there are three based on three different cores (NV40,NV41,and NV42). In addition, some have a 128-bit memory interface and some have a 256-bit interface. Do you know the specific brand and model number of your video card and is the card a PCI-E or an AGP card?

My mistake, it's a 6800GT, it would seem.
PCI-E, 256MB memory. No idea which core it's based on, sorry.
Is it just me or is the chipset temp a bit high? I have one wonky 180mm system fan, but an open case.

You have an NV45 then, as that's the only PCI-E version of the 6800GT available. The 6800GT should be more than enough to run the game at Medium Settings, possibly with some high.

The rebooting sounds like a blue screen. Windows XP automatically reboots to hide the fact that a blue screen of death occurred (after Microsofts claims that Windows XP doesn't have such a thing as a blue screen) so you need to disable that "feature".

Please follow the instructions here : http://www.tweakxp.com/article36976.aspx

After doing such, run the game and if a blue screen of death occurs, write down the error message and post it here.

    Right, I've done that.
The error message that came up was:

    0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xB94A53DC, 0xB6A95BC0, 0x00000000)

    KMWDFILTER.SYS - Address B94A53DC base at B94A4000

    Hope this helps.

I was getting bsod's myself, I fixed them by doing the follwoing:

To debug this error, use the special pool option of Driver Verifier. If this fails to reveal the driver that caused the error, use the Global Flags utility to enable the special pool by pool tag.

For information about the special pool, see Driver Verifier.

An alternate method is to open the \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Cont rol\Session Manager\Memory Management registry key. In this key, create or edit the ProtectNonPagedPool value, and set it equal to DWORD 1. Then reboot. Then the system will unmap all freed nonpaged pool. This will prevent drivers from corrupting the pool. (This does not protect the pool from DMA hardware, however.)

If this doesn't affect your situation, you can always put your registry back
    like it was...

    Hope this helps!

Resolved by removing wireless mouse drivers (of all things), running like a charm on 1440x900 with full effects.
    Cheers for the help damicatz.

Your post can easily be considered as trolling. Try and post something useful if you do wish to post.

Glad to know the problem is fixed. Which mouse drivers did you have to remove for the game to work correctly?
Do you still have the same mouse plugged in?

The mouse is a Trust wireless lazer mouse, plug and play and working without any drivers so I don't know why I had in install drivers in the first place.
Windows was linking me to some Tevion driver, I've deleted all traces of it now and can't remember which exact driver it was.

Windows comes with standard mouse drivers that work on any USB mouse (including wireless, since the wireless receiver looks like a wired mouse to the computer). However, in order to access all of the features of the mouse, and possibly, to use it at it's higher DPI settings, you'll need special drivers.

Plug & Play = No drivers needed, Windows can use a Generic driver.

I know what plug and play means. There was obviously some reason, now forgotten, that I decided to install drivers, perhaps to use zoom buttons or something. Who knows.
