Civ V as Multiplayer is simply terrible.

I tried two Multiplayer games with one other person using the Duel Map and a 100 Turn Limit and time controls which worked out to a two hour limit for the game. We allowed each other just a single city and excluded AI players, City States and Barbarians. It was a disaster with each of us barely able to reach each other's city within the 2 hours game limit. Larger maps would have even been worse and saving MP games would end with one of us not able to continue at a mutually agreeable day and time.

For MP to work under those conditions it really needs a much smaller map than the Duel Map.

Thus, Civ V is really only good for Single Player due to extensive graphics and lack of a game server.

    In contrast:

For Multiplayer the web based space game of Ferion is far better for Multiplayer contests with a game server of It's own and minimal graphics to slow it down. It allows up to 50 players or more to play at once with each participating at times of their own convenience. It lasts for about one month and is turn based with moves processed 24/7 each hour. It is free to play if one accepts ads on the various game screens. To eliminate the ads, one must pay a nominal fee.

That game also has a novel feature. If you are in their server for 14 hours in any 24 hour period, you receive a warning. If you are in their server for 16 hours in that same period, you are banned for 8 hours to get sufficient sleep to protect your health. Civilization is very addictive as well and should provide a safety feature as well for time spent. Personally, I limit myself to just one hour of Civ V each day to prevent myself from overusing the game and possibly damaging my health.

Unless Civilization develops a new version in that direction, it will always be just a single player game. However, I find it very enjoyable as a single player game and still get lots of enjoyment from it a year after I purchased it.

Playing the full 6,000 game years using a Standard Map I won at Prince Level taking 23 hours, lost at Emperor Level in just 2 hours and am now playing at King Level. I had played earlier using only the Duel Map and took about 5 hours with those games. I am now in my 48th game after 304 hours of game play.

What map script were you using? And were you playing with high sea level on? Duels are played a lot at Civplayers and we don't have that much of an issue with the settings. We tend to use the skirmish map as it is designed for MP, but others are used too.

Well if you both only had your capital then yeah that understandable. The wars start when you actually have to fight for map control and plant more cities.

It was sarcasm at the time, but the latest patch did clean up much of the headaches (end turn delay / lag). I can play "standard" maps now lol!!!!!
