    Jumping the Shark

So if the current discussions in these forums are any indication, Civ V in its current patched incarnation may have jumped the shark.

So we've now got a serious bible school going on, concerns with some game design points previously well discussed, the odd bug report and lamentations that the game is done. The game whiners, haters and flamers all seem to be gone, no one if offering up new discoveries etc. and the discussion is mostly just downright civil with topics coming up for the second or third or more time. In the support forum, its a few late adopters seeming to have platform issues. In strategy its some arcane playing points or rehash of prior discussions.

In the 80's someone said history was over.... and then the world changed. So not saying Civ V is over but we really need an update or change of some sort to get the forum fires and game passion burning again!

Does a forum need burning passion? Civ 5 is still being played by a huge amount of people every day. The fans aren't going anywhere. Much as I would like some new info, it's not a big deal to wait. There are so many good games coming out in the coming weeks, anyway.

Jumping the shark? Had to checked that out on wiki, now enlightened (or am I?) Thanks oblio. I agree the forum has got stale and needs re-igniting. That needs a catalyst. Anticipation of the 'announcement' is suffercating us. DLC, patch, expansion. Some clue please K2.

I would appreciate a quick post just letting us know if they're done with the game or not. It's been so long I'm having my doubts now about an expansion but I just can't see them not putting one out.

Now that LA Noire's out for the PC (downloading as I type), I suspect my Civ V time and forum visits will be severely reduced unless I hear word or more releases. I'm sure I'll still play a game or two from time to time but there are so may great games coming out that Civ V really has been left in the dust for me.

It seems silly for 2K to let this happen. Even a small blurb about something great upcoming would be enough to keep the forum buzzing. If they're not going to release anything more, they really should say so. I'd be pretty peeved if we hear in a few months that Civ V's done. Firaxis/2K will have use up a lot of good will from yours truly.

How did Civ V jump the shark? Isn't that suppose to mean something happened (like in a movie) that should't really have happened becaue it makes no sense, like when Fonzi (From Happy Days) jumped a shark. It's 2:00am so I don't see the reference for Jumping the Shark.

I thought Jump the Shark meant that something has overstayed its welcome.

I don't know if I would say that about Civ V but certainly the vanilla version's getting in need of an update to the gameplay.

Jump the Shark generally means that something has no original ideas and should be abandoned by the creators. See Happy Days' episode where Fonzi jumps a shark (the name of the trope. I'm pretty sure it's a trope. Go to TV Tropes to check, but you can't blame me for how long you spend wasting your life there).

    be real confusing if not...

OT: I'll be playing til there's a Civ VI, whatever the situation with patches and bugs and such. (should be noted, I don't often do MP, and when I do it's just RL buds) I tried to play IV a few weeks ago and it felt like trying to go back to an old Atari 2600 game (ok not quite)

    sharks jumped: 0 (my opinion)

I don't know if "jumped the shark" is the correct term...

Civ V vanilla has reached middle age. The forum is now focused on troubleshooting the odd issue, speculating on the future, and wandering about drunkenly in search of a topic that people will actually discuss. Should an expansion or Civ VI be announced, the forums will spring back to life and we'll get back on topic. It's not a new phenomenon.

The term "Jumping the Shark" was coined by Jon Hein on his tvguide website (now of the Howard Stern show on Sirius) after seeing Fonzie jump a shark on Happy Days to refer to a tv program that had peaked and had entered its decline (ie captured its maximum audience and had started to leak viewers such that the audience was increasingly concentrated down to its die hard core). The shark jump was a stunt to hold audience after the Fonzie character was grealty softened. My suggestion is that Civ V has done just this with new sales only to the few very late adopters and players starting to migrate to other games, take a break from the game, reduce playing time etc.

Yes its normal for a game, tv show, book, movie ands so on to have this happen. Its also about this time that a sequel, expansion, spinoff or other signficant change comes out to revitalize the property and start the cycle over..... so its expansion time or close to it if the publisher doesn't want to lose the wider audience but only if that's what they are planning to do. And if its let it die, its on it way to doing so without action. As for Civ 6, we'd would have heard they had hired a team so that's not likely to be in the cards for a while.

Lol, this thread made me laugh. Nice posts...

Also, I always believed "jumping the shark" was used when something is declining and it desperately (and pathetically) does something over-the-top and ridiculous to try and recover but fails.

I personally don't believe Civ 5 actually jumped the shark.

(Though, it was released with Giant Death Robots in the game... hmm... did the "series" jump the shark? just kiddin')

    "Jumped the Shark"...
    "Nuked the Fridge"...

All I know is that I won't be purchasing anymore Civ titles sight unseen. From now on I will wait until the game has been out awhile before I decide to purchase.

Truly the end of an era.

CivRevV, what you could have been...

Spielberg claims it was entirely his idea. And they're making a fifth one anyway.

This is the end of an era. And a beginning of a new one. The beginning of a new civ.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Civ V's "putting the leaders in their surroundings", but that ended up being very inadequate. Yeah, a couple of different facial expressions or body language depending on what they were saying to you, but no real diverse verbal interplay.

And why do Alexander and Kahn appear on horses even before they discover animal husbandry?

For me, the whole leader thing turned out to be a load of "meh".

Haaaaa ! "Les Jours Heureux" for us frenchies speaking... that is not a series who will rejuvenate me

But for the discussion, I am still heavily playing Civ V and it is the most modern game on my PC actually (I think).
What will really make me happy would be a Alpha Centauri 2 with current tech.
For now, Civ V is fine, until next one/new extension.

And never forget that the future will be better tomorrow.

No way has the series jumped the shark. Civ V still has roughly 15,000 people playing every single day which puts it in the top 10 most played games on Steam. Yeah, an expansion or meaty DLC would be pretty awesome right now, but otherwise, the game is still a lot of fun, especially with the regular patching we got.
