On a lighter note, I just wanted to get a poll of what led us to enjoy Civ Rev...
For me the original Command and Conquer set the stage for my ultimate fascination with this game...
If were talking original/first video game played, would I be dating myself by disclosing that my Uncle Philip bought the 1975 Christmas release of Pong (Sears brand) for all the nephews...?

My all-time fav game is Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri (and its ext.pack Alien Crossfire) -- I still think it is the best civ game ever. The only problem is that MP games take too long in it. Ever since I spent countless hours playing that game, I try out every new civ game, so that led me to CivRev.
I wish firaxis has brought more of the depth over from SMAC to CivRev. I still would prefer to play SMAC if I could find opponents for MP... Unfortunately, its AI is just as easy to abuse as it is in CivRev, so SP games are too boring.
My first video game was a dungeon crawler for the TRS-80. Also played Wizardry and Ultima on Apple II, mostly at a friend's house due to Luddite parents. I have a vague memory of a broken Pong machine (first console game that just had one bad game hardwired in) where the game would hang if the "ball" ever went off the left side of the machine. Not a lot of fun to be had there. I did manage to get an Atari 2600 into the house, but it didn't really have any strategy games.
Of course there were a lot of games in between. I knew about Civilization but didn't play it. I thought it was just a video game version of the boardgame, but apparently it's not. I got Alpha Centauri on a friend's recommendation so that put Sid Meier on my radar. When CivRev came out, I liked the idea of a console version of this kind of game because I simply don't have 8-12 hours to play one game. Shortening it to 2 hours (or a lot less) was a great idea.
I played a little, beat Deity, then found this forum. I didn't think I'd like MP, but got into it on the recommendation of guys like Grayson. Armed with MorteEterna's early strategies and my own hyper-competitiveness, I won a lot of games, playing random civs almost from the very beginning. The rest is history!
My first console strat game was civ 2 on the ps1. I couldn't stop playing that game and I still have it along with my ps1.
First game I can remember having any real influence was Pitfall on the Atari 2600. A full 10 years later before I found a love for strategy/tactical games. Populous, that's been mentiond a few times, Sim (City?) and I have great memories of playing North and South vs a bunch of mates (on mates Amiga) - winner stays on, lol.

Then I discovered Age of Empire after trying the demo download when it first came out, fell in love with it and went out the next payday and bought it. That lead me to buy one of the PC Civ games years ago (don’t remember which one) , I liked it a lot, but always felt like I was playing an AoE knock off game.
Then I kind of lost interest in playing resource intensive PC games for a while, got more into spending my PC time learning to write code and stuff, bought the PS3 at the time mainly to be a BluRay player for movies (best alternative at the time). Somehow ended up playing Ratchet and Clank, which I liked because it was a lot like original Quake (but with goofy characters I over looked). Ran across Civ Rev about a year ago and have been addicted ever since. It doesn’t have the long play I like, but find since it generates a new unknown map every time I play that I can keep playing it over and over, unlike other long play games where once you’ve played them once it’s kind of done.
In the late 70s I had to write my own games for the Commodore PET, then in the early 80s I got hooked on Wizardry on the Apple II. My first military game was GATO (WWII Submarines) on the Apple.
what led me to enjoy civrev is my appreciation for history :P
actually i saw this game in a magazine before it came out, during the week before my dad took me to work with him.. (getting dirt out of a pool with a shovel) ... but he gave my 500 dollars lol.. and i bought civrev thinking i was gonna be running around being napoleon on his mythical horse... like if i were link(from the legend of zelda) the twilight one..
but i didnt know it was a board game.. when i reached monarchy for the first time i was like .. "OMG im a king now!! " hahah
Geeze, I guess I got an Atari for Christmas when I was seven. A few years later I played the SSI AD&D games Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds on an Apple IIc, along with Bard's tale (don't remember which one) and Might & Magic. I remember watching my roommate play with Civ for the PS1 in the late '90s but although I thought it was cool I kind of forgot about it. Then a couple years ago I discovered FreeCiv (an open source version of either the first or second Civ, not sure which) and fell in love with it despite the archaic graphics and other flaws. When I finally got a next-gen system (360) CivRev was one of the first three games I bought, and the first to take up extended residence in my disc tray. I apologise if mentioning FreeCiv violates the forum rules but IMHO it offers no competition to the official titles; all it did was make me a fan of the franchise.
I have played many games over the years.
When I was growing up the NES was where it was at for a few years before the SNES hit.
Played the hell out of the Super Mario Bros. series along with many others like Secret of Mana, Madden, Doom, Quake, Half Life, etc.
And I did play a few of the Civs on a computer at my sister's house. But as much as I love playing Civ Rev online my favorite game has and will most likely always be playing MechWarrior 2 online on mplayer. We had leagues setup for our different Clans to compete in. I had several account IDs and was a member of many different clans. I was a pretty elite player in that game. Winning 95% or more of my matches. After mplayer transitioned into gamespy and stopped hosting servers for Mechwarrior 2 I started playing FPS more and more. I was a big counterstrike fan. Unfortunately Console FPS have yet to make one as good as CounterStrike source.
The first game I've played a lot was civ I I think. I wasn't understanding everything I was doing, but I was still beating the AI on the easiest with an early cat rush!
I played a lot of NES games like Faxanadu, mario... I played more of the SNES, ogre battle, secret of mana, mario kart.
On PC there was all civs, master of orion, heroes of might and magic some RPG (baldur's gate, neverwinter night...), lands of lore, total war series, lords of the realm 2 and more and more.
I've wasted lots of time of my life... and still wasting!

I think this post has added some great character dimension to our group... I wasn't sure if it would be ex-D&Ders, PCers, chess players... but it seems to be a wonderful mix from all vantages...

I played D&D but somewhere along the line something happened and now I just can't stand the fantasy genre. It's all about hirsute jerks living in castles and I'm supposed to have some kind of empathy for them because some ugly people are coming to town. Sorry, don't give a crap.
That "something that happened" must have been a real bad experience on the psyche. I did kind of feel when I was playing D&D
(1980s) That people did take it very seriously... I was threaten with real bodily harm at a convention, when I was about to eliminate another charater in a tournament...
I did have fun painting the lead miniatures...
I had a C64 when I was little, but do not recall what I played on there - too long ago :-(
After we switched to a regular PC, I played games like "Theme Park" and "Sim City", Civ1 and Civ2, "Master of Orion" 1 + 2, Command and Conquer, Simon the Sorcerer, etc.
In the early 2000s I played Warcraft 3 for about 3 years straight, was really addicted (like Civ Rev) and was pretty good at it (teams). After that I tried World of Warcraft, but it did not really grow on me.
So I did not really play any game religiously after Warcraft 3 or maybe since 2005. The Civ Rev addiction started when I won an XBox at a convention. I browsed the demo section and found Civ Rev and could not resist to give it a try. I loved Civ 1 and 2 but lost interest in the franchise when they switched to the "Call of Power" series. Played the demo and got hooked immediately and bought it. And here I am three years later. Still playing it like crazy ...
P.S.: To me, the game that is the best game ever made (especially for the time it was released) is "Day of the Tentacle" - smart, tricky, challenging and absolutely hilarious!
Heh, I meant more along the lines of like a switch was flipped off and I didn't like it anymore, not that a nerd threatened to beat me up. That's never happened to me.

back in the days I was quite possibly the best chess player in the country for my age...
and a mean civ I player. Although I only had AI to burtalize
I was also good at connect 4 and a version of that played on a maths book with no gravity.
meanwhile I was a mean tennis ball in squares player too.
Then I got old
I can top that, I actually was junior Welsh chess champion one year.
Then I got a PS3.......
My gaming days began playing Bomberman/Golden Axe and stuff like that on the Sega Megadrive, then PS1, PS2, PS3/X-Box. My first real strategy game was Age of Empires 2 for Playstation 2, and then Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires and Yu-Gi-Oh! games (especially Capsule Monster Coliseum/Duelist of the Roses) to some extent.
I'm not really bogged down by any specific genres, I just play any game I like. Civ Rev was probably my first real strategy game since Age of Empires 2,
I also played quite a bit of D&D in the '80s and early '90s; basically until I took up poker

Then I got a PS3.......
I got shamed out of playing a lot of chess - it just wasnt that cool a thing to do.
