Blocking Civ Bonuses

I have a question regarding civs that receive free techs upon reaching a certain eras. Now as i understand it, (or at least, i thought i did) a civ that gets a free tech this way doesn't get the "first to research" bonus. But i was reading through P2M's head-to-head running record thread and someone mentioned there that they used a scientist to get literacy first. Before Chinese player reached 5 techs. They also mentioned that since they did this the china player wouldn't get the +1 science per city bonus. But, I thought they wouldn't get it anyway. Am i wrong?

Depends on the bonus. I believe any bonus that gives you +1 each turn will be in effect and you do not receive any one time bonus such as Irrigation with Egypt. China does get the Literacy bonus.

china gets the bonus. arabs and india (if their 1st) get the religion culture bonus. it really seems silly they don't allow egypt the irr. bonus. it would make for some fun gamesmanship, them trying to squeeze out extra cities before 5 techs, and others trying to research it before they reach 5.

China normally gets the Literacy bonus if they get there first. If your civ's bonus involves a permanent effect, such as +1 science per city, then you get it. If it is a one-time thing, such as a free building, unit or all cities growing, then you don't get it. We all agree Egypt should get the Irrigation growth because without it, it's a really terrible era bonus, but that's how it works.

Insufficient sample size, since only you and I have even played the French so far. Also, both games were against REM018 and you know there are laws now to keep Germans from invading France all the time.
