The XCOM takes place in 1962 and Music must be late 40's - 1962 or 1963.
Nosmirc: this is good idea: Orchestra cover version of classic 8-bit x-com's themes.

Using period music is so '08. Heard enough of that from Fallout lol...really, they should be using music that crafted to fit the scene, not necessarily the era. Listening to some of the tracks from the Inglourious Basterds soundtrack atm, and some of those are decidedly NOT 40's era music.

So I pfwah on the notion that it HAS to be late 40's to 60's era music.

Ugh...dude, seriously, no. The whole period music thing sorta worked for Fallout because it was a kick back to the ideal world envisioned from that era, which was destroyed by nuclear fire. It just doesn't fit for a game like this. It'd be like having a bard follow you around in Skyrim, singing about your exploits like you're the Brave Sir Robin. Sure, that's how music was back then, but it really doesn't help the game at all.

If I do play this game, I'm gonna have a hard enough time enjoying it, I don't need the Happy Days OST pulling me more out of the game

I agree with Nosmirc. XCOM needs a soundtrack that reminds the music of that time but with a darker tone.Or something like the soundtrack of Jericho ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s87D6SVHFI ). The music of that game gives me creeps!

Says who? Neither of the trailers featured such soundtracks. The music was very B horror movie sort, which, really, is one of the few things that I'm not being too critical on. Maybe a bit too much on the "epicy" side for my tastes, but it's certainly not retro 60's music.

The only time we'd likely to hear such music is if there's a radio in a house somewhere, ie background ambience, not specifically a soundtrack per se.

Heck, I doubt we'd hear such music in the base.

You know what, I'm torn on what I want the music to be. Tarrantino just showed recently how "quirky" music can work in certain settings with Inglorious Basterds, but as many have mentioned before movies aren't 100% translatable to videogames. I get the feeling that music could be falling in to the gap there.

I don't dislike 60's music at all - in fact I am a huge fan of jazz and motown and stuff like that. I just don't know what I would like from it. Quirky could work in the setting of the rest of the game if the game is quirky and b-movieish. However... I don't know if it will be like that. :P

As for the score - I'm not concerned at all. Gary Schyman says on his website that he's scoring the game, so that's one point in it's favor. He writes amazing scores, in my opinion.

    If so, then I'm relieved!

I can almost guarantee that any "retro" music in this game will be used, at most, in the same way it was used for BioShock; atmospheric music coming from radios, jukeboxes, etc. but not actually part of the soundtrack.

Good! So they will have enough space to put those cool musics in the style of X Files/B horror movies!

Yes. I say about it! "Two side" soundtrack - best tactic: if you like licensed tracks - you can have it! If you like orchestra - you can have it too! Bioshock 2 have "Best licensed soundtrack award" and XCOM must be "best" too.

I want metal. But that's just me.

Anyways i'm fine with just about anything. Just don't put anything like this in the game. A hot candidate for the most untalented bands in the history of music.
(yes these guys actually wanted to make a living out of this).
Their sense of rythm must be worse than a caveman beating the crap out of a turtle. XD
And don't get me started on their lyrics.

I think the shooter (and the turn based XCOM:EU) deserve something like the soundtrack of The X-Files.

No. There were lyrics just very badly...pronounced because the vocalist wanted to make a hoarse voice.
But i do think it's in english.

A buddy of mine heard all their "songs" for laughs and it actually gets worse further on when they have to make a (i don't know the english term) bridge between two parts of the "song".

He has an evil side to him so he tried to encourage that band to get on stage.
Imagine how the audience would have reacted to the spectacle
