We need the ☺☺☺☺ing animations for the multiplayer. Without them the game just sucks omg.

If they added animations in multiplayer, your computer would explode.
It was a deliberate design choice Firaxis made to help speed up multiplayer battles for everyone and because (with CiV's engine) there might have been lag/sync issues as well. Besides, I don't really mind not having animations in multiplayer (MY OPINION), I don't want to waste time just for some person to wait for their battle animations to finish, I think people should just play the game and not worry about the visuals. Most people in Civ IV turned them off in multiplayer anyway.
I don't know why guys keep pressuring Firaxis to do this when they don't "need" to and are obviously never going to do it because of CiV's crappy engine.
Animations should just stay in single player where you can waste as much time as you (without wasting other's who don't want to wait for your animations to finish) want, looking at those units fight out a battle when the battle dice was already rolled from the moment the battle started and where you don't have to worry about lag/sync issues because you're just playing the game by yourself.
EDIT: Sorry for my aggressive post, but I just get fed up reading these kind of posts that say stuff like "oh no, no multiplayer unit animations, the game is ruined" when there are bigger multiplayer problems that Firaxis could worry about such as being able to play mods online through LAN or whatever (not like they're going to fix them anytime soon anyway, I haven't seen much from them in ages. I think an expansion DLC which changes the entire game (like the Warlords/Beyond the Sword expansion packs for Civ IV) might fix this).

Considering most people want it as an option enabled by the game's host, this would never actually happen as you'd probably never play a game where they were enabled anyway. Adding more options to a game is never a bad thing and your effectively complaining about something that will not negatively impact you.Originally Posted by Jinzor

Animations and stuff would work if MP was server based rather than peer to peer. I guess they didn't add animations because the peer to peer system wouldn't be able to handle them.

IMHO, multiplayer remains broken and flawed without full support for animations. Argue all you want, rationalize the decision if you must, but please respect the voice of those that see animations as a neccesity to video game playing in the second decade if the 21st century.

But why? Nobody has stated WHY the gameplay is broken without them, how can I respect that view if it's just about visuals? Multiplayer will still suck even with animations, so why not try and fix multiplayer's gameplay/stability first before implementing smaller things such as animations?
Why should I respect the view that they are time consuming or not required? To many they are a neccesity and that should be enough without the unnecessary arguments. Yes stability is important and should NOT be a concern more than a YEAR after release. NONE of this should. Multiplayer should have been fixed by now.
The problem is that animations suck by themselves..I disable them anyway even on SP because the game takes forever. Why on earth would I want these crappy animations added into MP before other more important improvements. Explain that...

They "suck", should have used inverted commas sorry, because they are buggy. I'll give you a couple of examples, Swordsmen that for some reason out of nowhere start running and make incredible noises that annoy the crap out of me, or endless fighting between a last archer and a last warrior which go on and on, or air units that go around units for 1-2 mins apparently trying to bombard them but at the end inflict 1 damage. They are not consistent, they are poorly implemented, they take forever to load and SP turn times become much faster without them (if you go quick combat you can never go back, you have been warned).
Now if you want to fight for better animations I am with you but I'm not going to fight for these animations to be added. I would only reluctantly agree with movement animations but after playing so much MP without them I feel what the hell I can live without movement animations if you give me a better timer, more stability, lower turn times when we add 2-4 AIs in large maps rather than lame buggy battle animations that everyone seems to be asking. Sorry for ranting nothing against you personally. So what do you have to say?
You should go see the problem there was with civ revolution on multiplayer freezes, cheat, lag... Maybe they weren't ready to meet that challenge yet.
There's no point to even add those AIs, since there is no AI diplomacy in MP and the AI acts like a retarded version of the single player AI.
This has improved after a certain patch. Still no active diplomacy but at least on Deity the AIs expand as normal and declare wars even on human players..major issue you can't play the game after turn 100 or something cause of the extreme turn load waiting. I agree that no active diplo is a disgrace though.

Personal reasons then, got it. Personally I like playing graphically engaging games that allow me to see what is happening, whether poorly done or fantastically done. I spent many hours playing MUDs and if I want a no graphic text experience I will play that. Civ is supposedly a graphically engaging game, many advertisements pint out this fact, many reviews report on the style and grave of the graphics. Diplomacy was shown to be a gear engaging feature. Yet, all of this is left out of multiplayer. They were able to put it into the hotseat feature but not the rest of multiplayer. Stability and performance aside, animations should have been a default option and not still a debated and petitioned problem.
i think its more of a strategy game. based on history.

They have had ample time to both fix multiplayer and at least add animations as an option, I could not care less about those who don't want it, I cannot see a valid argument against it other than your just a bunch of impatient children, I would not deny anybody a feature they wanted just because I would not use it.
Leaving out animations by design is a load of BS, more like "run out of time".
You are absolutely right, but in my defence I never said animations should not be added I just said they should not be a priority. That's because even with all the animations on MP would still be unplayable..imagine if they spent all their time adding the animations and then you simply had to turn them off because of lag or other very probable issues. Now is that 2K incompetence? absolutely! but still this is about priorities, fix the lag and turn times issues first, improve MP AI further e.g. diplomacy, fix the timer and then add movement/battle animations as separate options preferably. Oh and some people would like to see turn based MP first..

Exactly, you've summed my feelings up perfectly! That is what I want; fix the main game (gameplay, stability etc) first before any of this minor crap. I'm surprised that there are stronger feelings for mutliplayer animations than the actual game itself, that is just sad and that's what pisses me off.
And here I thought steam was supposed to enhance brand image and development funds by cutting out piracy. *cough* what happened?

If you want to play MP game on new map just use this procedure:
If you want to play MP game with MODs just manually overwrite original game file by this one from mods. Of course on all players PCs. I'm sure that someone will prepare installer for MPMod which will do it for you but now you have to do it manually.Installation: put this map (mapname.lua) into C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\Assets\Maps\
For multiplayer game all players have to upload new map to this folders on own PC.
Warning: do not put it in "My Documents\..." - it will cause problems when other player will have it in correct location and you will try to play together.
You have to restart you CIV after you have copied map script file!
If this works then why doesn't the Terra map show up as an option for multiplayer? The basic downloaded game from amazon has Terra.lua map in that folder and yet I can't play the terra map with a friend.
I would have to agree wholeheartedly with the original post.
I bought this game really looking forward to multi-player; intending to play it with one of my brothers who also was looking forward to it. We started one game and quit soon after realizing there were no animations, and haven't tried again since.
Waiting for people is not a concern with us, as we are very into co-op so are on the same team and can move simultaneously in civ 5.
While there are some who obviously don't care, there are many threads all over the internet showing a great number of players DO.
Without animations the game is lifeless and dull, and IMO broken; it feels like I'm playing Civ 2 again, but even that had transition animations from square to square.
Bottom line: for many - no animations in MP = broken and worthless MP.
Get this fixed please. (not that my suggestion will actually do anything, as 2K have made it perfectly clear they don't give a S$%T)
I did try with the continents_plus.lua map and it didn't work on MP but it did work with a custom made map, think it was yours, I don't get it what's the difference?

In continents_plus.lua there is line mulitplayer=false , you have to change it to =true on all players PCs.

Thanks!! I will test and let you know if I have issues. I wonder why they included the line MP=false?? Seems idiotic even though it might have been to prevent ppl trying to play MP games with different maps and failing. Another sign they didn't bother coding a more comprehensive solution like integrating the maps into the DLC MP check system to avoid any issues. just my two cents.... it's fun to have animations, but it really turns out sucks without allow us to turn it off
