Anyone got any thoughts on Skyrim?
I never played Elder Scrolls before but I've heard only good things about them and I'm a Fallout fan. I was always tempted to buy the Oblivion special edition for PS3 but in the end I always decided it was too old and I'd missed the glory days when it was the best thing around.
I don't game anywhere near the amount I used to (only on weekends now) because I don't have a console with me at Uni, but I might get it when Christmas break comes around.
P.S: Speaking of excavating PS2's, I was thinking about doing that myself.....all I need is a cheap TV.![]()
I played Morrowind. I thought it was really cool for a while and then I realized that my stupid character walked so slowly it took literally hours to get anywhere. That was not so much fun. Also the fact that you'd earn xp by jumping around was pretty silly.
Oblivion was better in a lot of ways. If I were laid up with a broken leg or a billion dollars or something, I might give it another play-through. The expansions weren't as good but the core game was pretty nice. Just making the character walk a little faster, have the ability to ride a horse and use fast travel was huge but there were other improvements as well.
I'll probably give Skyrim a look though honestly the commercials I've seen for it so far don't make it look that good. I'm definitely waiting for some reviews.
I wasn't going to buy an iphone or ipad just to play CivRev on it, but I noticed Civ5 mobile for $6.95 in my app store the other day so I got it. I don't have a very impressive phone. It's a Samsung Rogue, basically Android's little brother. This game runs really well on my phone, much better than Civ5 runs on my laptop. I haven't completed a game yet because my commute is just a 15-20 minute train ride, but I've almost missed my stop twice so it's at least somewhat engrossing. The interface is nice. You pretty much confirm everything because it's so easy to misclick on such a small screen. The game itself is a stripped-down version of Civ5 and I think I might prefer it to its namesake. I don't know if it will be challenging enough to warrant repeated campaigns and of course there's no multiplayer, but I think it's pretty good for what it is.
I got it and don't really like it. Although I think it is a really good game. I know that doesn't make sense but hear me out.
My FAVORITE part of the COD series has always been building up big kill streaks and getting a bunch of kills with a chopper gunner, ac-130, etc. I'm not the best at the game, but I could usually pull it off a few times and night and get some nice 30-1 games. I was holding around a 2.20 k/d in Black Ops which is above average (1 k/d) but nowhere near elite status (4+ k/d).
MW3 makes this near impossible. The maps are very small and promote constant engagement. There are virtually no power positions on the maps that you can hold down and rack up kills. Enemies will spawn 15 feet behind you and shoot you in the back if you attempt to spawn trap. A lot of the battles are fair 1v1 gunfights due to a lot of 90 degree corners and lack of cover than only shows your head (commonly referred to as head glitching). It's hard to win 10 fair gun fights in a row to get the high kill streak rewards. Combine this with kills streaks that require more kills to obtain and are less powerful, and those 30-1 never happen, at least for me.
So I'm not complaining, as I think MW3 would be a great competitive game where gun skill and team communication rule. I'm just not interested in that type of game currently. I did that with the early Halo games and had a blast, but I don't have the time to dedicate to a game right now. I think I'm around a 1.5 to 1.75 k/d in MW3 which is pretty high from what I can tell. A 2 k/d in MW3 seems to be about a 3 k/d in other COD games. Like I said, I just don't find the game as enjoyable as the previous titles.
Looks like more Civ in my future!![]()
yes i noticed that too, you cant be spraying all over the place, once you kill the first guy, you got so damaged that the second guy who comes your way is gonna kill you super fast, its not so much like previous ones were you can go all rambo and someone how survive whie being really damaged.. lol
my kd is like .9... LOL
my favorite part of mw2 was noobtubing.. add in sleight of hand, danger close, a thumper, and last stand just to annoy your competition, and it was just beautiful , you could aim at the wall and he would die..
noob tubing in mw3.. you have to make direct contact, and sometimes not even that will kill the enemyi was so dissapointed lol
im sure treyarch will do a better job![]()
Get MAG. Best FPS out there IMO, at least for the "thinking", strategy-oriented homicidal maniac. Not the best graphics, sure, but all about teamwork, tactics, etc. but with the adrenalin rush and instant gratification of real-time FPS combat. Learning curve for the first 5-10 hrs is a bit steep (you won't have any idea where the hell your squad leaders are telling you to go) but with a mic, a little XP and a group of friends (or up to 128 articulate english speaking like-minded killers) this game is unparalleled.
Good...it is about time they put a stop to that ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ spawn camper crap. That kind of BS ruined the CoD series for me.
CoD is still crap compared to a PC FPS like Counterstrike.
mw3...
YOU CAN HEAR!! the reaction to the enemy you kill !! for a split second !!
yes, if the enemy you just killed has a mic, you can hear him rage at you !!!!!! its hilarious !!
I hate game developers now like halo reach and COD the greedy bastards make maps release the game then in one month sell the "new maps" for 10 dollars even though they had them made before the game was finished. Those f*****n greedy bastards all need to be shot sry this is off topic but it had to be said.
they need to finance mw4 somehow .. they are probably working on it right now..
i think its perfectly acceptable, they make it, so they should decide how we pay.. of course if absolutely NO ONE bought them, they would obviously have to lower the price.. but ppl do buy them..
you probably bought them.. its your fault :P .. luckily for me i ps3 share them :P i dont pay a dime muhahhaaahh
I bought Skyrim finally. I only played for 1 hour last week-end and I won't be able to play until next, but it seems really good. Does anybody else played so far.
I absolutely hate playing RPGs when I have to take large breaks from gaming (I can only play games on weekends now), it's the reason why I never finished Fallout: New Vegas. I'd buy Skyrim in an instant if I could play it regularly.
It seems so good though, I may just buy it anyway.![]()
it seems we have different playing styles..
i dont like skyrim :0 haha
i like cod
i like civ
you like civ
you like skyrim..
we meet only at civ weirdly haha
CoD is the only shooter I really don't like, funnily enough. I like Battlefield/Killzone/Halo.......
You played Uncharted 3?
I've played COD MW2. I've finished the campaign and did some coop special ops with friends and my brother. I've never tried online, maybe I would love it. You could beat me for once. My brother will maybe give me MW3 or Battlefield 3 for my past birthday...
I'm big fan of RPG and I haven't played any for a long while. So Skyrim was a must try for me.
no, i dont like uncharted either, seems wayyyy to boring, played uncharted one for like 10 mins... good thing my dad bought it for him hahah would of been a waste of money
i never played single player for.. world at war, modern warfare 2, black ops, and mw3.. i only did half the single player for cod4 only because i didnt know better :P hahha
I love Left 4 Dead 2. I just wish you could play as infected offline as waiting for a game to load, only to be kicked 10 seconds in is annoying as hell.
My wife bought me Black Ops, so I've been playing the training with bots.
Yeah, so I got Skyrim. I wasn't sure I should get it. I don't care much for fantasy as a genre. I couldn't finish Dragon Age and am bored to tears by Game of Thrones. I did like Oblivion though. Morrowind was okay but without a fast travel option, ugh, no couldn't finish it.
So anyway, it's basically the same thing except for some reason you are the Kwisatz Haderach which is a bundle of nonsense, but it doesn't really matter because it's fun. Fighting dragons in this game is fun. I read that in a review and didn't really believe it. Boss fights against giant monsters in games like these tend to be annoying. Hit it 30 million times, use all your healing potions, hit it another 30 million times, bleah. Somehow they made it fun in Skyrim.
As always, I'd probably rather be playing CivRev so feel free to challenge me if you see me on playing something else.
I got Skyrim for Christmas. It's not the type of game I normally play, and I don't know if I will tire of hacking away at a variety of foes, but the scenery and details remind me of Myst. I expect I will play as long as the 'gee whiz' interest is greater than the hack, hack, hack boredom.
Yeah I got it too. seems OK but I did get a bit frustrated in some situations.
I've played it a bit too... seems like it has a lot of promise. The one thing that worries me is that I'll miss some things that I should be doing and then later on not be able to go any further. If you've extensively played RPGs before maybe you guys don't have to worry about that. To give an example, I realized the other day that I should be collecting things that seem relatively unimportant (like garlic or something) so I can use them later to make or do things---as with smithing and alchemy. Maybe it doesn't matter too much though.
No, those are just minigames you can play if you want. I haven't gotten that far yet but typically you can play these Bethesda games all the way through without ever collecting garlic.
He gets stuck in corners. I find Skyrim frustrating because I don't have an HD TV (well, I do, but that's not the one connected to my xbox) and they don't have an option for a readable font. Yes, I do have telescopic vision so I'm able to mostly read what's on the screen, but stuff gets cut off around the edges.
Alchemy and stuff is totally optional. The only obscure items you'll want to keep are the claws (Not animal/enemy claws or whatever, I mean the artifacts). You'll find out why soon enough, maybe you already have. Unlike most important (quest) items they can be sold, but they'll never leave the merchant's inventory when it refreshes so you can go back for them. I don't like leaving important things with NPCs though since they could glitch or be killed by a dragon or something and you'll never get it back. Also you'll want to keep the Dragon Priest masks, I found some kind of shrine where you can put them and I think something happens when you collect them all.
That's good to know. It was starting to seem like Skyrim would involve a lot of work constantly collecting and organizing things when I already do enough of that in real life!So maybe I won't worry too much about missing a few things here and there.
Since I've never played more than a few hours of an RPG (Fallout and Oblivion), I'll see if I can actually get all the way through this one on a lower difficulty level. If I can and it's fun I'll take up the challenge of trying to accomplish more on another play-through after I have more experience of what's expected.
Thanks guys!
I've learned in the last few years that focusing is important in videogames---as with Civ Rev when you might be tempted to grab all early techs when in fact you shouldn't. I've heard it's similar in RPGs as when you should develop a few skills at high levels as opposed to many at lower levels. But thus far in Skyrim it doesn't seem like you have to make strategic choices that way since every race has about 6 skills it's naturally good at performing. I'm not sure there's a need to narrow those 6 any further, although I could be wrong.
Actually, as with Oblivion before it, it's totally irrelevant. Develop whatever you want. You can set the combat difficulty lower at any time and there's nothing else that would stop you from finishing the main quest. These games are just about playing the kind of game you want to play which is why they're so popular.
It would be nice if there were fast travel from inside of Skyrim dungeons. Each time I kill a certain amount of enemies and amass loot I have to retrace all my steps out of lengthy mazes to return to a shop where I can sell/unload the weapons, clothing, and other stuff. Today I started up a saved game and it must have taken me 20-30 minutes to really begin playing since I had to leave the cave, sell stuff, and then run through the maze again to find where I started. Maybe as stamina increases (I'm an Orc that starts with 100 stamina) this won't be a problem.
But otherwise it's fun. I'm level 5 now which may be the longest I've played any RPG.
Loved RPG's as a kid (Bard's Tale, the D&D games like Curse of the Azure Bonds), as well as Final Fantasy 7 while in college. And KOTOR is still my favorite game on the original XBox.
Will plan on getting either Dark Souls or Srymmm (sp?) once I finally get around to finishing FF XIII.
One thing about the newer RPG's- such as Dragon Age and FFXIII I don't like (and hope this isn't an issue on the games I just mentioned) is that it's hard as hell for me to tell what I'm doing. i.e. How much of a damage increase is the buff I just cast allowing me to do, or is the skill I just used worth the cost, etc. The damage display moves way too fast, and there are no refrence points.
KOTOR (Star War Knights of the Old Republic) was great in that you could look up the "dice" results during and after the battles.
(sorry if I have posted this before...)
Most mazes have like a 'hidden exit' that returns you to somewhere close to the entrance. Look for chains to pull, they'll often reveal a hidden passage. I had the same problem in some places (dwarven ruins especially, their metal weighs a ton), just try not to hoard everything, just pick up things with a good weight/value ratio. Armor and weapons are especially valuable since there are more armor/weapon merchants than any other kind.
My carrying capacity is now over 400 and I'm rolling in gold so I don't really have any problems anymore. I still have a compulsion to continue looting and selling though, even through I don't need to.
Can't they put some kind of release date for Bioshock Infinite, Fall 2012 or something would be nice instead of TBA...
I see talk of this game has waned on the forum... I guess its skyrim I need to get... dumped Rage, Dark Souls and K(C)atherine...
Cash never really becomes a problem, especially when you have some pickpocket skill.
It's really not worth it to loot, especially if it's a pain to you. I can understand people doing it for role playing.
The only thing that I take time to loot was dragon scale\bone to make good armour, but i never had enough skill to make them so it was a waste of time.
