Ironically, I refused to answer elthrashers polite messages and chat requests too... I was stuck in a intense teams match with pointstar and didnt want to screw him over. Shoulda quit really.

nothing ironic about it, i checked my xbox all day long a simple yes or no would have been suitable
sooooooo, morte you wanna dice me up and finish this?
How about we just pretend like it never happened since it was over a year ago that it started. I think you guys should just let it go and call Thrasher the winner![]()
LMFAO Since Mawpawk is so easy going I'm sure he will agree
besides he has to prep for the current champion bracket.
I can play this against whoever whenever they are ready.
cant remember the details 2 well... but morte beat me so gd luck 2 scottie and thrasher
got some games in!!
my england stomps his england (i got the gold and set a trap fior his little horse army then wone some jhost advantage button races)
his russians beat my egyptians - i should have won but i just left a key city wide open and he got 7cog. then i lost some button races on my cap.. arrgghh...
his egypt beats my india - sid screwed me here - I was on a peninsular and he was strorming up from the other end with 2 ha before i had a barb.
had a go at one more game germany vs germany.
we both got an ai cap mine rome his russia - maybe he had another i forget. but i figured he had the advantage although i did have some great island cities up north. then I made a great attack which fliped his ai cap city and killed a few of his WA and brought about 7LA to his doorstep (some with march)... then someone in the house decided to connect the laptop to the internet and down went the game haha oh well...
thrasher figured things were going pretty decent on his side anyway, and of course fault of the discontect was my side!!
and it sounds like taking his cities would have been hard so back to the replay!
anyway - thought it was worth a mention since this was the one i played well in I think.

and the winner is decided and it is elthrasher!!
shame i put up such a bad fight in the last game. i got 7cog but was far away from everyone. he got AW for religion and spain for nav and that had me scared for the whole game. I could have beaten him in this one like in the egyptian one but I just played the wrong strategy. If id got to AW one turn earlier he would have been toast though
i feel thrash is and remains a cut above anyone else I've played, even some good play by me in this tourney and some good starts was not enough to take it So a worthy champion indeed.
well done thrash!
Thanks, Scottie. Those were good games and I'll give them proper write-ups eventually. The last one was really my style.
I just want to point out that while we did finish this tournament ridiculously late and I was AWOL for a long time, Scottie and I have only been eligible to play this final match for a week and we got it done in time!
pyramid germans with nav and acess to all the ai.. yep that is everyone's style.
but its not as if I didnt have my own advantages so Im not complaining
I made a couple of big strategic errors that messed up my game - one was not getting the GB for GW, another was not just teching inv and GSing steam I also could have expanded more - but I was just too paranoid oh and that was all related to me not making full use of the gold i had.
Also stunk that I got no caravan from 250g - that could ahve been worth a couple of hundred gold or somthing... and a few other annoying things, also didnt press arabs and steal religion off them, but yeah.. fundy germans with nav... erkkkkk.. lol
congrats thrasher
Well it was a long time coming, but congratulations thrasher, & Scottie as runner up. Credit to 'pawkster for sticking it out and getting those games in with Morte.
Look at Thrash go! 2010 runner up. 2011 Winner. Congrats!
Game 1: I went with Egypt to keep the big guns in reserve and Scottie chose India. I moved one tile and settled the first turn with three deserts and two trees and got the Hanging Gardens. I had a barb in sight. Scottie moved off a peninsula and walked in on somebody or other (Russia? Zulu? France?). The barb gave me cash so I had a very fast horse army which found Scottie before Scottie could put together any kind of army or counter so I pounded on his one city, draining his resources, then took it after a few turns. The direct approach works in situations like this.
Game 2: I picked Russia and Scottie was Egypt. I started far up in the cold north. Scottie got the Oracle and took an AI cap or two. I eventually had to settle but I didn't have much of anything around me. It took a while, but I eventually found Confucius so I put everything into a galley and took that (GE, GB) and found Seven Cities a bit beyond, though it was a little late because Scottie already had his 100 gold and had taken at least one AI cap and got the Pyramids and I still wasn't near anything. I noticed borders on an island to the south and it turned out to be Spain so I brought a horse army over and lost to an archer 6-4. I brought some more horses and saw an 18 defense archer army with my militia. Well, now I'm really screwed because Scottie was at 6 techs and expanding in Republic while I just had the one tech and had spent my gold. I took the galley south, staying at war with Spain so Scottie would think I was working on that. I landed my armies behind his lines and grabbed a quick city, then moved on to his cap. I guess whatever armies he had were on another part of the map. Thebes fell and Scottie gave up as I would now have the Oracle plus the Pyramids and access to the rest of his cities.
Game 3: We both picked England. We spawned fairly close to one another and each took a cap, but Scottie had more gold and access to more map. I took a run at him and he was more than ready. I might have done something with this game by keeping my powder dry, but I was getting really tired and wanted to go for the quick game.
Game 4: Kind of obvious we'd both be Germany at this point, though I suppose I could have gone with a weaker choice, then played Germany against Scottie's Rome or something if I'd lost this one. Anyway, we had several false starts but finally got the game in. My settlers wandered through desert for a few turns. I definitely went in the right direction this game. I wound up settling between Spain and the Arabs, but not too close to either of them. Scottie was way down a crescent past the Arabs, quite far from me. I had walked for four turns without finding money so it took me a while to get going. Then I got Horseback Riding out of my second barb while Scottie picked up Seven Cities, Ark and Knights Templar. I hadn't found the Arabs yet so I went after Spain with a warrior army (no money for horses). I took them in perhaps 2300 BC and spent all of my gold on a galleon so I could go and grab Angkor Wat. I beat Scottie by a turn to it.
So now it's my Navigation + Pyramids vs. Scottie's unlimited gold and high culture, plus a roving knight somewhere. What happened to that guy? Did he die attacking the Arabs or something? Scottie teched CoL and started expanding while I went into Fundamentalism. We both found the Zulu around the same time but Scottie just had single warriors. I took Zimbabwe with the same army that took Madrid. I stayed in Fundamentalism and put a couple of cities on whales (there weren't that many) and filled the shipping lanes with galleons so Scottie wouldn't have an easy route to attack. I knew he'd kind of turtle and go heavy on defense because it's too tough to defend against galleons if you spread out. My mastery of the seas let me expand without defenses. Despite never leaving Fundamentalism I ended up expanding more than Scottie.
I think it was around 100 AD that I found Scottie's 1 tile island with dye and a library with a galleon that had three legion armies aboard. He had a few units in the city but I took it. This is why libraries aren't good, kiddies! So that took a chunk out of his teching. I landed more armies on different parts of Scottie's turf and took Monarchy off of him. He chased me around some, but I wound up first to knights. All this while I had a couple of good settler pumps and was actually running out of places to put cities. Scottie disconnected for the second time and decided not to continue when he came back. It wasn't just the attack, but the fact that I was narrowing the tech lead by leaps and bounds and would have certainly been first to cruisers and such had the game gone on.
not so sure about that - maybe i should have built more libraries! If i had then I could have beaten you to steam that way and maybe defended with cruisers vs your galleon. the library probably paid for itself in overflow anyway.
better strategy might have been to target a Gb for GW so i could settler out. or just to settler out and just guess yu wouldnt bother to sail all the way to me.
My problem was i didnt know what to do. I knew where you were but I couldnt get there. the galleon caused a problem for me too as the kt was on the island near AW, but i couldnt move it because i had no galley anymore (disbanded to avoid your galleon killing it). I also figured it was useless because i couldnt bring support that far away. I didnt disband it but i might as well have.
I was sitting aroung with 250g or so going.. hmm i have nothing to do with this. I can get units but not enough, i can try to get a galley across to the ai - but he has multiple galleons and can kill it. I can expand out but he can just galleon drop my cities, i can turtle but he has religion, i could attack ai but they were so far away and I'd have to walk 20 odd turns with those galleons out there. I could attack the human but i was aware he was about as far away as possible. maybe 20 turns by galley plus time to build everything and he would probably see me coming.... all i could think was i needed steam to hold the sea.
I wanted a gs from invention and i got a GL.
Yeah, but then I had your library for free. Sure, I never used it because I preferred to stay in Fundamentalism, but had the game gone on (I almost teched Democracy), that city would have been huge for me and the price was definitely right.
I wanted the GW because my navigation makes expansion easier but instead I got a GA which I could never use until the end of the game. I was going to spring it on you as soon as one of your cities became impregnable. Anyway, I'm not sure that's the way for you since I could have used the Pyramid for Republic and I'd still have whales and navigation for better expanding.
So where was your poor knight? I never even saw it. I was afraid he was lurking around on that island with Zimbabwe on it. Anyway, yeah that's the power of Navigation. If you had a decent overland route, you might have had a chance, but even then that lets me attack your flank and I can move a lot faster than you.
The stupid AI spent your GL. Instead of racing for Steam, you could have gotten Navigation yourself, but I still think you're in a tough spot. Your problem was that I could attack you while you were expanding but you couldn't really reach me at all. I had five galleons by the end of the game.
yeah but thats a flawed way of looking at it. it doesnt matter if the library is useful to you if my strategy has failed. what mattered was if it was better than other options. maybe not but i had actually sat on the 80g for a few turns with nothing to do with it at elast this way i was pulling overflow beakers every now and then.
what would you have me spend my money on? I know I have no easy way to get to you. You cant critique a bad strategy unless you know a better oneAnyway, I'm not sure that's the way for you since I could have used the Pyramid for Republic and I'd still have whales and navigation for better expanding.![]()
I know if i was you id have had galleons out and scouts and i wouldnt let me get at.. er me....
knight was on the island. i couldnt get it off for the same reason offense was pretty much out of the question without setting up a better platform. I know you arent hte type to have a civ that can just be blown apart with a couple of legions or somthing. So where was your poor knight? I never even saw it. I was afraid he was lurking around on that island with Zimbabwe on it. Anyway, yeah that's the power of Navigation. If you had a decent overland route, you might have had a chance, but even then that lets me attack your flank and I can move a lot faster than you.
exactly. in fact you could see me coming with good scouts and have ages to prepare even if that involved carrying offensive units back on a boat.
