Not in the slightest. After two E3's of disappointing news, that there's no content of the originals being used, that the gameplay is nothing like the originals, there really isn't much to look forward to. At least not for an X-Com fan. At this point, I'm just seeing how it turns out.
Speak for yourself, Nosmirc. I would have preferred a remake of the originals myself (and as I told Brian Damage elsewhere, something like UFO: Enemy Unknown meets Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six would work).
But I'm not going to write this off as an automatic failure just on that criterion alone. It may not be what I would have liked best, but I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that it'll be a darn sight better than the real betrayal of the fandom - a game so bad, its name isn't mentioned in polite company.
No kidding. Vegas almost made up for it though, if it weren't for the shoddy engine and weak RPG system (poor SPECIAL....such a robust and swank rule system, gutted so...)
Exactly. That's one such potential that's been overlooked. It drives me nuts that such an approach is not being used!Originally Posted by Ranger Six

On the subject of the ARG, eh...I wonder if it's a sort of acceptance that they're not going to convert many X-Com fans (most that I've seen view this game in a negative light), so push harder for the new fans who are more into the ARGs?
I think what has most of the naysayers feeling betrayed isn't so much the change in how the game is played (i.e., from turn-based strategy to first-person tactical shooter), but the fact that XCOM and their beloved X-Com aren't part of the same universe.
Fallout 3, at least, kept continuity with the rest of the series story-wise, even if it did shift from a turn-based RPG to a first-person shooter with RPG elements. Can't say the same about XCOM and X-Com.
Those are the facts. Everything else is pure opinion.
Wasn't my goal to completely derail the topic btw. Was just passively making a "do ya mind?" towards the anti 'old fan' sentiment that was creeping up.
Nosmirc, there are plenty of threads for you to share your opinion in. Please don't take this one off topic, and try to keep this thread focused on the ARG. If you feel there is any negative sentiment to you or other users, please report the post rather than try and deal with it yourself - that's kind of what I'm supposed to be doing around here.
Thanks.
I'm not "anti-old-fan", to be honest (especially considering that I'm no newcomer to the X-Com series myself). I just don't like it when fans of the series who don't like the direction XCOM is going are rude to the ones who do like it.
That being said, I wonder what's going on with this event in Seattle . . . and what the Seattle Agents will be getting out of it!
Psst, Theta... there's a meet up been announced for Seattle at PAX
Liz blogged about it here.
gIt's also sold out and has been for a while, so you really can't![]()
I'm just getting into Citizen Skywatch and hope to get involved in my first ARG since I missed out on Sits.![]()
I hope whatever happens in Seattle will be shared and much enjoyed!

That would be nice if it was shared since some people can't go to PAXit would be a cool thing to see.
I am not surprised to see the links to Bioshock's universe in the ARG. I have always said this game started out being in the Bioshock universe in some manner (hence the original "This is basically bioshock with blobs" trailer), then had the X-Com name slapped on later.
I feel oddly justified with those links being in the ARG and I'm really curious to see if they strengthen them further (to the point where they are actually operating in the same general universe).
Uhh, what? If you're talking about the things I think you are (the oblique references in the NUFOS newsletter), those aren't "links", they're "shout-outs".
A link would be if - for example - you're playing XCOM after its released, and you come across two of your agents talking about "that crazy guy who though he could build a perfect society in an underwater city" and how his experiment "degenerated into chaos and madness, or so I heard". That right there would be a link, because it means that the characters in XCOM know about the events that took place in Rapture.
But the only references to Bioshock that I've seen in anything XCOM-related are more like, say, the appearance of a partial set of MJOLNIR power armor in Duke Nukem Forever: a chuckle-inducing reference for those familiar with another game, but nothing more.
Here's a quick look at what's going on at PAX. http://www.gamespot.com/events/pax20...ml?sid=6331516
Also, Codex has told me that she'll be writing a full "in game" summary of the events when she gets back home on Monday. Stay tuned.

. . . Oh, that's not good.
It was utterly hilarious when he was asked about Xenonauts. Now that was the definition of uncomfortable for you.
I have to admit, their dead guy was a pretty neat idea. This looks like it could be more interesting ARG than actual game right now. Shame none of this ARG stuff will be anywhere near Australia.
You never know, one of the biggest live events in "There's Something in the Sea" Took place in several countries, including Australia. Not to mention, 2K Australia is now part of 2K Marin, and from my understanding, the game is being headed up more by the Australian team than the Marin County team.
Well if they do anything in Sydney I shall be sure to go and let you guys know what is up.
For those interested, I have made an IRC channel.

Here's another Gamespot video, this one shows the Citizen Skywatch booth with our own Liz as the guide. Looks like it was a pretty neat set up and hopefully they'll get some more milage out of it before the game ships in March.

Also, the morse code on the black board says "LISTEN TO THE RADIO" obviously in reference to the radio right below it.
I don't entirely agree with that assessment. We were told not to touch the radio and it didn't play anything. HOWEVER, in the doctor's office there was a radio on the table that he turned on and off, which played static and he seemed to listen to it intently...
The chalkboard in general was very interesting. A large portion of it concerned the radio and the belief that "they" were communicating via radio signals that they'd tried and couldn't figure out. The number 3 showed up a lot as well, as if someone had tried to figure out the hertz.
Hi everyone, welcome to forum!
Those recruitment documents from PAX all look really cool! Great artwork.
Everyone, check out CitizenSkywatch.com! I seriously can't wait! Oh please be in Utah, please be in Utah, please be in Utah.
I doubt he'll be in Minnesota 'cause I mean... We are Minnesota so...
Maybe they will come to the Mid-West that would make my daymaybe Missouri lol.
LOL. These ARG's don't generate any profits. They are pure fan gravy.
If anything, smaller cities would be cheaper for them. Splicers Unite events involved taking fans out to a bar for free drinks and eats while passing out t-shirts and contest swag (masks and such). The less people that showed up, the smaller the bar tab.
The other ARG events tended to involve very small groups selected at random, like when a handful of participants met with a shadowy figure and were given real-life audio diary recorders from BioShock.
And when the Speedy Brothers delivery man showed up at my door to deliver a box of swag, that was one-on-one. It doesn't get more expensive than that!![]()
