Losing military units when leaving a civ...

This is primarily a question, but possibly also a complaint/suggestion, depending upon the answer. When one leaves a civilization, if you no longer have the proper techs for the military units that you have, do you lose them permanently, or is it possible to get them back if you rejoin the civ?

The reason I ask is because my game bugged out and dropped me (the king) from my civilization. I had thousands of production worth of military units, and lost all of them. If it is indeed the case that you can't get them back by rejoining, then I think that this needs to be addressed.
