That's hilarious. Who knew that all the AI needed was just to RTFM? 40 something % to 79% is a pretty huge improvement.

Their AI played FreeCiv, the open source clone of Civ2. It played 1v1 on a small map (rushing = win). It took a minute for the AI to compute its turn in the early game.

These facts make it much less exciting ...

The minute is only for the optimization run. At each turn they were running 500 Monte Carlo possible game continuations 20 turns deep and evaluating the outcome of a decision. On some serious hardware.
