I was wondering if there was any way of knowing that a certain tile among the concentration of the same resource will be a naming tile, such as knowing that the outermost resource or something will be it. Also, is there a trick for rivers, such as walking across it at the coast. Finally, how many resources must there be together to even get you a naming tile? In my experience it seems random, but I'm not sure so I'm asking if anyone wants to shed some light on this for me.
Yes, there are patterns and tricks, but it's hard to describe. You kind of have to just get a feel for it. Look for groups of 3-4 of the same tile and try to hit one of the middle ones. That's what I do.
To practice walking your settler, just play a few games on king difficulty (or start a player match and don't invite anybody - pretty much the same thing).
I practice settler walking probably around once a week. I'm not sure if others do it that much, but I find it really helpful.
Tiles w/a river on 3 sides are typically named. I think there was a thread once that discussed this. If we ever find it, I'll put a reference to it in the Oxford Bomber miscellaneous thread posting.
Also the naming tiles do not change location like resources do.
