    Steam Thread

Want to arrange Steam get-togethers? Need a place to discuss all the games you bought off of Steam? Do you just want a place to rage about various Steam-related topics? This is the place!

I guess I'll get this started... I'm going to tweak my computer a little more in a second to make my computer run even better (if I can). I'm still not ready to play online, but I will be before long.

Can someone recommend me a fairly cheap, fun game to get on Steam? I can't even add friends until I buy a game, and the F2P games don't appeal to me.

EDIT: Hydrophobia looks fun. Worth it?

What do you mean by "cheap"? Like, $20? For twenty, you could get Left 4 Dead (one and two).

I don't really know your gaming palate so it's pretty hard to just recommend games right off the bat. But I'll give it a shot anyway.

If you're up for action RPG's, Chantelise is out for 9 bux. A good old game that just went on sale recently is Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. The weekend deal made that go down to 5 bux. Star Wars: KOTOR can be had for 10 bux as well.

If you're into MP Coop games, there's Terraria (10 bux), Dead Horde (9 bux), Magicka (10 bux), Garry's Mod (10 bux), Sanctum (15 bux), Killing Floor (20 bux), etc.

Audiosurf's a very chill game as well.

Meh, I'm just all over the place here. You need to narrow down your game preferences and exactly how much money you're willing to spend.

After watching a few runthroughs of a game called "Sven Co-op: Afraid of Monsters Directors Cut," I decided to download it and try to play it.

I can't get through the opening cutscene without wussing out, even though I know exactly how the game is played. It's a pretty amazing use of the HL1 SDK though. The game is really neatly made.

In that same price range: Capsized. It's 2D but a heck of a lot of fun! If you ever played Super Metroid 3, it's that only modern! I bought it a while back now..

Tech specs for your computer? That's a common problem for lower-functioning computers.

Also, I'm looking into Hydrophobia and maybe the older Max Payne games. Looks fun.

I might pre-order From Dust to get a Nomad Mask on TF2. And because the game itself looks bloody awesome.

Also, my computer also crashes alot when I play TF2. Any way to fix it FallenVamphyre? Besides getting a new computer or buying anything?

Doubt it, it's probably a hardware issue or out-of-date drivers.

Am I the only one around here with a manly enough computer to have never had issues with Steam?

Nope. Well, does Call of Duty count? Or are we just talking about Steam itself? Steam's never given me trouble, but I downloaded CoD: World at War to play Zombies, and my computer can't handle it. The graphics are hideous and the framerate is bad. It's like playing in slow-mo.

Anyway, does anyone know what Steam's policy is on multiple computers? I need to know for whenever I get my new PC together. I can hardly wait for it... it should run BF3 fine.

If it detects that you're logging in from another computer, it'll send you an e-mail activation code, and then you'll be able to play on that computer.

Oooh yes, a friend lent me a copy. Good stuff.

I'm broke at the moment but I think I'm going to get hydrophobia since it reminds me of Beyond Good and Evil (one of my favorite childhood games).

    Man, Steam is awesome.

Steam is not awesome, steam is a marketing and data mining tool that holds all the games you "purchase" hostage, designed to give game publishers some false sense of security regarding their games. You play off their servers, and you dont own anything on Steam. They can disable the games on the account you have at any time, and you can´t trade/resell games. If digital downloads is what you want, there´s much better options like gog, gamersgate and such. Don´t make the fat dude Newell richer than he is. There´s the different new appstores too. On mac, several 2k games like duke nukem, mafia 2 and civ v are now on the mac appstore, without steam. If you have a mac give those a go. I would even say, that the appstores make Steam´s closed, sealed off, model look old. BTW, im only posting here because this is the thread a moderator mentioned after closing another thread regarding steam.

Well, that's your opinion. I like it because it's easy to get my games from one PC to another and they have some pretty good sales on there. Just the other day I bought GTA IV for just $5, no tax. Don't know how they pulled off the tax thing, but I'm not complaining.

Yes, they can disable your games, but it's not like they'll disable them just because you said bad things about Valve. You have to be a hacker or a pirate giving free games to your friends to tick them off bad enough to kill your account. I've got Steam on 3 computers now and I have been playing games on it for quite some time, and I have no complaints. Who cares if it's a marketing tool? Valve is free to sell games however they want.

If you have such a bad problem with Steam, then show your discontent in the only way that works: don't use it.

There is one absolute requirement for having a good Steam experience: you need a fast and reliable Internet connection. If you don't have that then avoid Steam and games that depend on it (Steamworks games). Other than that you need a decent computer - if your computer is old and cranky then there is nothing magical Steam can do to fix that. Given a modern computer in good shape, Steam is an excellent place to get good deals. Sure you can't resell/give away your games but when you got a $60 game on sale for $20 who cares? You've saved more than buy + resell would have netted you with a traditional brick-and-mortar seller plus you get to keep the game. During the Autumn sale that went on just recently I got $200 worth of games for $100. 50% off never happens at a physical store. People say "what if Valve goes out of business?!" Really, that is so unlikely to happen. Steam is a juggernaut and it has decades of life safely left in it yet.

the only negative for me is once bought you're stuck with it, other than that steam is an excellent service, if someone is stupid enough to break the T&C's you agree to and lose their games that's their own fault, the steam closing argument is just ridiculous.

the rest of the tin hat brigade stuff is just nonsense imo, if I were that paranoid about "data harvesting" I wouldn't have an internet connection, or a job, bank account, a car etc etc, you have to give organizations/companies all sorts of information just to exist, Steam would be the least of my worries

I dont like that Steam is compulsory, whether you like it or not you have to install it. If it was an option, to those that like to submit to Valve, and rely on them on everything related to their games, great, but not to me. Regional lock-ins are too a big problem. Also, Valve scams and swindles people in Europe with that whole 1$=1€ rippoff, which is just that, a rippoff. One dollar is NOT one euro. There´s a record 1000+ page thread on Steam boards about it, and Valve is just silent. Lots of people in Europe often claim that they cannot buy DLC to the games they bought on Steam because Steam tells them its not available on their region. When they mention that to publishers, they tell them that it´s due to Steam. Valve again is just silent. And, Valve doesnt give out numbers of their sales.

They´re not accountable about the figures they claim. You have to believe their word. They just happily spread their Steamworks advertisements disguised as game newstories, and every gaming page repeats it like idiot drones, like that Skyrim breaking record sales ad. That "story" should have had "Paid advertisement" next to its title. I like that theyre getting some competition from the likes of the mac appstore, and soon the windows appstore. On the mac it´s obvious how much of an artificial imposition Steam is on a game. You can buy games that were before Steamworks tied like Mafia 2, Civ V, DNF and such on the mac appstore, with Steamworks completely ripped out. You can buy all the Civ V DLCs from the game itself, no steam needed there. You can play online with others, again no steam needed there either. Im glad the fat dude is getting competition at last.

Went to get a new game

and most of the games are STEAM ,What I dislike About STEAM !

You buy a game for say around $ 70.00 to $117.00 and then you have to download the game using around 5 or so GB , With a extra cost of $35 for 5 GB and if you do not have a super FAST broadband , it maybe 10 or so hours before you can play the game ,What if your PC has a crash then you may have to download the game again and if you got 10 games , what is the cost to reinstall them "well a big bucks. "
    Steam
1, the Cost to download a game
2,Only get 3 reinstall for each game ( last time I check it was only 3 but who would want the extra cost)
3, Games can not be sold on , after you clock it what do you do with it , you end up with a lot of old games that you do not need !
    DVD games
1, NO download cost just maybe a patch or two
2, Reinstall anytime you want with no cost !
3,You can sell it on , get some of your money back , that you can put towards the next game.

I like the good old days ! back when you could buy a game put it on the PC , play it , pass it on and today’s games suck !
One game I got was over $100. Then had to download it and clock in two day , ( I don’t play online ) only the single player mode .

I have been using PC for gaming for about 10 years, is this the end ! , PC game’s are no longer for me !.
Can anyone tell me if Xbox 360 is going the Steam way as I'm looking for the next 10 years with out Steam.

You could try the big, red "POST NEW THREAD" button.

You buy a game for say around $ 70.00 to $117.00 and then you have to download the game using around 5 or so GB , With a extra cost of $35 for 5 GB [...]
For one, your ISP is crap.

For two, that's not Steam's problem. If you order something via the mail, do you expect them to pay the postage ...? Or do you accept the whole idea of "shipping and handling" charges?

[...] and if you do not have a super FAST broadband , it maybe 10 or so hours before you can play the game ,
And what exactly do you expect Steam to do about this? You chose your ISP, and the speed of service they provide.

What if your PC has a crash then you may have to download the game again and if you got 10 games , what is the cost to reinstall them "well a big bucks. "
Nah, if my computer crashed - or if I bought a new computer, which I plan to do in 3 years - it would cost me ..... nothing. Zero, zilch, nada, nihil, no dollars and no cents.

2,Only get 3 reinstall for each game ( last time I check it was only 3 but who would want the extra cost)
Patently false. I've uninstalled, and re-installed, several of my own games more than three times.

3, Games can not be sold on , after you clock it what do you do with it , you end up with a lot of old games that you do not need !
Not unique to Steam, nor to digital distribution. Any game with an "online activation", via CD key, would generally be the same: the key is not supposed to be transferrable.

    DVD games
1, NO download cost just maybe a patch or two
.... Shipping and Handling, if you order it through the post.

2, Reinstall anytime you want with no cost !
... except having to store and maintain the disk itself. And any unlock codes / CD-keys required.

3,You can sell it on , get some of your money back , that you can put towards the next game.
    Sometimes, but not always.

One game I got was over $100.
Not U.S. dollars, no. Nothing costs that much.

I have been using PC for gaming for about 10 years, is this the end ! , PC game’s are no longer for me !.
Digital distributionis the future. Adapt, or go without. PERMANENTLY without.

Can anyone tell me if Xbox 360 is going the Steam way as I'm looking for the next 10 years with out Steam.
The LIVE Marketplace works pretty much like Steam. Except they obfuscate their prices behind their own, in-house and nonrefundable currency. Plus, without going online, purchases are forever locked to ONE MACHINE. If it breaks, outside of warranty? Tough luck for you.

As I said: that is not Steam's fault, nor is it their problem. Agitate for better ISP service in your area.

Oh, and on the topic of digitial distribution being the future: don't get me wrong, I do still miss the days when I could walk into a specialty shop - EB, Gamestop, etc - and actually look over several shelves of physical-media computer games. I miss those days dearly.

But they're not coming back. No matter how much you or I would love for it to happen, it won't.
