Thread: Square Textures?

    Square Textures?

When I play the game I get a lot of square shapes in my textures, you can see this in the mountain, a little in the snow and the coast.
I'm running this is Full Detail. You may have noticed the 1600x900 resolution.
    Specs.
    Asus G73jh-a1 - Laptop Model
    Windows 7 64-bit - OS
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 - Graphics
    Intel Core i7 1.5GHz - 1st Generation - CPU
Realtek HD and EAX Advanced HD 4.0 - Audio

You can see the coastal glitch that happens all over the map in this one, I'm not asking about the square it was just a rendering glitch.

Have you tried adjusting your detail levels? Maybe at the limits of what your card can do maybe need to tone down a bit.

My graphics card is well beyond the recommended, and runs the game fine in the highest settings, however I have lowered some settings and the AA and it had no effect.

I had an issue with Steam so I did a re-install and the problem persisted.

Not sure anyone can really help with this. I do get square boxes due to incomplete rendering on more complex maps (could be black or brown squares.) For me the squares do tend to go away once the system catches up. I am running dx11, dual 460 gtx's SLI at max settings and 1920 x 1200 on a way more powerful system than yours. I'm seeing much less of this now with vsync and anti-aliasing turned off, suggesting its simply a resource issue.

I'd think its simply that you are at the limits for your laptop so you need to turn down settings. Also see if you get the same issue on a dx9 game.

I'll check to see what happens in DX9, I've turned all the graphics options down and the problem persisted, so resources are likely not the issue here.

Switching to DX9 mostly fixed the issue, a few problems here and there, however, the quality of DX9 is so much lower, I'd like to see if anyone still knows of anyways to fix the issue on DX11.

DX11 is more complex so needs more resoruces/higher capability. Its not just about having a dx10/11 capable card, its needs to be dx11 capable and able to run Civ V. If you can't run a smaller map DX11 game with everything set to minimum, then no magic bullet, its simply a platform issue for you. If you can run dx11 small map with no issues, then experiment with settings until its no longer acceptable for your play. Turning off antialising and vsync can help.

Perhaps being a laptop the graphics core is getting too hot resulting in bad texture rendering? Might try making sure there is plenty of ventilation around the laptop, including putting it up on legs to get airflow under it.

I can run a DX11 on a large map in full detail with no problems, and for the heating issue, a this laptop would get very hot on account of it's hardware, however, it has multiple large cooling fans in the back so the avg internal temp is usually around 70 C, so temp is not a problem. I have disabled AA and Vsync and there was no change in the issue.

I doubt it's related to resources, the game uses only about %50 of my CPU and %40 of my RAM.

So what size map are you having this rendering problem with then?

Don't forget resopurces also means your GPU with its own built oprocessor and ram... Civ V is very GPU intensive and can stress the card big time. When the GPU runs out of ram, some systems use system ram for the GPU which can then cause issues. As for temps, need to look at case temp and CPU temp but also GPU temp separately. the GPU cna overheat on Civ V quickely wihout the case temp spiking. Laptops can be very prone to this.

I'm having the issue on all size maps, and as for temp, that could be an issue then, however, the extremely large fans on this laptop seem to be able to keep it cool enough, I'll attempt to find the temp of my GPU.

You might try Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php. It detects the temperature sensors in many systems and reports the temperatures. Can log data or graph it to see how it changes during play
