    New Player Help

I was great at Civ 4, and I wanted to try out Civ Rev before I buy Civ 5, but for some reason, I cannot do well at Civ Rev. I've read most of the threads about tips and hints and strategies, but I still have major problems. I'm a huge history buff, and I love the Roman empire, so could I get some tips on using the civ. Also, tips on using the Arabs would be nice. Thanks.

Check the strategy forum. There are strategies for pretty much every Civ w/ multiple strategies and they are fairly detailed.

The strat guides are a good place, though I'll list a few things that may not be readily listed in there.

    - With the Arabs, you'll most likely want to use Fundamentalism to attack your opponent and/or the AI.

    - I've never played the other civs, but from what I have heard, overexpansion causes problems in those games. Not in Civ Rev. If you are struggling against the AI, try to get 10 cities or so, and then the AI should not be an issue.

    - To expand early:
For a 3-pop city prior to having a Republic, you can work 2 trees and 1 grassland for 5 turns. That will produce a settler, and bring your city immediately back to 2-pop. If you have lots of gold, work 1 tree and 2 grassland for 2 turns, then rush with gold to do the same thing (you are storing 10 food, which is needed to grow from 1 pop to 2 pop)

With Rome, you can expand from the 2-pop cities thanks to starting with Republic. If you have gold, work 2 grasslands for 2 turns, then rush the settler. If you are lacking gold, 4 turns on 1 tree and 1 grass, then switch to 2 trees will work.

Rome works best if you can expand early.

What specific issues are you having?

I'm going to, for now, assume you are playing the game in single player mode (though, much the same applies in multiplayer).

Anyways, I think your problem is not enough cities.

How much tech are you producing per turn (when you go all-tech), and how many cities do you typically have?

Also, are you aware on how backfilling techs works in Civ Rev?

Forgot to add, make sure you are manually setting your workers. Allowing the computer to do it for you usually does not give optimal results.

Just to narrow Legatus's question a bit: How many cities you have settled by 0 BC? A reasonable target is 10. Less than that & you probably need to work on expansion tactics first.

I usually have about 6 cities and about 4 of them are on full-tech. the others are full hammer and full gold.

OK. I'll assume those tech cities are either 2 or 3 pop cities for now.

That would mean somewhere between 8 to 12 pop working on science (presumably the sea). That would likely mean 16 to 24 beakers per turn. Early on that's good, but as P2M said, you probably need more than that.

Also, learn the tech tree, and try to pick a specific path. Don't try to get all the little techs; that will hurt you in the long run. You'll eventually backfill what you don't pick. If not, you're probably crushing your foe.

Specifically with Rome, that's what you really want to do, otherwise, you are not playing to their strengths.

I don't know if you have seen the Oxofrd Bombers guide, but the pre-democracy tech recomended goal is 75 beakers per turn, so that may give you an idea as to what you need post-expansion. Of course, you do have to factor in what your opponents, whether it's the AI or human are doing.

Build 10 to 12 cities and see how you go with that, then once you're used to that, build more cities.

One thing to keep in mind is that expansion is much easier if you take 1+ enemy caps (usually AI). So taking enemy caps w/a horsearmy is typically how 90% of all H2H games go down. So that gives you your cap, your 100 gold city, & an enemy cap to expand from. I'd expect to have all those by 2500 BC on average in H2H. So you should have 6 cities by 2000-1500 BC range. Go get CoL (sometimes Irrigation is good to get). Then expand again to 10-12 cities. W/Romans you don't have to tech up to CoL so you can get cities very quickly. Anyhow, a video tutorial specifically targeting early aggression & expansion with Rome might be best.

Morte is a master w/Rome. He used to post videos so he might have one but he'll have to comment. His new Roman strategy in the archive is quite good. I recommend following it pretty rote until it becomes more natural.

    best regards,
