Downfall
December the First, 2698 A.D.
Chaos. An explosion rocks the ground next to me, throwing a man in the air. I look in the direction of the explosion, and see a huge monster, easily 20 feet tall. It is encased in a hard shell, which small, explosive projectiles erupt from. I raise my assault rifle, and hold the trigger down. Bullets ping off the shell, doing nothing. I throw a frag grenade, and run.
I jump in a crater, next to another soldier. I look at him, and realize that he’s dead. Some bugs crawl in, their multiple legs prowling the walls. I shoot one, killing it in a shower of green blood. The other two hear, and rush in my general direction, feelers outstretched. I shoot one quickly where eyes might be located, and down it. The other I rush toward, and shove the butt of my gun into it’s face, beating it down. Jumping out, I run towards the Evac-copter. Civilians are rushing aboard, away from the burning city that was once their home.
This is, or was, New York. The aliens have been on Earth for about 2 weeks now, and have already managed to ravage most of Earth’s major cities, and kill thousands. I fire a short burst into a crowd of creatures with tentacles coming out of their gaping mouths. One of their tentacles grabs another soldier, and pulls him close to the monster. The monster explodes.
The civilians are all on this ‘copter, so I leap on, firing as I do so. The helicopter starts up, and flies away quickly, away from the carnage.
Once we are back at the hastily set-up HQ near Cincinnati, Ohio, I jump down, running towards the doors. My friend Jonathan runs out to greet me.
“Hey, Johnny,” I say.
“Hi Matt, anything new?”
“Same old ☺☺☺☺.”
“Ah.” He says, walking away. I jog inside, and into the armory. Once my gun is put away, I get to my sleeping quarters, and lie down for a rest.

When I get up, I hear the sound of boots thundering past. It’s not my squad, though. I get dressed up in camo pants, shirt, and everything else. Walking through the hall, I see more squads running past. There must be an attack going on somewhere. I push open the cold, steel doors of the mess hall, and sit down for a meal.
I fork a piece of egg, and shove it into my mouth chewing slowly. Tastes like ☺☺☺☺. I get up, and hastily throw my meal in the trash. There’s nothing to do in this ☺☺☺☺hole. I jog through the halls, back to my sleeping quarters. There is no one there. Damn. My squad must’ve gone somewhere without me.
I walk up to a friend of mine, and ask: “Hey Jeff, ya’ know where my squad is?”
“No ☺☺☺☺in’ idea. I tell ya’ what though, these bastards are gonna get you killed. It’d be better to just stay here.”
I wish I could, Jeff. I wish I could.”
Finally, I figure I might as well go out to the airfield and see if I can find them. They could be boarding a plane.
Sure enough, they’re there. I run towards them, and one sees me. “Where the hell have you been?” I don’t respond. I get up on the chopper, and grab a gun off the rack.
“So, where are we headed?” I ask.
“Well, we and a few other squads are goin’ overseas to Europe. I believe France. Turns out, we’ve been getting a ☺☺☺☺ ton of distress calls, and we’re just now answering. The French military is getting the crap beaten out of ‘em.”
The chopper lifts off the ground, and heads east. It’ll be a long ride

Short, non descriptive otherwise good.

Numerous hours later, the chopper touches down in an airfield swarming with soldiers, running around like ants. I jump out as the wind from the chopper whips my long, dark hair into my face. I turn towards my fellow soldiers and ask: "Where to?"
"Paris. The city of love! Ha! Love my ass."
Turning away, I smile. I like this guy. When the squad is ready, we board a few jeeps. A tank comes along. "So," the commander says in a commanding voice. "We are headed to the north-east section of Paris, where we'll rendezvous with the French military. Then we'll make our way to the center of the city, where we'll secure the French HQ there. That understood?" We all nod. "It's pretty FUBAR out there. Watch yourselves."
The cars skid out of the airfield, making their way along the countryside. A tall, huge monster of a man mounts a machine gun turret, and looks out for aliens. Three erupt from the ground, spraying dirt. They sprout thin, leathery wings, and fly closer. High pitched screeches are emitted from their circular mouths, which bristle with rows of needle-like teeth. The machine gun rips through two, and the other disappears back underground.
"Never seen those ones before," I say.
"I'm sure we've just seen a fraction of what those bastards can do."
Nothing else happens in the duration of the ride. Just scared apprehension. Some of us will not be coming back.
We screech to a stop near a river. Across it, we can see a group of soldiers firing at a disgusting creature. It has eight, huge, glassy eyes, and and insanely long arms, which are supporting it. It's back bristles with spines, and it's slimy stomach is pale and luminous. It opens it's mouth to reveal vampire-like teeth, and a long tongue. One of its four legs, which end in a razor sharp point, impales a soldier. As he dies, he throws a grenade into its mouth. Boom.
I look to a dock, and see a boat which we could use to cross the river. "Look, over there," I say, pointing.
We board the boat, and set off towards the rendezvous point.
