Demo first thoughts (literally...)
I literally only just got into the demo and I wanted to say one thing:
Very classy move putting 3D Realms and Tryptich on the dice. It was very well done and made me quite pleased.
I'm off to go hit the start button now, I'll be back later with more. What do you guys think?

I agree first thing you see is the 3D Realms Logo.. nice. My thoughts... Super fun, just how I remember Duke.. A lot of interaction and humor.. I spent 20 minutes just doing stuff in the locker room and drawing on the whiteboard lol..

I thought that whole long intro video was fantastic.
LOL one of the loading screen messages that appeared: "If you get stuck, don't forget you can cheat by looking at FAQs online"
I thought the demo was good. It had a bit of an unpolished feel in my opinion. Just in terms of the polish of interacting with the world. It felt like there were some weird constraints from time to time with POV and stuff like that. It didn't have the smoothness and fluidity and natural feel of a really polished game. It's hard to explain. Also, you can tell that it reflects the sensibilities of the time span it was developed in. Despite the sheen, it didn't feel like a 2011 shooter.
But it's really too little gameplay to have a lot of opinion about I think. I'm curious if people are going to play it and say that it feels dated.
The graphics are pretty good but are less impressive perhaps because of level design and geometry that isn't up to today's standards.
Some of the interactivity, gameplay features and user interface stuff is fantastic though.
I think it's going to be a fun game, and I hope it does well. I think that the Multiplayer will really make or break it. I think a lot of people are going to have mixed feelings about it.

it does feel dated, a bit Duke meets Serious Sam
but it's what I expected and it made me smile & made me laugh, agree there's really not enough there to form much of an opinion of, didn't want the demo to end so job done, will be keeping my order.

Did anyone else get a bit of a "Borderlands" vibe from it?
-
not really, when the first alien appeared I Instantly thought SS, that's what the section before the mine reminds me of more than anything.
-
Hmmm, just the way there's like a container of ammo and how it opens up, and the way that you drop and pickup weapons... and the crosshair and firing... that kind of basic object interaction and setup, and the icons telling me when I was crouching or standing up, and the crosshair and firing... well, it all felt familiar to me with Gearbox sensibilities because I played Borderlands.

so did I, a lot
not what I got from it though, but I see what you mean.

I tried the PC demo this morning and loved it. It was everything I was expecting it to be - a full 3D engine with classic Duke Nukem gameplay - so I was not in the slightest bit disappointed. Sure, it doesn't innovate but I'm fine with that as it was just fun, fun, fun to play and looked visually very good if not exceptional. Loved the variety in the demo, the humour and the little touches. It's like Duke has never been away really as it feels like Duke Nukem 3D as I recall it, if that makes any sense?
If anything the demo left me aching to play the full game but at least now it is only a week away here in the UK. Can't wait.

I didn't get to finish the demo last night - my cold medicine kicked in and knocked me for six at about 11:30pm so I had to give up. However, what i played of the demo was nothing new. It was the two levels from PAX Prime last year.
Now, I'm not complaining, those levels were great. It was nice to see some of the things I missed and mess around with them 9the locker room, need I say more?). I'm going to give it another go later tonight and see if I can finish the whole thing.
Also, the phrase "If you die from falling off of a ledge, it's probably your own fault" came true for me. That's what I get for focusing on what I was shooting at rather than where I was going

(Codex, your spoiler tags failed
)
LOL I didn't experience that, but I thought to myself, boy, I better watch out for that, just in case.
I'll have to play the demo again tonight. It took me about 20 minutes to play through it - I was taking the time to explore everything.
There was something else I wanted to add but now I forgot

Oh balls... I haven't had to put in spoiler tags for a while... thanks Ft, sorry guys T_T
Possibly my most favorite "hint" line in the loading screens has to be the "You can pick up rats." comment. It's just too matter of fact and it made me giggle last night.
