Most threads at some point go off-topic, in most cases unintentionally, so what are you going to lock every single thread? I think locking threads where the discussion remains polite is a mistake and serves no real purpose.

Possibly. If they've wondered off their own topic and wandered all the way off the topic of the board, they could be moved to off-topic. Or split - do the mod tools allow thread splitting?

However, ISTR that we're not supposed to really discuss moderation per se.

Understood, and I would chuckle at anyone who thinks that I am against discussing things that don't exactly match the thread subject.

However, the off-topic discussion in this thread was:

1. Begun on the very first page of the topic
2. Added to a thread that was old enough to qualify as a thread-necro
3. Not just off-topic for the thread, but off-topic for the board
4. Mildly argumentative

Just one or two might not be worth my time, but taken together... In the end, the bigger issue was that the thread was necro'd for no purpose except off-topic discussion. Perhaps I should have been clearer on my note:

Necro'ing a thread is generally discouraged. This thread was brought back to life for reasons not associated to its original topic. The discussion itself is mostly fine, but it should exist in its own thread. The standard response for improperly reanimated threads is that they get shut down. Nothing new here.

If anything, blame me for increasing my presence in anticipation of the upcoming release. Expect closer moderation in the future. Now, as we're really off topic, I'm going to close the thread. If someone really wants to continue discussing the topic, simply PM me and I'll open it back up.
