Instead of having a awol Defence Minister at least let the King or Queen pick that Position
While I agree that having an active defense minister is better than an AWOL one, there have been multiple times where I've logged into the game only to discover that I was queen (I assume by winning a "most productive [x]" contest while I was away). It's equally as possible to have an AWOL king or queen as to have an AWOL defense minister.
Admittedly true. Perhaps a better solution would be to allow the king/queen to also be able to control troops in the battle, in the same way the defense minister does?
I like the idea of the king/queen having secondary powers to do things like the DM's job when the DM is not online. It might be overpowered, but perhaps that should be extended for the king/queen to all the ministry positions, but have it locked when the particular minister is online, and unlocked when they are off.
Or otherwise, have a deputy minister that is selected from only the online people at any moment, who can use the minister's powers when the minister is offline, but otherwise not have that power. The deputy would then be in line to become the minister next. If there is only one person online for a civ, then that person can be deputy for all positions (or maybe just the critical ones for science minister and culture minister).
There are situations where a minister becomes a king even when offline. That could be from having placed GP on wonders while culture minister, and it popped while the minister was offline, or from being science minister while a tech pops and the SM is MVP on a tech even though offline. How about if the offline minister becomes king/queen then a deputy takes the minister position; but if the minister is online when he/she becomes king or queen, then that player retains the minister position (and the deputy does not advance into the minister's position)? I think it's worth trying at least for one game.
Hi, I still think this is a very valid idea. I'm King of my Civ currently, mainly cus of my passion for science and I found a pressure to buy more and more troops and hey presto, now I'm the DM too. This means that if I can't be online for a battle, we're kinda screwed. Would be helpful to be able to reassign the DM post.
because there is no option to choose a position to take? there's also no reason for a DM to be online at all times given there is a huge cooldown before a battle starts which should allow for plenty of time to mobilize troops. a lot of times people get put into a position while they're offline, i know there have been plenty of times when i've been offline and come back to find myself in the king position or as science/defense minister even when i wasn't focused on science/production/troop building.
Of course there is. Don't put so many troops in and let somebody else be the minister.
I'm sorry to say this, but in my opinion that just mean that your civilization is terrible at coordinating things. Moving up randomly because of best farmer contest - that I can understand, there really isn't that much you can do about while offline. Becoming a science / defense minister when it's not desired - that's really something that can be easily avoided.i know there have been plenty of times when i've been offline and come back to find myself in the king position or as science/defense minister even when i wasn't focused on science/production/troop building.
well no. we aren't all fortunate enough to land in civs with all our friends and be able to easily coordinate and manipulate the game in our favor, and sometimes we aren't so lucky to end up in a civilization that doesn't communicate or has members in there that have a hard time communicating. i'm currently in a game where no one has talked in world chat in about a week iirc and i don't think anyone in my nation, which is at max players, has talked yet.
You don't "end up" in a civilization, you know. You're not stuck with whoever you're playing with. You can leave with other players who do communicate and establish a new civilization. Or even one by your own, I most games I was if there are communication problems, it's actually better to be by oneself, because players who don't coordinate what they do only slow you down.Originally Posted by de_stroyed
Why are we discussing this? I though the devs addressed this by allowing the king/queen to control troops. Not exactly what the op suggested, but addressed none-the-less right?
because someone seems to think it is better to lose a battle giving away wonders and technology just to make sure you don't become defense minister.
With Science or culture ministries it's possible to bypass the minster and replace them if they're not online at a critical time. You can't do this with defense, there's no way to leapfrog the minister. I'm all for the king/queen or minister being able to nominate a successor if they know they're not going to be around, or just having defmin given to the highest ranked player currently online
That would be the King/Queen.having defmin given to the highest ranked player currently online
really? king/queen always online? That would be the King/Queen.
Why should the existing king not be online all the time? This is acciomplished by having the person who will be online promoted to king. So... yes, it is possible for the king to be online if an available member 'leapfrogs' into a the king position. This is obviously only possible when your team works together and you know in advance that the DM and king both won't be available. If that's the case then 20 hours is plenty of time to arrange for someone be the king at the right time.
Fair point. Now I just need to find a team where that kind of organisation is even remotely possible![]()

That is, on the other hand, a complicated way to make the defmin obsolete that won't work in the majority of civs. Why not just make the defmin obsolete? You can still arrange with players online to get somebody the science or culture posts but you can't do this with defense. How about a wargames approach where players online from the same civ can fight a quick bloodless battle and the winner gets defmin?
It's okay for Robin to say that if I don't want to be DM don't have so many troops, but we were getting whooped by the other civs. I didn't want that either so turned my production into armies.
I don't see that nomination of DM posts should be out of the reach of this game for the King.
and p.s. yes I do want to be king![]()
So, last night, we entered a batlle with a four to one advantage, The opposition had defensive gladiators. 15 minutes before the battle, our defense minister converted us to defensive stance for a 2 to 1 advantage to reduce losses.
At 5 minutes to go, the other side started logging in, so I suggested to our defense minister that they might switch to heroic at the last minute so we should be prepared to do the same. No response --- it appears his condo was becoming one with the Potomac river.
5 secs prior to the battle, their entire force switched to heroic, As did I. They now had a slight advantage.
These are the things I did
1) Personally chatted with the Minister and King to change everyone's stances
2) Civ chat the individuals to flip their own unit stances
3) Bolstered my own forces as much as possible and waited to fill in gaps.
4) Delayed for as long as possible
5) Contemplated going rogue and declaring on a civiliation I had just watched lose badly
These are the things I did not do
1) Think the game needs repair because the northeast was hit by successive storms
2) Think the game needs repair because the king was content to leave the dying to other folks
3) Think the game needs repair because folks with troops in the fight were willing to just let them die.
4) Think that the game should somehow let me do whatever I wanted, even though I had made no special effort to enable myself to do whatever I wanted, nor shown any skill indicating I desrved such authority.
Post script... My reinforcements caused the opposing nation to go 'All-In'. The defense minister returned from the sandbag patrol just in time to stop the slow loss. The 20 person civilization lost its entire army (heroic gladiator=baaaadddd). The Defense Minister became King and we won two era victories. Followed by a one person civilization winning an era victory for successfully defending against a 20 player civilization with a single horseman.![]()
