To PS3 or not to PS3

    Hello Everyone

Glad to see some old faces still around and glad to see some new faces using the forums.

The question is simple. SHould I just bite the bullet and buy an xbox? Its not about which is the better systems etc, just about fun. Lately Im not getting any fun on ps3. I like player matches but dont get time to play often as life has a way of well getting in the way of civ rev.

My ps3 in on the blink (death throws for non english) so I have a decision to make. Buy a new ps3 or buy an xbox. Looks like Scottie and JackHall have bought xbox's.. Liam have you? HGB are you considering changing codes? sniper? sal?

I am bored to death of killing the AI on diety. I have been trying to see how much gold you can accumilate in a game. Best so far is £23m / £24m!!

Seems more glitchers on xbox but at least there are games. Hope all are well. Look fowards to loosing to you all in the near future if we get on line!!

    Regards

Hey Maniac - long time no speak, How you doin?

A tough choice, no doubt about it. As you say, me 'n Scottie both now have the xbox (but still ps3).

I bought the 'box simply for my love of Civ & it hasn't disappointed. The community is definitely bigger and it's easier to get ranked games. I would recommend, BUT, Civ is the only game I play. We (well, my young son) have about 90 titles on the PS3, so not getting rid of that any time soon.

Not wanting to get into any sort of 'fanboy' debate, but personally, I think the PS3 is a better all round system. Do you have many games? Blu's?

If Civ is your main thing, then go for xbox.

    HTH

Hmmn... The more xbox games I play, the more I'm noticing barb glitching going on, this could be simply that I'm able to get a lot more games in on the xbox, although I'm not sure if it even works on the PS3?

Still, plenty of fair players too.

Personally I like the fact that I don't have to pay for online functions (ok, badly timed for THAT argument, but still...)

But indeed, the Xbox has more stable servers AND more people online... including some of the better of the lesser players

i bought an xbox almost 2 yrs ago because i wasn't getting mt civ jones satisfied on the ps3. i have never regretted it. the pathetic nature of freezers have led them to mostly move on to other games. barb glitching sucks, but it is a handicap i am willing to give to keep my sportsmanship. city collapsers enrage me, but they are few and far between. just don't let them do it to you more than once.

as far as the money goes it is one of my primary hobbies. hobbies cost money. this one is cheap compared to most.

Very good point Dan. I've had my xbox 6 weeks now and counting the cost of the game and hardware has probably already cost me less than a quid* per hours entertainment

I'm still on PS3 and probably always will be. I can't justify spending any more money on another games system to be honest when pretty much all I play is Civ and Tiger woods. As for the most money I've ever got before 2100 I think it was around the 160 million with 750 hammers per turn in my production city after around about 80 future technologies!

yeah but maniak got it in £

PS3 isnt free of cheating - but they do cheat less.
I dont know if it is harder to cheat or not since I dont bother either spending my time cheating, or getting too worked up if someone cheats me.

Since Sony did not make any announcements about ps4 at E3, I take it to mean there will be no release next year. Based on past performance, they will go on full hype / ad mode at least a year or two in advance of release. So 2014 seems the earliest plausible guess.

BTW, if you look at your data more closely, you can see that ps1 -> ps2 was 4 years, then ps2 -> ps3 6 years, so by assuming linear growth pattern 8 years to 2014 would fit perfectly.

What's an appropriate number of titles to own for a console? The whole world wants to know!

Hey as far as the GOTW goes I'm placing in the top 5 on the LBs (PS3).

So, M76 if you're a good player... Buy the box!

I’m typically anti Sony anything, old school and during my entire life Sony has always attempted to gain control of making everything in the market solely proprietary to them. On that same note, while I do use Linux and OpenBSD I’m still partial to Microsoft as my favorite OS for casual use, and with a degree in Web Development (even though I work under my degree in Electronic Engineering and not in web dev) I also prefer IE over any other browser, even wish they still made IE for LINUX. You would think based on all of this I’d be a shoe in for an XBOX, but I’m not. When shopping for my system I didn’t like the cheap feel and disposable short life batteries of the XBOX controllers. I didn’t like the way XBOX Live charges a repeated fee so I went with the PS3. I really got fed up with looking at my finances and seeing them being taken away from me each month a little here and there but adding up to all of it. Those nickels and dimes do add up when you look at all of them and not just individually. As long as Sony doesn’t require me to buy stock in Duracell or charge me a monthly fee I’ll stay with the PS3 happily.

While a new PS4 would be cool, I’m not looking forward to it happening anytime soon. I like the way my PS3, unlike other technologies, has served me well for several years now and still isn’t outdated, or requiring me to scrap everything I have and buy all new all over again.

That's a good point about the PS3, i.e. that it is still not outdated hw. In fact Sony probably overshot the target with it, made it too far ahead of its time when released, making it difficult for the programmers to code for -- too much novelty in the Cell/BE processors. Which is probably the reason why it did not deliver as well as expected and got stuck in the 3rd place of the current gen console sales.

I think price played a big factor in console sales. The majority of people I know who are on the XBOX instead of the PS3 were barely able to afford their XBOX, the additional price of a PS3 for them pushed it out of reach.

One of the additional factors of my deciding to go with PS3 over anything Microsoft, at the time, also had a lot to do with the HD wars of Blu-ray vs. HDDVD. I had just bought an HDDVD player because I believed it was a better format and 2 months later they announce they will no longer be making movies for it. So when I was ready to buy a console at that time it was like do I really want to buy one that supports worthless HDDVD, or the "future proof" Blu-ray? Fast Forward to present day and neither technology would have mattered one way or the other, I no longer use DVD, HDDVD or Blu-ray for movies, I get everything streamed on Vudu.

Being anti Sony is why I bought the HDDVD player mentioned above in the first place. I just saw Blu-ray as yet another attempt by Sony to control their own proprietary format. I guess I should clarify better, it's not so much just Sony, it's that I'm anti all companies who attempt to keep their parts for their products completely proprietary, thus forcing you to only be able to buy the parts to repair, or products to use with, directly from them and at inflated prices. Companies like Sony, HP, Compaq, (pre Intel) Apple, etc... all attempt to force you to only be able to buy their parts.

I play on the 360, and to be honest I frequently wish I'd gone with the PS3 instead, simply because they have a lot of titles that I'd like to play that aren't available on the X Box. Hearing that it's a lot easier to get Civ matches on X Box Live makes me feel a bit better about it though, since that's the only game I really care about playing on-line.
I will say I'm not looking forward to the next-gen at all though. In the last several years it's been about all I could do to keep up with my mortgage, so I wasn't able to upgrade to the current gen until about a year ago. I'm really not in a hurry to shell out several hundred more dollars for a new console, compounded by the need to build my game collection from scratch. Of course, the up side of that is that there are tons of great games that are new to me, even if everyone else played them a few years ago. Why pay top dollar for the shiny new releases when the bargain bin is full of gems like Bioshock (I and II) and DMC 4?

theres a term called "planned obselence" top companies will plan when their products stop working, forcing you to buy them again .. this is also why you might hate top corporations :P

I would say yes. I have the game installed on my main one and run of the disc on the second one, only difference is the noise. Some games now require an install though. You could always add your own HD later for not much money.

You need the xbox one. However you don't need it for CivRev. I just have the old HD with something like a paltry 9GB and have always played CivRev off the original disk. It works fine.

Ok thanks. I'll buy the old civ rev disc from a friend if I get the xbox, but I'm not sure I'll get the Xbox live membership yet. I don't have enough time to play to make it worth I think. I'll have the disc if I get the membership one day.

Last question (or maybe not). IfI install a game on the internal HD, can I transfer it to a non-Xobx HD (just to save space) then install it again from the external HD? Not for playing from the external jsut to store it there while waiting to want to play the game again.

You can get 3 x 1 month free trials with a new xbox (in the UK anyway). When they run out there is usually a decent offer to get you to sign up and extend it. £1 a month I got the last time and was able to stack 3 of those.

I think you can store save games on a USB memory stick

I haven't done anything like that, but it should be possible in theory as you can connect your xbox to a PC. They try to integrate the two, like you can play media files off your computer.

If you're getting an xbox because you like xbox games, then knock yourself out, but if you're just getting it for CivRev, there's not much point in doing it unless you get on xbox live. Trust me, we're worth it. You can join all the tournaments!

Thanks for the input. I know you are all well worth it. For the tournaments I'm pretty sure I would get beaten quite easily as I haven't played seriously in a long time and I think the challenge is smaller on the PS3 side (except for King_Philip the great of course). I would try though...

Has anybody tried Kinect. My gf is interested by it and I thought it could be fun to play with other people.

The kids have it. Although good fun playing Kinect Sports with them (the hurdles are a real laugh) I think I'd struggle to recommend it to an adult. Certainly some fun for a party night, but still just a gimmick IMHO. Maybe that's a little unfair, as i'm not even sure what games are available for it.

Child of Eden is quite unique - about as close as you'll get to tripping without LSD.

Neither of these glitches are possible on PS3, thankfully.
