MOD: Tech - Satellites Reveal Cities

Satellites reveal cities, making them targetable without line of sight.

Satellites (or any tech with the MapVisible option) keeps cities highlighted every turn, making them targetable by bombers, missiles, artillery, etc, even if there is no direct line of sight from a unit.

You can find this mod on the Mod Hub under Game Rules.

Good idea. Civ V "satelites" were under-represented. Could the tech be made to show units also?

It could, but IMHO that would make it over-kill. Cities don't move about, so once you know where they are you just need to give the bomber/missile/artillery computer the lat and long of where you'd like the payload delivered and GPS pretty much does the rest.

I did another mod that gives the AirRecon promotion to Helicopters and Missile Cruisers, so that those units reveal everything in a 6-hex radius at the start of every turn - which turns them into "command and control" units for ground based ops.

I think it would make more sense for this (and maybe the units) to be visible through a project, rather than free with the tech. Having satellites as a tech implies the basic ability to map everything, but you'd actually need a Keyhole network or something to actually see things clearly.

Although the ability to target cities makes sense, because they don't move. Hmm.

Yes, it was the "cities don't start up and drive away, but I still can't target them!" issue that I was trying to solve

Hmmmm. Goes off to read up about Keyhole networks and work out how to create projects

Yeah, any city that's in the revealed area (any city you know about) ought to be targetable. But I thought aircraft gave LOS to everywhere in their range anyway?

Just the Fighter's give a 6-hex default sight radius. Bomber's do not.

If you're taking suggestions... I have a couple of ideas...

Interest on Gold (1% per turn, floored)
    City States cannot raze cities

Version 2 (now on the ModHub) includes the "Keyhole Project" that, once built, expands the revealed area to include the 6 tiles immediately adjacent to cities.

Version 4 now on the Mod Hub - fixes the bug, where after building the keyhole project, if a city is built adjacent to a Natural Wonder, you get two "Discovered Xyz Wonder" per turn.

Version 5 is compatible with the "UI - Project Splash Screens" and includes the Keyhole Project splash screen graphic

Possibly a GPS project could unlock this ability?

GPS is more for mobile units that need to know where they are from a more or less unknown (ie randomly and constantly changing) starting position. If you only need to get from A to B and you know where A is (the silo or airstrip) and you know where B is (because the lat and long of cities tends not to change) a simple inertial guidance system will get you there (and back).

So, is this mod gone or is there a glitch? All of a sudden it's missing from my installed mods, I can't find it, and I can't load the saved game from last night because the mod is gone.

Gone from the Steam Workshop yes - it is just too buggy and poorly implemented/integrated for me to bother wasting my time with it anymore

You can download it from here - http://forums.civfanatics.com/downlo...=file&id=20473

Unzip the file, and you'll have a .civ5mod file. You can use WinRar or 7Zip to unzip that into your "C:\Users\{username}\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Mods" directory
