is there a way to turn off simultaneous turns in a LAN game?
I'ld prefer it if it was possible to make player - player - AI turns.
maybe it already is, but I can't seem to find it.
everything is ok as long as we're playing against AI.
for PvP it is mostly who is fastest, which isn't much fun for either of us.
and we both want to have a good time.
besides, having player - player - AI turns will improve strategy.
which is what it's all about in my opinion.

There's no such option at this time.
There is also no plans to ever implement such a basic option.
They are making Hotseat in the next patch, hotseat requires sequential turns as part of the design, so they might have that option for all MP games, but we are not sure yet. Myself I am fine with simutaneous turns, MP games would take far to long if every human had to take a separate turn, especially in the late game as the turns got longer. No one wants to wait 10min each turn to take their turn. Yes Simu turns can be a bit of a who clicks first has the advantage, but sequential turns are not that much better, if the other player(s) are ahead of you in the sequence they you are always going to sit their watchng them destroy your units and nothing you can do about it, by the time it is your turn the army is half destroyed.....

well that is the whole concept of a turn based game, to make sure that doesn't happen. Remove the turn based nature of the game and you are actually playing a completely different game (closer to warcraft than civilisation). I think they should add this option and hopefully you are right that the hotseat implementation might lead into turn based MP(as an optionOriginally Posted by CanuckSoldier

True but that is not what I personally want, yes simu turns may work against me sometimes, but at least I have the same chance as the other players do. In true turn based mode you are at the mercy of the turn order. Not to mention that turn based MP takes forever to play.
And I actually have played turned based MP back in the Civ2 days before they added simu turns with a patch. And it was like watching paint dry. And though simu turns might seem like an RTS game to some, there are still turns, it is just that everyone takes the turns at the same time, as apposed to true RTS were there are no turns at all.

A successful turn based implementation would require a well constructed timer with as many options as possible so that players can adjust the timer according to their tastes. It would also need to allow the players to check their cities and take certain actions (anything except moving their units perhaps) during the turns of their opponents.
Truth be told the turn based setup might not be suitable for online play against random opponents as it certainly needs a level of respect between opponents to work properly and actually be fun. Definitely I wouldn't recommend it for games with 5 players or more or against random opponents. We did try over here to play simultaneous turns in Civ V but it didn't feel right. Not that I dont like RTS games but it felt as I suppose playing chess with simul turns would feel like. A bit unnatural especially during combat, we decided to wait until turn based MP comes about. So that's the thing, we can't actually play the game at all at the moment as mentally its impossible for us to operate in a simultaneous turns civ environment. For me adding this option should be absolutely one of the top priorities for MP just to able to play the freaking game for once!!
you just make it so that players can do everything else like set goto's manage their research, economy, city management while other players are moving, then when it comes to your turn, you just move your units. Really won't add very much time to the game at all, and might improve stability.
we've been brainstorming a bit on the subject and came with a rather difficult solution.
still, it's the best one we came up with so far.
simultaneous turns are ok as long as you're not at war.
our suggestion is to switch to real turnbased gameplay when a war is declared.
then those players can fight in turn until the war is over.
This has been proposed before in another thread and it is definitely a good idea. Though it would require a similar implementation in terms of programming and perhaps even more as it would have to switch from simul. turns to turn based only for some of the players during a game. 2K has said that the problem with the turn based option is the amount of programming required to implement it so I don't expect them to go for an even more complicated programming option such as a mixture of the two. Hopefully they will "learn" how do it while programming for the Hotseat addition. But then again it is incredible they "forgot" how this can be done as they had successfully done it in a previous version e.g. CIV IV BTS This must be a first in the history of software engineering.
The declaration of war itself then, would fall on a simultaneous turn. Allowing a potential double move opportunity.
Would need some clause where the declarant gets put lower in the resulting turn order.
