What part of the game (besides war) is most fun right now?

This question is meant to help point out, by process of exclusion, what is most lacking in Civ 5 right now. For the sake of interesting results, I took war out as an option in this poll, mostly because people seem to be either happy or at the very least interested in how war works in Civ 5. I'd like to look at other parts of the game to see what's working, and in doing so, perhaps we can get a clue about what isn't working.

Strangely enough, these forums post your thread, and then have you make the poll. Anyway, poll's up.

I went with wonders. After carefully considering all off the other options, only two struck me as fun or interesting. Wonders, and policies. I decided wonders were better with their large variety and interesting effects.

City settlement was also something I considered. But it didn't strike me as something that went above the minimum requirement. This function isn't broken (like most of the other options), but isn't exactly fun and entertaining, either.

    Um... you do?

Are you talking about the diplo system in which everyone will insult you, denounce you, never trust you, and backstab you so much it becomes par for the course? Not even to mention the city-states diplo, which is basically 100% based off of gold. Are we even playing the same game?

    Welcome back, zephyrtr.

I'm having some trouble choosing an option. I don't know... perhaps they're too specific.

If I was asked to give an answer instead of choosing a poll option, I would have to say, "Expanding."

As in, growing my empire larger vertically and horizontally. I like surveying the land, planning my settlements, constructing buildings and terrain improvements to further improve my cities, watching my army mulitply, my cities grow larger, and my borders expand.

I like the idea of starting with a single settler and warrior and turning it into a sprawling empire.

Okay, I guess if I have to be more specific, I'll go with "planning and settling new city locations".

Also, another option that could've been on there is "Building Construction", because I know there's a lot of folks that are builders and like to build everything they can along with the wonders.

EDIT: Oh, there's City Settlement... I'll choose that.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Id say "building construction" is a part of city management. Upwardly expanding a city requires you build its population, tell it what to do... That's all management. I wanted to differentiate between MAKING cities and IMPROVING cities, which are very distinct from each other in the game.

I picked Policies, but I definitely have grown to like the diplomacy system. You definitely have to walk a fine line to prevent everyone from hating you, but that's part of the fun.

Chain denouncements have mostly stopped, I admit that. But it still seems that I am getting denounced constantly in my games. I rarely get fair trades, except SOMETIMES research agreements. And I am still getting insulted periodically.

The whole deception/truth thing is...interesting. In some of my games, it works perfectly. In others, not so much. I mean, in my last game Russia denounced me twice, and then suddenely became friendly. I expected some betrayl, but nothing happened. Turned out to become actually friendly. Maybe I just haven't figured out the nuances.

Either way, it still seems too hard to make friends, and too easy to make enemies.

When the AI heals its units to full, over and over and over again. Invincible armies are so much fun.

For the poll's sake, yes. For the discussion's sake, no. A positively outlooking poll will more likely generate a positive discussion. Also, the 'what needs to be fixed' poll has been done thirteen thousand times. If we can understand what IS working, we might not only isolate what ISN'T working, but why.

You can also see the flow of opinions in the game better. Right now they're trying to fix upward vs outward expansion, but already I'm seeing outward expansion as still being favored.

Diplomacy? Hasn't hit the board yet, though there's some discussion going on. Still seems it would need work, or it would be considered SOMEONE's favorite.

Curiously, a lot of people are picking Policies. This is an event that takes place not that many times throughout the game, and for many players can slow down or stop completely late game.

So policies, exploration and settling, something mostly done early game, are favored, while late game activities like management and diplomacy are not. Sounds like the game's late game features need a serious looking into.

I chose city management. However I look at it, this is still the backbone of your success and progress in the game. Its probably the only factor that truly could make or break your game completely, and I feel many of the other options (namely city settlement, wonder building, and selecting technologies) are almost completely influenced by this alone. As its the most strategically significant factor, I tend to enjoy it the most (in a way its even why I play civ), and there doesn't seem to be anything particularly lacking from the basics of it... maybe it could be further expanded in expansions with the introduction of religions, espionage, or whatever... but overall, maybe my only complaint is the speed of population growth with regards.

Also, if I may comment on the mechanics of the poll, I think simply asking what people enjoy the least, or what they believe to be broken the most in terms of game mechanics, you would get more conclusive results, because right now, what you really know is what the least people find to be the most enjoyable, instead of what the most people find to be the least enjoyable, which is sort of what you're looking for. An example in terms of the bias which this causes is that something like city management, most people don't seem to have it serve as the highlight of their game; however, I'm sure at most very few people would find the mechanic to be broken or completely unenjoyable, meaning that while one poll would make it (detectably inaccurately) seem like its broken, the other could, though I am not saying would, (much more accurately) indicate that there isn't anything wrong with it. I'm not definitely saying that most people don't find it to be broken, just that with the current poll, you wouldn't know for sure.

I guess you said that you did it this way for the discussions sake, and a positive discussion really is much more agreeable in my opinion (and in fact, maybe if it was a negative poll I wouldn't have even clicked on it , because I'm tired of all the negative threads). However, in this case, a multiple choice poll for the question "what parts of the game do you enjoy right now?" would also give you much more accurate results. In fact, even results more accurate than the inverse of the now-posted question for the purposes of the poll, as what you want to know (I believe) is what need fixing in general, not what needs it the most. Just saying, though I don't really mind, haha.

Late game activities are usually just systematically killing off the remaining stragglers, which is mainly combat. Its tedious because the AI is retarded. If the AI was actually smart, late game could actually be interesting. Its has a lot of interesting units, and tech to play with.

In part, I feel my previous post explains this, however, to add to it, I think that this is simply because late-game activities are generally more complex and tedious, not to mention that the effect of the single, tedious decision, may not have as great an impact on the game as the less tedious early decision. I think that theres no way around this in any game, as when a game is nearly done, you could hardly make any monumental, game-changing decisions, and every game, not just civ V, is like so--if you still could, then the early game would be rendered pointless. However, I do think that this effect isn't as bad as it is in games like Monopoly or Risk, and if the AI were more competitive, going for some kind of victory just like you, the late-game features would be more exciting, as 2 people could be neck and neck, and every choice for these 2 would still count, making stuff like city management far more exciting.

Right now, the game is settled in the first 200 turns at most: you've either won or lost the game for sure depending on your position at this stage, simply because no AI could pull of a victory in the full course of the game, so the only thing that really matters is whether or not you could. Because of this, the late game is more or less a formality, drawing a conclusion to what has already been settled. Although I'm not saying that it's horrible; its always fun being in the process of winning, its just that the small, tedious things don't really matter at this stage, in terms of determining the game. Sometimes what I do is simply aim to beat my fastest victory with a certain victory condition: this way, all the little things count, and they definitely are much more fun to do also.

In this sense, its not the mechanics, but the AI that needs to be reworked, though maybe they won't do this, seeing as how the AI never really seemed to aim for a victory in previous versions of the game either, so I'm guessing its on purpose.

Actually selecting techs and building improvements is too straightforward. You dont have to think much about that.
Just as city management I think. There is almost always one best sequence in production of buildings.

Diplomacy is either too simple (with CS) either too impredictable (with other civs)

As for wonders. In SP I usually build all of them. In MP - none (if the match is really challenging).

So we have only 3 things left. One is city placement, that was one of the most interesting decision making mechanic in all Civ games. And now that is still one of the most important things you decide. And there is no simple repeating pattern like in improvements, techs or city management.

The other is exploring. Exploring is always interesting when map is randomly generated. And its interesting to look at map as at alternate Earth. Something like "here is oil heavy region", "here is mountain ridge". But unfortunately right now exploring gives you too little benefit. You dont lose much if instead of building scouts or ships, you just develop your empire without knowing anything about the other parts of the map.

But for me the best part is policies. Now I understand that usually everyone always choose the same policies in all games.... But still I see great potential in them. And exactly policies are something that makes my civ feel like "level upping". Like in many RPGs (including MMO), you choose "perks". The system now probably close to WoW's talents.

I would vote for "experimenting MODs" if such option was available.

The only thing that keeps me from uninstalling Civilization V is the MODs and their continued efforts to make the game enjoyable.

I'm not playing the game regularly, but from time to time I like to check out and experiment the newest MODs to see how they can affect the game positively.

There's stuff to do besides war? The game discourages expansion with the happiness and policy cost (except with puppet states but that requires war), it discourages building up cities with road and building maintenance. There's no espionage, diplomacy, or missionary/executive units to give you something to do besides build military units. Military units are too expensive to keep around so you have to use them to fight right away. Exploration lasts the first couple of turns, and is fun, but then its over. The Policy/culture games I guess is the only other option, so I chose that by default.

I love to see my cities connected by roads - how very sad of me.

  30. Huge fan of the new social policies so that gets my vote.

Not much left to say. It was all said for me by jpbar81. Is that guy telepathic?

Mind you, in jumping on ICS, they've put so may impediments in the way of expanding - happiness, increased Social Policy costs, increased National Wonder costs - that it feels like I'm dragging a lead weight so now less fun.

In another thread someone said that Culture Bomb was one of the few fun things to do in Civ5. Struck a chord with me.

Besides combat, policies were the only thing I liked about Civ5 compared to prior Civ games.
