A Message from John Shirley, Author of Bioshock: Rapture, to the Bioshock Community

Mr. Shirley has informed me that I can share the following message with the Bioshock community. He said it was an author's note that was intended to be included in the book but was left out of the final version.
Author's note on BIOSHOCK: RAPTURE, the novel by John Shirley:

This novel is a dramatization of the backstory of BioShock and BioShock 2. It is essentially a “prequel” to the events in the first two BioShock games. It incorporates information I gleaned in playing the games through several times and in consulting with designers, online sites, books, interviews. I also pored over background and timeline materials provided for me by 2K and by Tor Books.

The tale begins shortly after Rapture was first conceived, and carries on, through Rapture’s civil war, into 1959. The main characters, and some minor characters, from Bioshock are to be found here; characters from Bioshock 2, like Sofia Lamb, and the Wales brothers and even Delta, as well as settings and historical details from BioShock 2, are also incorporated.

While we sometimes leap several years from one chapter to the next, the story’s arc is unmistakable, and is close as possible to the tale that emerges in the audio diaries, public address announcements, and radio conversation found in the game. It also incorporates consultancy provided by Ken Levine (through the conscientious efforts of Sarah Rosa). I drew terminology, large events, and characters from the game, but invented a certain amount of connective story and character background. I created a few new characters, as required in the composition of a novel, but never knowingly contradicted BioShock. As suggested by Ken Levine, the narrative’s chief protagonist is Bill McDonagh.

Most of the narrative threads begun in this book are resolved by its finale. A few are resolved within the games themselves.

I was very pleased to be involved in adapting this unique, artfully designed game.
[the novel will be released by TOR BOOKS in JULY]

Personally, I am EXTREMELY pumped that Mcdonagh is going to be the central protagonist. This is sounding more and more awesome all the time.

Never question the power of Sir Kyburz.

I found that extremely informative! I'm glad we've been given more of an idea of what we're buying into, and same as Kyburz, I'm excited about McDonagh. While I'm not excited about Sofia, I have a feeling she won't be nearly as annoying in a book.

You are now imagining McDonagh as a Duke Nukem style protagonist.

"My name is Bill McDonagh! And I'm coming to get the rest of you Parasite bastards!"

Very nice, interesting to learn McDonagh will be the main focus this time round. And now, we play the waiting game.

If the tale begins shortly after Rapture was first conceived, I would expect at least a nod to OOL and his involvement in supplying construction materials.

I think McDonagh is a great choice for protagonist. He's the only one who really stuck to principles right to the end, even after Ryan perverted his own philosophy, and I've always found him to be the most admirable character in all of Bioshock. This is perhaps the only bit of news about the book that could have convinced me to buy it.

McDonagh was described as Andrew Ryans conseince so having him as the main charachter should be interesting.

While I was looking forward to a prequel game, I guess the next best thing is a book about it. Thanks for the info Kyburz.

I'm almost speechless. I feel as if we are getting a new BioShock game! It sounds like it's going to stay true to what we know, and just build on that. Which is all we wanted right!? Ahh so excited!

Well said! Mcdonagh has always been probably my favorite character for exactly this reason. It should be interesting to see the author explore some of his innermost thoughts and maybe see scenes like his final confrontation with Ryan elaborated in detail. I have always wondered how Ryan handled this, I would think that it was difficult even for him. Mcdonagh seemed like one of the few people that Ryan would have honestly considered a friend.

This book should prove very interesting and yes don't question the power's of Kyburz lol , and the book should be interesting with Mcdonagh as the protagonist in the story, and then learning just about Rapture as it was in the beginning and then as things go on would be good since we have only seen it during the Civil War though the later part of it and then after the civil war as things were decaying. I have good hope for this book and can't wait to get my hands on it and read it.

This looks to be a great book, sadly this might be the last thing we will get for new content for Rapture as "BioShock:Infinite" is set in 1912 on "Columbia".

Hope Rapture is the setting again for a game or good movie as I am not impressed with "B:I", I probably will not be buying it, might give it a rental.

McDonagh is an amazing choice of character. Not only was he was perhaps the only true objectivist in the game, fighting for his ideals from and until the very end... but furthermore this should give us an interesting insight into the workings of "the council" in it's heyday, whom McDonagh was a member of.

Through Mcdonagh we're able to see not only Rapture at it's height but from the prespectives of both the ruling class (the council) and as McDonagh was a man of the people there view as well, or rather the view of the people who the city was made for. I'm looking foward to his arguments with Ryan over Fontaine Futuristics and of course hi meeting with the wall> I wonder if he greated McDonagh in the same way he greeted jack.

Great info ... thank you, Kyburz! I'm even more pumped for this now.

Yea im looking forward to this. Though I think this pretty much puts an end to the Rapture prequal game idea. I cant see them making a game and a book based on the same concept.
