It appears that Amazon is apparently selling a Steam download of Civ V for just $ 38.99 here:

That is a great development since we can now use our Amazon account to buy from Steam.

I'd be wary of using "Amazon Digital Services." I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it.. But, for a penny more you can get a disc and manual and such mailed to you. Really, there's already one level of digital-distribution: Steam, and Amazon apparently adds another? Correct me if I'm wrong.. Steamworks is fully integrated into Civ V so you know that is not coming out!
I haven't tested it but apparently its selling a Steam payment pass through much as Paypal does. Thus, there is no risk for regular Amazon customers. In the past I've paid for my Steam games using Paypal. In the future I am far more comfortable using Amazon for exactly the same service.
Amazon already allows their customers to use their account to buy from other third party vendors, thus, keeping their credit card number more secure. In addition, if something does go wrong with a third party vendor, Amazon will use their services to pressure the vendor to accomodate the customer. I had one experience like that and it worked out perfectly for me.
If someone here does buy Civ V using that link, then we will know exactly how it works if they report back here to tell us.
I buy all my internet products through Amazon now and have decided to buy all my video games from Steam in the future after being totally satisifed with Civ V and Shogun 2. Combining those vendors this way is a perfect solution for me.
Yeah, I'd like to see a clarification too, if they just sold you a product-key to put into Steam then right on! But, if it's another layer then thats getting all: Rube Goldberg-y.
If I'm reading it right, Amazon is selling a key, plus providing a download of a starter image, much like you'd get from a DVD.
So, it would be easy to buy the game just to get the key and then download from Steam rather than Amazon, just like you can do with the DVD. To be honest, I don't know why you'd even bother downloading from Amazon. I think Valve's CDN is on par with Amazon's, at least for digital product delivery, but I suppose there may be some areas that get better service from Amazon than Steam, so whatever.
Still, it seems to have all the positives that both SirMaru and headkase were looking for.
It works exactly like you suggest. I believe Amazon does provide a service that allows you to download the game data from them (which then gets installed in to Steam) or you can simply get the product key from Amazon and plug it directly in to Steam.
I just did this with a different Steamworks title and it worked well.![]()
