What happened to my city?

Ok so playing FFA as Zulu, I conquered Thebes, same turn an enemy Zulu player conquered my capital. A few turns later I conquer Athens (a CPU). After building up a few pikemen, Athens turns into the enemy players color. No mention of it being converted by a great artist. No battle and I had two pikemen so no way it was conquered.

I always thought it was impossible to convert a capital city with a great artist. Can anyone tell me what happened? Was this guy cheating or am I wrong about great artists?

Either he flipped it and you clicked A on the notification so you didnt see it or he city collapsed you. Sounds like a city collapse to me though.

You're wrong about artists at least. Your original capital is safe from artists but others are not.

It's likely you just missed the pop-up. That can happen if you're in a city screen or attacking a barb or something.
