Mafia 2 application has stopped working!!! Happens right after I click play in steam.

I log into steam and click play on mafia 2 after installing it with a retail disc. It says this immediately after I click play in the steam screen..."Mafia 2 application has stopped working" Runs through direct x install then will crash immediately after the small screen with the three men and mafia 2 underneath. I have ran as admin on a desktop shortcut with no luck. It seems no matter how i manipulate vga drivers or physx versions it always stops in the same exact part.

So here is the trouble shooting steps I have done so far.

I updated my gtx480 with the latest drivers... beta and non beta release from nvidia's website. I have also uninstalled physx and reinstalled it(Multiple versions of each). I have tried uninstalling physx and letting mafia update it and install it as well. However, it says its going to update to the newest version of physx sdk but doesnt when i let mafia auto install physx. Then the process ends. I have verified integrity of the file through steam as well. I have went through many of the troubleshooting on google and in the tech support threads here with no luck. I noticed you asked many to go to the event viewer etc.... so here are my errors from it.

    Here is another error

Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Mafia II Application because of this error.

    Program: Mafia II Application
    File:

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
    User Action
    1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
    2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
    3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
    4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
    5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

    Hi there,

The key element of information within the (much appreciated) detailed post above is

    Faulting module name: ntdll.dll

Luckily this is quite the generic error, and there are quite a few different solutions for it. Do a quick Google of ntdll.dll (and maybe follow it with your operating system, which you did not list, or preceed it with the term 'faulting module') and I am sure that there will be an easy fix.

Should this not resolve the mater (like if you get another Faulting Module at any point) then please do let me know

Talking Fixed and running thank you for your help and time!

The fix was to type in msconfig and disable all the non window startups pretty much. I am sure it was something to do with the overclocking software and autoboot software that came with my gpu and motherboard. All is running perfect. 6 hours trouble shooting myself before the post and in 10 mins it was fixed after the reply from this post. Couldnt be happier. Thank you for the support.

No worries man. Glad it was something as simple as that. There was a lot of info on that ntdll.dll file to wade through so it could have taken a lot longer!

    Hope you enjoy it.

Thumbs up Gigabytes OC Guru was the cause of the issue it seems.

When i start the gigabyte oc guru software that came with my gtx 480 soc mafia immediately crashes. When i choose not to allow the oc software to start on start up then the game functions perfectly. Just a little extra info to save someone else a headache.

I have that software myself - at least I think it is. Some kind of motherboard/processor driver plus a power-saving application of some description that I maybe should think about using...

    Thanks for the info, sir!
