how much different DLC is there for civ 5?
is there any free DLC?
I've played civ for years but never been online about it. I usually just buy the expansion packs when they hit the store so all this DLC stuff is new to me

DLC's add minor content for the vanilla game at a minor cost. Things like new leaders, maps and scenarios. They differ from expansions because they do not change the dynamic of the game, and can therefore be played with the rest of the communty regardless of which DLC you own, unlike (most) expansions which require everyone wanting to play to be using the same expansion.
There are currently 4 Civ DLC's (one of which is a two-pack) and 4 map DLC's. The only free DLC currently is Mongolia, which will be added to your game as soon as you get it. It also comes with a scenario that revolves around the Mongols. Otherwise, you have to pay for the rest.
A few notes:
-Spain+Inca pack and the new Polynesia pack both have scenarios
-Babylon has no accompanying scenario or extra content; its just a Civ.
-DLC nations were just recently enabled for multiplayer
-Its unknown if all players have to have the same DLC to be able to play, or if any of the DLC is disabled if someone doesn't have it.
thanks mate but funnily enough you really didn't answer my questions lol
the new DLC leaders exist in game as AI (tested when selecting random), but are unplayable (unless you own the relevant DLC). This would indicate the files for the new leaders are provided in the patches released prior to each expansion. THe DLC simply enables them to be user controlled.
you sure as I haven't seen the Spanish or the Inca in any of my games yet
was that DLC 5 bucks too
just as a test, create a random game with max # of ai's and select random for each.
I tested this as it was the introduction of nebuchadnezzar as an ai that triggered me to look on steam for the option to install him as a playable character.
Since they are doing DLC now, I'm really not sure if they will have a real "expansion". After all, its been through DLC and patching that they've added new Civs and even a new building (aqueduct). That alone makes me question if there will be a new expansion. That being said, I have a feeling that any expansion will have brand new Civs, and the DLC nations will likely remain DLC only.
Best as in best value? Spain+Inca without a doubt, since you're getting two civs. If you're talking about which Civ is best, then that's more of a matter of taste. If you like science, then go for Babylon (despite being the worst deal of the 4), or if you like war, then you'll be lucky to have Mongolia for free. Personally, the Inca are the coolest addition to the game and have an awesome Unique Trait. Hope that info helps!
thats a strange observation - i just tested this, too, and the only dlc civ i found was mongolia.
i created a huge map with 22 civs, start in future era (so i get satellites immediately and see their cities as soon as they found them)
the result was that only the vanilla civs plus mongolia showed up. the extra slots were filled with copies of existing civs (i found 3 aztecs and 2 persians - seems they share a common name pool for their cities - aztec 1 had tenachtitlan as capitol, aztec 2 had tlatelolco etc)
so there must be some difference between your civ 5 and mine![]()
