I defended this title against Scottie this morning. First game his Romans Galley dropped my cap after I got a galley from my first turn which went the other way and BW from second barb. Second game I had a word with Lincoln about what that ghastly Scottie had done in the previous games so one of their warriors attacks Scotties Indian cap early and wins 1.5 vs 1.5.

Third game we actually got soemthing going. My Romans versus his Vet Germans. I settler walk this time and realise I have gone completely the wrong way. I name a tile and settle next to a barb and take it down for 40. It shows me another barb way back the way I've come from but I only have one water tile so rather than HBR I just rush another settler and send it towards the barbs.

I settle and take the barb get another barb and am shown Egypt who I threaten for 25g to get 100g. Scottie gets Angkor and goes fundi. I get a couple more barbs and have plenty of money so rush a settler from each city and settle them all and backfill bronze & pottery. I get irrigation bonus with 8 cities and can produce 46 science p/t. Scottie has taken Karakoun. We meet and he loses his galley versus mine 1 - 1 which gives me breathing space as there could of been anything on it.

I tech construction & maths and have a healthy prod city doing 7 hammers per turn. Get a free cat in Rome and send it down a road with two more to the front line as he's now taken Thebes and I know he's coming for me. I switch production from barracks in prod city on the front line to 3 more cats and pump another from rome + lucetia. He attacks me with a GG legion army but I easily counter with the first army then I see Scottie pause and then leave.

The tech race was something like 13 - 4 to me and I could pretty much get them cats anywhere scottie landed so I think he threw in the towel. Good games and that ladies & gents is my first defence of a title!! ;-)

hmm well I probably should have played on and tested that becuase I could probably have given you enough units that having a cat army counter (or even a couple of them) would have been insufficient. But I was pissed off at myself so i rage quit heh....

and I was clearly winning the tech race 4-13...
your rush costs must have been throug the roof!

anyway we both had pressure to end the game then so oh well..

Liam made me challenge him for this title - and I took it from him :-/

1st game his Germans vs. my Romans. He wins.
I walk only one turn and settle in a balanced spot one tile away from a barb. I send the 1st warrior scouting and it sees his borders from a hill. Next turn a warrior army takes down a barb two tiles south - oh oh - how did he get that so fast. And another two single warriors are on the other side of me. Next turn I have two warrior armies heading my direction. So I army up. But he just camps one of my trees. So I rush a galley and put the WA on it and sail around and catch his 100g settler and found SoC - there is something possible besides the bleak start. But then he finds AW for fundy, attacks w/ 2 armies and I get disconnected, but would have lost anyways since I was out of gold and could not have come back with one city and a useless artist.

2nd game: My Indians beat his Indians.
I walk a little, pick up two friendlies, one for gold the other for Hbr. Settle on a prod resource and rush a horse the turn I settle. I take down various huts and have 4 horses in the field. All those huts give me techs Alpha and BW. When one of his stray horses crosses my territory, I take it out and he quits due to lack of gold, since he also only got techs from barbs and was without units.

3rd game: My Germans beat his Romans
That was a close one. I move a little and take down Beijing with a WA. He takes Colossus Thebes with the KT ?! :-( I get 7cities, he gets Ark (?) and SoC shortly after. I build 2 barracks and start pumping out WAs. He starts teching like crazy due to Colossus Thebes. A stray horse and my now upgraded legion armies meet at London, and I take his horse and London for Monarchy - nice. His KT shows up but retreats. I move towards Thebes, but know that Liam has cats already. I set that there are only single defenses in Thebes, so I attack with 3 inf/march.blitz armies and take Thebes with the last attack. I was about to secure my position on a hill by his main prod city, when he GB'ed Great Wall - I hate that thing. That game him a ton of time and to build elite units in his prod city with GL. So I was teching for knights and Engineering, while he was building elite cat armies and pike armies - sounds like a showdown. Which it was - I was hesitant, took a remote city of his and should have just focussed on taking Rome, since I had all other caps. But decided to battle it out at the choke point, which allmost backfired, since he managed to put up 3 march/inf/blitz fundy cat armies with pike armies that tore through many of my hesitant KAs and single archers. But in the end I won a button race and two 11 vs. 7 battles to kill two of his CAs. The next turn his cursor jumped and his last CA moved around my last elite KA instead of attacking. So I finished it for the game. That was close - if my KA had not killed two of the CAs in close battles, I would have lost Thebes and potentially more. I had more armies coming, but they were not elite. But I did a good bit expanding too, so I would have been able to put up some defenses. Was a fun game!

    GG Liam.

Yeah it was agreat game. That production centre was awesome giving me a cat every turn and with a road from Rome i was putting together armies for fun. I was a little annoyed how that cat army walked round you at the button race but to be honest if I hadn't og been greedy waiting for nav to get EIC and built GW before you took Thebes I would of been much stronger in defence/counters. I had to rush it at the end because of the huge road I'd put to thebes to go and send vet pikes but you attacked me just in time. Nice to have games like that! Well done and I'll be wanting my title back sooner than later!! ;-)

I was wondering if you just got the GB or if you saved it for something bigger. That road sure complicated things for you. But the GW can be so strong when timed right. And you had enough prod and trade left even without Colossus Thebes.

Without Thebes, I would not have able to tech to knights and engineering that quickly.

I thought I had enough with 4 elite cat armies and vet pikes but they didn't fortify that tree spot in time which meant you could get through. Was a very enjoyable game though.

It is quite a lot of work to be king of all the middle tier. All these media interviews, talk shows and social events I need to attend ... Takes away my precious civ playing time. Nevertheless I will gladly try to make time for common people to challenge his highness for this prestigious title

Make time for me then, though I need to get back my FFA king title. But I already feel like I am a god of FFA after a monster game with Mawpawk that I am sure he would be happy to share

I will most likely be able to grant an audience today, but only to deserving, humble and brave challengers that know how to court a king!

Btw, did anybody notice that I might be enjoying this a little too much ?!

    I challenged.
lost a german vs german game - class play from rem.. the game just slowly slipped out of my hands as it does against a quality player.
had some bad luck vs the AI in a series of battles but thats the way the game goes - rem had his own bad luck too and made lemonade

Second game i got a chinese cap and 7cog - but things got desperate when wifey told me i had to leave (take the kids swimming) or I'd be fired out of a real catapult... so i launched an attack on a galley and rem0 replled it with his own galley.
I still had quite a lot going on - But I couldnt stay any longer....

    Those were 2 fun challenges.

1st game vs. Maw was Indian mirror match and I won that one due to more gold, AI cap and a horse of mine killed his HA 3 vs. 4.5 from a hill. He did not even have his 100g by then, but did decent expansion. I got 7cities (i think), KT and SoC and located his cities via galley and would have launched a fundy attack soon anyways.

2nd game: My Rome vs. his Germans. I start at end of peninsula. Walk across a huge desert area just to see his borders. So I walk all the way back to my starting spot and settle. Want to take down 2 barbs but he fnished one barb first :-( I managed to counter his initial rush due to long distance. But I was so far behind that I should have quit. But I got KT and 4 cities out and a GL, so I decided to stick around and see if I can bother him a little with a surprise elite LAs attack. Took way too long, he had KAs by then and took down a ton of AI cities. Well, the surprise worked and I took 4 of his cities within 2 turns. But he was able to repel that and that was that :-)

3rd game was great. My Germans vs. his Romans. We both take AI caps, and bump into each other on a one tile wide connection between the land masses. I find AW for pyramids (in all 3 games btw ...), but he GB'ed the GW using SoC GPs. Damn - looking bleak now since teching to Feud and Engineering takes a long time. I see a ton of purple borders appearing :-( But luckily I had AW for Republic, so I did my own expansion to islands and some mainland, taking Kyoto in the process. I had no gold, but those 3 hammer trees come in handy. So it is mostly expansion for a long time, but then he gets a GA and flips one of my new cities, capturing a settler of mine that was right outside of it too - :-( I wanted to quit right there, but noticed that he was willing to give up the GW protection for a few turns. So I continued and prepared a lit galley with single legions next to a nice 4 city island of his. He dropped another of my new cities a few turns later and I retaliated by dropping two of his cities the same turn. That was the game changer, since I got some techs and a foothold in his territory. Took my other cities back, teched to engineering and steam power, took Paris from him while he started boat-dropping all my emtpy one tile island cities. But I had enough attack power left, a cruiser fleet and a GS for IND, to launch an attack on Rome. He managed to kill two of my fleet supported KAs in even battles, but I had one army too much for him and took Rome for the 5/5 dom victory - great game and I did not think that I would win that ...

    Vs. Scottie:
1st Germans vs. Germans was great. I lost WA to Aztecs, but Scottie apparently lost some stuff to the AI too. I managed to get 100g earlier and the upper hand later when killing two of his injured warrior armies and taking Karakorum, that he was working on before, so they did not archer army up.

2nd game Scottie probably would have won with that start and the attack force. But I was prepared for the galley and luckily won the 1.5 vs. 1. If he had not had the time pressure, he probably could have just boxed me in. We'll never know, but his start to the game was insanely good with 7 cities and taking Beijing before I could.

nasty luck in my latest challenge - had 3 games and in two i walked and found him settled already. first game i settled first without seeing him and without a decent start (still if i had walked further id have just died immediatly) and he had two warriors in my direction - second I had nowhere two trees to settle on besides way back at my starting location. third i walked into a peninsular - no two trees to settle on besides starting location - hole kept getting deeper as i wandered down the peninsular. in the end i settled with one tree rather than walk about 5 turns back to the start...

third of course wasnt part of this but goes to show how either unlucky or ddumb my settler walking was

Scottie had a rough time yesterday. First round was 3-0 in my favor (one was not a challenge game), 2nd round was 2-1. Most games were pretty short. I settled early in most games, but not ouf of caution, but either b/c I picked up enough gold already or saw an AI cap or had a good spot.

In some of those games I think you played it a little too risky (e.g. India vs. Rome). The Aztecs and Spanish AIs were close to your settlers and you could have tried to take them rather than pulling off a fancy move on my innocent warriors.

Well, neither of them were official challenges, since Scottie never replied with "yes" when I asked him if that was a challenge. But in both rounds we used only those 3 civs :-)

I think we should enforce some kind of waiting period after a challenge, e.g. you cannot challenge for the same title twice in one day. If you lose it, then you also have to wait a day or so until you can challenge again.

Otherwise we have these posts where the king loses it, challenges again, regains it, gets challenged again, loses it ... all within one day. Until they are running out of time and the guy who happens to win the last round, gets it :-/

A challenge should be a privilege :-D Being allowed to challenge multiple times in a row makes it less special.

Yup, After his failed attempt at your title, his Mirror King title should have been on the line.

You are of course King and can make such a decree!

actually i didnt think the 2nd was a challenge as we didnt agree at the beginning... (memory is hazy now but..).
but whatever. I did however use the 3 civs in a kind of - "i want to avoid that weird situation where we play again and you go huh zulu? thats not middle teir?"

yeah go for my mirror title challenge as many times as you like ill demand it next time!!
I keep forgetting I have that. - actually I just wanted the games against a good player (and I still have germans to go in the 8 man bracket) - pity they were all quick ones.

BTW in terms of playing risky - do you mean the one where i steped around the barb to fight you?

I am OK with counting it as 0, 1 or 2 title defenses. Does not make a difference to me. But I would appreciate a clear msg "I challenge thou!". Raises the excitement!

Yes, I was referring to the one where you stepped around the barb. 2 AIs were within reach of your side of the barb. Maybe u chose ur walking path carfeully to avoid seeing their borders ;-)

Yup clearly i did. Or maybe i was just blind. It seemed to me that walking that way would probably just result in me having nowhere to settle with 2 trees and you being 3 warriors up and a barb (maybe 40g) give or take.

Defended against Liam yesterday. 2 short games. My Romans beat his Germans. I walkin on London for Monarchy, get HBR and my horse takes his 2nd barb hut. First gave him tech and my horse won 1 vs. 1.5. He concedes. 2nd game my Germans get a great start against his Indians. Liam takes Kyoto in 3500BC, I take Paris with the KT in 3400BC. Find plenty of friendlies and barbs, Liam has two horses out, but I have several warriors, archers and find 7cities. He concedes. I think this would have been worth playing out the next few turns, since ur warriors could have defended ur horse army and u might have been able to kill some of my units. But I also took Beijing with the KT, so it did look dull.

Have been trying to hook up with Grizz for the last 3 days, but we didnt manage yet.

I got alphabet with only barb in the second one and you could of put elite warrior armies everywhere after 7cog. I was right at the bottom so wasn't much point. Well defended.

    2 in with REM0

    Gm1 Rome v Rome
We settle 4 tiles apart. He is attackng a barb and injured to one warrior unit on the hill. He has one warrior in his cap and I move two warriors into his trees. Next turn he moves the injured unit back to his cap and attacks with 1.5-1,5 off the hill and wins leavingme with 1 unit. I figure all he has is the injured unit so I attack his cap and win the 1-.67. GG rem0

Gm2 Me German vs Him India. He is low on a peninsula and I walk in on Greece. He gets 7c but I find nice gold and get SoC for to GE which is the equivilent of 7c. He gets Angor Watt and I get temples and the Knight wonder. Long story short my 2LA and Knght take his cap while my other 8 LAs defend my caps against his HA's. GG rem0

    Bow to the new king!

First game I saw you settle and decided to force a quick game and settled on hills 2 tiles away from a barb on a hill. I saw his two warriors, decided to make it a button race to who takes the barb, but of course my warrior gets injured twice in the 1.5 vs. 0.5 battle ... Had to retreat, took the chance for the even battle, won, but next turn the game of course highlights the warrior outside the cap first. I mash 'B' as fast as I can, but Grizz had the XBox ready-up advantage, even tho I was host. Nice move, I did not know that you had no gold either.

2nd game I was screwed from the get. Settle on turn 2 next to a barb and the barb gives me pottery :-) My 2 warriors find a German warrior at the exit of the peninsula. He kills one warrior, I kill his and create a choke point. The barb showed me AW nearby, but I had no gold. Had to work on a galley for 8 turns ... Took AW and found 7cities 3 turns later - a glimpse of hope. But not really, since Grizz found Ark, SoC for 2 GEs and KT. So my lil' comeback advantage was pretty much moot. I teched BW and Hbr (10 turns!!!) while banking hammers in the 100g city. I built 2 vet HAs, a vet AA and a vet WA and shipped them to him. I drop the AA, WA and militia off between his 2 caps and left the HAs on the boat for now, to see what he would do. He did not attack yet and silly me forgot to move the HAs off the boat that same turn ... Next turn his XBox is ready before mine again and a slew of legion attacks ensues during which I can only watch :-/ My AA and WA and militia win a bunch of battles and injure many of his LA armies, but he eventually took em out. I wonder what I could have done if I had dropped off the HAs. While all this happens he had 2 LAs and the KT by my cap. My nice prod city w/ barracks was on an island nearby, so I did not manage to send enough good troops over in time and that was it.

A nice run REM, 6 in a row. Puts you second only to Mawpawk, I think, in ability to hang on to a crown.
