Thread: We will get another Bioshock game in Rapture, won't we?

Nah, talking about it here wouldnt be 'clamped down on' just in case we might 'give away the secret'. Its all speculation (actually go Google "Bioshock MMO' to see rumors years ago about a possible bioshock MMO game (and at the same time a CIV MMO ????). )

This is a public forum and you cant copyright ideas that you present publicly (and game ideas being a dime a dozen, there isnt really much credit (beyond someones ego) you could take when all the real work is making the game.

A crappy cookie cutter MMO actually wouldnt be that hard for them to do if they wanted to milk the Bioshock brand (though they probably would want to wait out the bad economy, moneywise).

But I dont want yet another lame stagnated 15-year old technology WOW-like clone and have suggested ALOT of hard features that most companies couldnt carry out without a really huge effort (and even then liklely couldnt do it right) to move into the next generation of MMOs. IG might claim to be 'cutting edge' and a 'pusher of boundries' but really all they have done are tiny mouse steps forward at most -- pretty much just 'more of the same' and any MMO would probably be the same.

In a nutshell the new 'magnitude' of advancement will be major player involvement in creating the games content (requiring easy to use tools - developing them doubles the cost/effort). MMOs need constant new content to keep people playing and the only real way to get enough would be to have players add it (they have a thousand times as much imagination as the game makers have and all that manpower that would not have to be paid for). Enabling the players to do so is the difficult part. Along with a generic game mechanism (major advancement #3) a company could create many MMOs in different niche genres which could fit more players interests and do an end-run around the Monster-MMOs way of operating.

Which game company has the guts to try that has yet to be seen.

If the game was to mix first and third person formats, I was thinking of 2 main types of game:-

    1. Environment based switching:-

    a. Third person would be played in open spaces like outside of Rapture, streets, plaza's, halls etc.
    b. First person would be played inside buildings, rooms, corridors, submarines etc.

    2. Ability based switching:-

    a. Third person would be used for sprint, jump, fast swim, kick, punch, stab with syringe, and melee fighting, similar to Assassins Creed, Tomb Raider etc. (Eleanor acting/playing like Lara Croft in a Big Sisters diving suit, might be interesting!)
    b. First person would be used for, walk, slow swim, reconnaissance, sniping, search and destroy, hacking, adopting, rescuing, harvesting etc.

I don't know which of the two, the Environmental or the Abilities type of game play, would be easier for the game developers to use.

As long as they dont flip back and forth mercilessly/constantly -its disorieting) or where it impacts important actions (GTA had a way of going 3rd person that would mess up your orientation when you were trying to stear in some situations).

Being able to select NOT to go 3rd person when you want would be a good option. But you want it to appreciate the fancy maneuvers (at least until youve done them all 20 times)

Fighting game type actions (and going 3rd for them) might not work well when you have multiple opponents/ or more complex terrain that you are fighting on. Locking into long-ish canned maneuvers can be bothersome when you need flexibility (unless like the kung-fu movies all the opponents stupidfly wait to attack one at a time)

Thinking about my MMORPG game ideas - there would be alot more manual manipulations of things (ordinary climbing, picking up stuff (like sifting through debris to look for goodies), throwing/shoving objects, using tools, that would also bring differences in the way players move and interact with the terrain/props/NPCs. Thats getting a bit too detailed for a Solo 'action' game.

Actually in BS1/BS2 they kinda blew it -- they didnt always take advantage of what they did have --- you got tutorials at the start for crouch, strike debris to go thru blocked path, jump over, and then apart from a few locations you really never much did those things. They could have had dozens more obstacles, hidden/obscured rooms to find/go thru, but seemed to largely ignore that aspect (stuff really optional to the game but fun for some people to find)...

Hmm, but instead of a new Rapture game they create Mod tools and useable terrain assets from the old ones (there are tons of textures/objects/NPCs/rooms they could extract just to get the thing rolling ....

New Solo 'levels' created by players... (and mechanism to chain them)

Allow multiple players (reuse the MP components) - might as well include the MP game scenario logic to allow new 'Maps' for same type of basic MP operation )allow NPCs in the MP environment so players could create cooperative scenarios)

Then create some sample 'levels' to go along with the basic package (they would need to test that their 'tools' actually work worth a damn).

    Call it RAPTURE FOREVER ....

Would something like that make them enough money to justify the development cost ???

    ---

If they were smart they would have something like that (ALL OF THE ABOVE) for Infinite because Im not sure how you can get/milk sequel games out of the Infinite 'one-trick-pony' plotline. Unfortunately most cost effective way to do it is design it from the start.

Plot is completely open to make that happen (and it has the most potential for 'twists').

    EITHER

is being chased by gubermint agents (to put her in one of those liquid filled tubes in Area 51) and heads back to Rapture 'to be safe' (maybe add the factor of them following her there)

    OR

'Sees the world' and wants to go back to Rapture (after just a few years) to save everyone else (Tenenbaum involvement again) and actually becomes 'the savior' (but not the way her deranged mother thought)

And as has been previously discussed her Big Sister type movement abilities can make the game more 3D oriented (the big 'new' gimmick in Infinite...)

(Oh and add Modding to give the game sales 'some legs')

i would love to see another return to Rapture. i'm currently playing through bioshock(1) again after a friend organised a few gamernights on the multiplayer (which although not needed on such an amazing game is one of the most fun MP's ive played) and loving it so much. this is my third or fourth play through on the orginal. Rapture is the most beautiful and involving setting of any video game ive ever played.

its not hard to make a pausable storyline for a return, Fontaine with all his money could have started construction of a separate area of rapture out of sight of andrew ryan as he had access to leave rapture. building a secret entrance. or andrew ryan doing the same to keep a secret child hidden away from the degredation of what happened in rapture. explorers stumbling across rapture by accident or design.

i would love anything. some DLC for either 1 or 2 would be sweet. im sure bioshock infinate is going to be amazing but i dont see how it can top rapture, where the city is as important as the characters and gameplay

please please please make a return to rapture in some form or other

For a second, I thought you said you wanted to play *Sofia* Lamb.

    Heh.

REAL Moral decision -- would have been YOU having Sofia by the neck at the end of BS2 and Eleanor either telling you to 'off' her (bad ending)
or trying to convince you to 'spare her' (good ending) --- or do I have those switched ???

I always did wonder what happened to Eleanor,
and it would be awesome to play as her in a third
    game.

  10. #130
Yes, I did to, because, where can she go in the middle off te Atlantic Ocean, without a boat, only Sinclairs live boat that is only made to rise up to the surface. Eleanor will need to go back to Rapture for food, so you can play as here in Bioshock 4. It might be an option, what do you think?

Sinclair would have already had his 'ducks in a row' and his oversized 'Lifeboat' probably had some kind of propulsion (at least to get to Iceland a few hundred miles away, even if slowly). Its structure does look sufficient to handle any storm (and the North Atlantic was known for bad storms).

As far as going back, it will probably be more of Eleanor after seeing the Surface (possibly being chased about by various authorities) deciding that the people still trapped down there deserved to be saved as well. Tenenbaum would likely fit into the plot because to return to the World, the Splicers need to be 'cured'. The ending may include that once saved, some may actually want to stay to rebuild.

Add some elements of the Surface following that return (lots of potential for violence there with Cold War involvement of somekind).

I would really like to return to Rapture. To see it completely end. because i would always see it as this
BS1 was the beginning of the rapture story.
    BS2 was the mid point.
BS3 would be the end of the rapture series.
Now for one, How many people have escaped rapture, jack, tennenbaum, Porter, elanor and possibly sofia, and a lot of little sisters. I always thought somebody would reveal the existance of rapture to the world. The gov't would get involved because they always want science stuff. Scavengers would go to loot the place etc. And tennenbaum has the cure, so maybe you can save the citizens and cure the splicers of rapture.
    - and i agree with watchman, I'm interested in infinite, but it just seems a little to fantasy-ish.
    - And people say Levine wont ever go back because he said so. He said he was going to avoid MP in infinite and he still attempted it, maybe still is.

After Ryan died there was alot of chaos and many people may have managed to escape -- needing subs/bathyspheres/diving suits or paying smugglers to get them away. Sofia Lamb did not rule all of Rapture (possibly only a fraction of it) and people from the other parts likely would find ways to get to the Surface (who says how long it took Sofia to 'get her act together' so that she had an organized ability to stop people from leaving).

With some of those additional escapees making it back to civilization alive, there is plenty of possibilities for various government/agencies/adventurers to hear about the place and figure if it was worth going to Rapture (they may even actually have been visiting it for years before BS2 took place).

Im not sure how Rapture would 'end'. Getting the Splicers cured would be good, but to finish the place off itself -- maybe one of the governments nuking it after finding out what a threat it was to Civilization, or to deny the technology to their enemies (maybe with a dramatic triggering the A-bomb by the character themself (another 'moral choice' to save the remaining people in Rapture or Civilization....)

    Actually that couldnt hurt.

You get a petition with 100000 customers listed/signed and that WOULD get their notice.

The first thing they might wonder at is where are all these people who signed - they certainly arent to be found on THIS near dead Bioshock forum.

The problem of course is how are you going to get that (a Bring back Rapture Facepage ???)

Petitions are a poor representation of what sales figures would look like which is what governs whether a game would be made or not. It's easy and free to sign a petition, it's a lot harder to spend £40.

  18. #138
Customer surveys cost the company money and might not give much better indicator.

Since only a fraction of the potential customers are likely to see/sign a petition it often indicated the sentiment of many more players than the actual petition count.

As I said "Actually that couldnt hurt." except maybe internally at the company to certain parties who are pushing an alternative idea (but that 'hurt' is opposite for the Rapture 3 cause...)

There's are almost endless possibilities for more plots in Rapture and thereby a sequel.
    1) Tenenbaum returns to Rapture to cure splicing afflictions...
    2) The thinker needs to prevent rapture, and thereby itself from collapsing. Using unspliced genetic samples from the original inhabitants the Thinker is able to partially repopulate Rapture. The people are perhaps given estimated peronalities recreated from avaliable data. The "new" population sets about restoring Rapture to it's former glory, and then...?
    3) Virtually all life in Rapture dies out. Explores find the city and scientists, archeologists, military etc come rushing in to investigate. Most of Rapture is flooded and/or withour power so the newcommers prioritise restoring power.
As the power supply is turned back on and thereby so is the Thinker. The thinker is forced to follow a basic command doctrine hard coded into it since it's creation. Protect Rapture from the parasites.
Oh, and the newcommers also discover this interesting substance that the former inhabitants called ADAM, maybe it's worth letting the scientists taking a further look at? ...
    4) Something completely different happends in a different part of Rapture. I mean the place is huge. We've only seen a small part of the central sections.
    5) To prevent the Little Sisters from ever being created Tanenbaum and the thinker finds a way to twist the timeline to prevent an event where they believe things went wrong. They could prevent the discovery of the ADAM seaslugs. Or Tanenbaum could have discovered that a cure against splicing is impossible but she has managed to create an innoculation that makes people immune to ADAM.

While I'd love to see Rapture at it's peak I don't really see many plots for a Bioshock prequel.
It would have to be a very different kind of game.
Sim Rapture or something, but heck, I'd buy it
(although a mayor style management of Rapture kinda goes against Andrew Ryans vision of the city

Rapture Tycoon might bemore like it. (By the way. Has anyone else noticed, that for all the talk of Rapture citizens working for themselves and promotion of free enterprise there seemed to be very little of that? It seems to me that 90% of Rapture's commerce and industri is dominated by just a handful of buisnesses with complete monopolies in their field.)

Most of all I'd love to see someone attempt to restore Rapture so we can see it shine again, and recolonized at least partially.
Besides, the more normal people who live there, the more is at stake in the missions.
That's where a prequel would fail horribly. I mean, in BS1 and BS2 choices matter, and when you rescue a little sister you save (or take) a life that will now live a full life and grow to old age. It's hard to see the point of doing good (or bad) in pre war rapture when you know they'll all die horrible deaths soon anyway.

A sequel could work with the Tenenbaum+Thinker Cure and maybe with Ryan still being alive for the twist. Lots of people thought it odd that Ryan would simply give up like that especially since Atlas was almost beat and Rapture was far from dead. There would have to be a main plot. That might be intruders from the Surface from the Cold War still going in the years following Bioshock2 and Minervas Den. Perhaps there could be a larger sandbox component for the Fixing the City and then firefighting the intrusions climaxing in some battle with the outside. The Rapture population might still be in the thousands and logical replacement might be clones of intact people.

The closed interior spaces dont allow the type of new 3D maneuvering in Bioshock:Infinite. The developers would have to come up with something else. The company has the old assets and even many locations could be recycled.

The game still has to have significant shooter elements and maybe vermin have grown to give players targets other than Splicers added to however many outsiders might be crawking about.

Some Mod'ing capability may be a nice addition.

I really think that if a third Rapture game should be made, it should either take place in the Cold War (with the feuding governments on a race to find and keep Rapture to themselves or something) or perhaps, it could have a plot twist where a character who was known to be dead from a past Bioshock game is really alive and perhaps, this character may either: assist you on your journey in Rapture or this character is really the new ruler of Rapture or something.

Scenario could be 1/3 way thru you figure out Ryan is still alive. He had faked his death like Fontaine to finally get Atlas and Jack finished that before leaving. Thats a delayed twist. Ryan spent the years between Bioshock 1 and Bioshock 2 trying to keep Rapture alive. Lambs little situation was really just a sideshow only a small part of Rapture. Now its time to fix the City and Ryan gets Tenebaum back to do her cure. The surface intrudes with ColdWar minions wanting to grab Raptures technology or keep it from their coldwar enemy. Lots of fighting inside with some strategic generation of some battles to thwart the surface people. Finally Rapture wins with somehow the secret intact and Ryan destroys the Lighthouse to hide Rapture better and final scenes are cured splicers rebuilding. Who you are in it could be another faceless voiceless one who maybe turns out to be Ryans other son so that the dynasty can continue. What kind of moral choices? Was arbitrary in previous games so just make something up with little impact on the final outcome. Reuse alot of the previous game stuff to cut down on costs. Maybe add some submarine and ocean action in the fighting. Maybe have it modable to create battle situations though mod tools might be too much work.

I would like to see a Bioshock set during the Rapture Civil War, and maybe a bit after. That way we could see what Rapture looked like before it went to hell.

I'm with Ken Levine on this one. Rapture has gotten old and we need a new environment. Thankfully, Infinite just does that. Bio 1 and 2 is already too much Rapture.

Only thing that saddens me is that they could've ended Rapture much better. I mean the ending was cool and in stuff, but I didn't really enjoy the gameplay as much in my personal opinion.

Post Manerva's Den Rapture where splicers have formed different gangs, with each vying for control of Rapture. You choose which gang you're affiliated to and can take different quests that gain you money or favor. Each gang is different; either possessing unique weapon upgrades, unique plasmids, or their own brand of Big Daddy to aid their little sisters. Basically a game where you try to rise to the top both in gang hierarchy and territory control. I think it would be fun.

I think so. BioShock Infinite is a confusing but very good prequel. There cant be another game in Colombia. The storyline in Infinite does not allow it.

Sandbox where YOU are the deciding factor (whatshis name in GTA san andreas)

I think with BS1/BS2/Minervas/DLC/MP theres enough basic scenery to make a good sized super map (recombine it to fill in to full size and placing changeable props inside can vary reused duplicated 'generic' locations quite alot.

We have ALL the props and minion types which could be largely sufficient (add a few variations)
Heck they even have a bunch of Infiite props now that could be appropriate

    Ack ..... GTA - Rapture

Bunch of missions, Some overall plot thats long enough (big map IS needed for this)

Resources that continually require reacquiring/maintaining control to stretch activities between missions.

Some kind of side taking with the factions to vary who you fight against and when (can be randomized some to make replay different each time)

Save money reusing the stuff from previous games - graphics need not be that much better, spend more money to make the factions and the minions (theirs and yours) act correctly - strategy and tactics for a fairly challenging game (mission scripting too -- SanAndreas had way too few missions - they were the most fun and challenging)

Losts of sand box activity for when you just feel like screwing around....
