Another late game crash
Hello to all the forum members,
I am having much the same problem as many other users have identified with the late game crashes as the screen scrolls to another point on the map.
System:
Windows 64 Ultimate
Asus Maximus III Extreme
Intel I5 - 750 3.4 Ghz
Corsair Dominator 8gig cas 7
Asus Matrix Platinum HD 5870 2 Gig
Asus Xonar DX 2
I have been lurking for a bit trying the various solutions offered
Re load the game
Microsoft DX 11 hot fix and Heaven Benchmark test
Reduce the screen resolution, remove the eye candy options, remove the automatic unit, etc...
I have tried playing at lesser resolutions with eye candy removed under DX11 and DX9 settings with no luck.
I have tried playing in Windows compatible mode, run as administrator, execute the program through Steam, from the desktop, from the folder.
Initially I played an introduction game (Settler??, huge map) and was able to get to the end.
However, this time I played under "Chieftain"??, huge map, marathon (DX 11) and by turn 900, the game was starting to crash at every 3rd or 4th turn. In my case, The screen would scroll to South America where I had a war going with quite a few units. The bottom of the screen would generate fine but the upper half would start to generate, create black squares and then Voila! Insta Freeze!! It would either freeze and I had to use Task manager to close and re start the PC because it also seemed to hang on sound or generate some sort of buzzing sound in the speakers. Other times it would just throw me back out into Windows .
I tried to continue (being stubborn and not knowing about this forum where others users have identified the same problem) under DX9, managed to get to turn 1000 with saves before every turn, fingers crossed, prayer to the gods but nothing seems to have worked, now I also get the same problem over Africa (where once again I have quite a few units posted). The only difference between the DX11 and DX9 is that DX9 just freezes, no rendering of the screen, nothing, just freeze and I have to use Task manager to close the game.
On another note, the lag time between the turns has increased to about a minute plus per turn and about the same if I take over a city while I wait for the screen to come back with "annex, puppet, etc...
I am in a way glad to know this is an identified issue with the program and nothing with the PC as I was surprised after running benchmarks with memtest, prime and a few others to have the system react this way. None of my Temp's have been above average as the rig is water cooled.
But quite disappointed at another game hitting the market without proper testing and having the companies try to put the blame on the owners of the computers instead of realizing these systems are not one size fits all gaming consoles and if they are in the PC market they should be testing more then a few pc configurations. After reading quite a few pages on this forum it seems that a lot of the high end systems are crashing. What are we suppose to play the games on, NASA super computers???
Anyhow, one user pointed out that, we (the ones with the crashes) are probably a minute part of the market. I think it is the other way around, there are probably many users having issues but like me, they do not frequent the forums and are unaware, so they just give up on the game and move on. Once you have spent the equivalent of 60$ of your time trying to get it working and it is not, frustration sets in and you either park the game until you need the disk space and remove it or they just remove it, take a "lessons learned" approach and go to another game.

well said. i can't imagine that we are in the minority here. and people's machines all have different video cards, mobos and CPUs, so saying it's specific to some hardware is a copout on 2K's part.
i too have tried everything short of re-installing (which won't change anything clearly). i have 2 games that display the scroll crash every single time you launch them, regardless of settings. if 2K says they can't reproduce it, they can come to my place for a demonstration
i even just upgraded my RAM solely to see if this solves my crashing issues - no luck!
long wait for this game. longer wait now since their QA group must all have the same machines, playing the same map sizes, with prally only dx9/dx11 being the only testing difference
new hardware specs:
Win7 64 Home Prem
Core-i7 2600K
Asus P8P67 Pro (not using any of the bad SATA connectors!!)
8GB RipjawsX DDR3-1600
Sapphire AMD 6950

Would it work to insert the title of this thread into the song "...just another manic Monday. Wo-O-oh."
Something like "just another late game cra-ash. Wo-O-oh."

Crashes while screen is scrolling also happens to me quite often when playing a huge map... Try zooming in more while playing (not as much on-screen to process) and switch to resource view between turns. That works for me!
(Oh, and save every turn just in case)
