How does Civ V rate with you compared to 2 other top competitors?

How does Civ V rate with you compared to 2 other top competitors? The following are also turn based strategy games: Hearts of Iron 3 and Europa Universalis 3.

ALL THREE games have a lot of bugs but all three appear to be very enjoyble in spite of all their bugs.

I have only played Civ V among those three and, thus, voted "Cannot render an opinion since never played all 3."

Frankly, I'm thinking of buying one of those others if Civ V doesn't get a big improvement in AI combat strategy in the next 60 days. I may rely on the results of this poll to make my choice. If Civ V wins this poll, I'll stick with it for another year.

It's difficult to really compare these three. HoI is really very focused on the military aspect and EU is really more catering to the economic/diplomatic game. Both of them are far better simulations than Civ V, which sort of avoids focusing on either military or economics/diplomacy and instead acts like a supercharged board game.

I would have said that Galactic Civilizations, Elemental and Sins of a Solar Empire would be better competitors to Civ V. I suppose that EU would be worthy of that list too, but it's really targeted toward a different (and much smaller) sector of the gaming market.

I can't really vote either as I have never even heard of the other two games. I do know that I have played Civ for close to, what is it, 15-20 years??? While never even seeing the other games you mentioned. So yeah, I guess I should be an option 4 but I really want to vote option 1 so I will refrain from voting at all.

Its good to see you liked EU 3. I just checked my records and still have my serial number and a download slot for it at GamersGate. I had totally forgot I purchased it already in 2007 and it disappeared when I sent my old PC to a family friend 8 months ago after uninstalling all applications other than MS Office 2003. Since I now use MS Office 2010, that older application was allowed to be given away with the backup installation disks.

I guess, if Civ V starts to bore me, I can try EU 3 again at zero cost. LOL.

Before I go down that route, I'm hoping the Feb patch gets my interest up again in Civ V.

Actually, if I did go back to EU 3, it would probably be better to just forget the EU 3 from Gamersgate and get the whole package for $ 40 from Steam which would include the complete version plus the Divine Wind add on. The one I got was the original without any addons.

I voted for HoI3 on the basis that I liked HoI2 better than Civ5. Wouldn't it have made more sense to have put Empire Total War in the poll?

Very good, but EU3's RTS. So is HoI. They're both very difficult games to master (I'm still confused with EU3, and I've had it for a few months).

Victoria 2 and EU3 are fairly similar games. The former's during a later time period, and I believe it only goes for ~100 years, compared to EU3's 422.

Last I checked HOI3 and EU3 were pausable real-time strategy. NOT turn based.

I voted for EU3, although I think I still like the "potential" of both HOI3 and CIV5 better. I've read many complaints here from disappointed CIV5 players, and I do sympathize with the argument that the game should have been in a more "game-ready" state than it was upon release. Personally, I was more disappointed in HOI3, but that opinion was likely influenced by my expectations, based on the many hours of enjoyment I received from playing HOI2. Perhaps EU3 wins my vote because I really had no significant expectations when I began playing. My favorite CIV game was CIV2; I would still play it today if offered. CIV3 turned me off. I tried CIV4, and I think I would have liked it better if I had given it more of a chance, but other interests pulled me away. CIV5 had a slight "nostalgic" pull for me, like going back home after having moved away many years before. I've decided that HOI3 will never match its potential, but I'm unwilling to to be that pessimistic (yet) about CIV5.

HoI is pretty terrible, unless you have 30 hours to try and learn how to play.

CiV is also pretty bad. Boring repetitive gameplay, then I hit the 1800's and crash.. I've started over 50 games and finished only 3.

Eu3, especially now with the Divine Wind expansion is definitely the best out of this bunch. Great game, especially considering you can get it with all the expansions for probably less than $30... a much better value than anything 2k could put out.

btw HOI and EU3 are NOT ciV's top two competitors.... Paradox is a pretty small stuidio. There really isn't much competition for civ5 honestly, probably the only reason it has been a financial success, well that and the reputation of the franchise.

24 hours have passed since this poll was posted. Civ V gets 12 votes out of 21 who have played all three games. Of the other 2 EU 3 seems to be the best per the poll so far.

Thus, I'm sticking with Civ V as my video game preference with online chess as my main game. However, I will re-read that EU 3 manual from Gamersgate to refresh my memory of that game.

As it stands, EU3 is the superior game in my eyes. The diplomacy (sans ANY AI) is light-years ahead of anything Civilization has done, and the economy of EU3 is also much more diverse and intriguing. That being said, Civ V has far more room for improvement, and if given the proper attention, Civ V can be a much better game than EU3. I do not dislike Civ V, in fact, I really have enjoyed the game and I haven't had to deal with crashes much at all. I just feel that more can be done with the game, and once that potential is capitalized upon, then it will be a fantastic game.

I have only played 2 of these. If the options had been structured to reflect this possibility, I might have been able to cast a vote with some information content,

As it is, I can only vote: haven't played all 3.
