I preferred the music but I don't find the game to be that immersive anyway (nor CivRev for that matter).
Are you going to be on tonight? I'd like to finish the lower-middle series. My week is crazy busy and I'm going to be out of town for the weekend, but I could probably get on for a bit tonight.
good work. those chopper gunners tear it up on ground war. i wish they would add capture the flag to the rotation. have you played any of the new merc mosh pit mode?

I've just started watching the videos. Don't know if you want any more pesky questions, Duke, but I would have sold my galley and a warrior at around the time of 2800 since you were at 60 gold. Instead you made another horse and dropped your gold count. Perhaps there's something I'm missing---I wouldn't be surprised! Maybe you were confident that the horse would push your gold count right back up, or maybe you wnated to keep your units near London. But I've personally had games where the horse gets me a tech and suddenly it takes 10 more turns to get back to 100 gold.
Just a thought!
A couple months back I was thinking, along with others I believe, that the tech battles between early horse/legion rushes and Indust/Univ weren't so important. But after playing more games against top players, and also watching some of Duke's videos over the last few weeks, I sense that that analysis wasn't entirely correct. In games between great players there's usually going to be a lot of fighting, which invariably slows down the race to Oxford (in tourney games you can substitute Leo's or something else), and forces you to pick up incremental advantages. Am I wrong? In this game, for example, Morte and Duke did fight (somewhat) for Irrig. And then Duke mentions at the end of video #2 that he's shooting for Nav to send his HAs over to India.
My thinking now is that if you're playing an average player who doesn't hassle you, but you're unable to win right away, then of course you can expand at will, skip all the techs you like, I win with Bombers in the early ADs. But if you're being hassled by a MawPawk or a Duke, things will play out differently.
I'm assuming you mean the English game vs Morte?
100g wasn't going to get me much that game. I already was a city up on Morte with my cap. Map knowledge was going to be much more critical. Often times it is better to get more units on the map early than to sacrifice the map. Especially against goo players.
Turns out I found some barb huts. This let me vet up a HA and take Madrid. Even if you get a tech, you can often sell it to the AI for some gold.
Great question though. I am curious to hear what other people would have done.
Makes a huge difference with no Oxford. You can't just get bombers and kill the opponents entire attack in 2 turns. Even if you get industrialization, you still have to rush units in multiple cities and army up. No Oxford is definitely a good rule because it makes a mid game rush that much more feasible. And player interaction is always positive.
I've always stood by my strategy with mid level techs - only get them if you can tech it in 2 turns. 3 turns max. This goes for the 50-80 beaker techs.
Nav is worth it only if you think you can slow your opponent down by more turns than it takes you to tech it (and rush a galleon if no bonus). I'm not a fan of settling island cities unless there are some really beafy ones extremely close by. Too many turns are lost searching and whales usually don't pay off unless you settle them in ancient (spanish).
I see your point, and maybe I'll have to rewatch it. Sometimes I'll sell a galley to get to the 100 gold, if I can do it one turn as you could have, and then buy it right back if needed, which you could have done if you wanted to keep sending units to the East. But I guess then you lose a net of 30 gold and maybe your map knowledge is slowed down as you said...
Also, like you, I adjust my strategy against goo players.![]()
There's nobody around here who plays with goo, I can promise you that!
If I'm at 70 gold and my free galley is near a city, I will unload the militia and sell the galley, then buy it back next turn, if I feel like I need it. Putting the new city to work right away is worth the 30 gold. The only way I wouldn't do that is if I weren't fairly secure in my surroundings. No need to give my opponent another target.
goo players love a galley full of sea men
Sorry for the lack of uploading lately. Been super busy with work and midterms this week. I'll get up a civ video this weekend and maybe even a black ops video as well.
maybe a dumb question, but duke ive noticed just from looking at the diplo screen you can tell if your opponent has settled or not early in the game.. what do you look for to know if they have or not?
It's to do with how full the culture icon (mask) is. I can't actually remember off the top of my head, but you can just compare it with your own one. If it's the same, they're in the same situation as you.
If the mask is full, they haven't settled yet. Same with your mask as well. Oddly, when you settle you lose culture. Sort of a paradox. Maybe the settlers realize how fruitless civilization and mankind truly are!
New game up. Older game against Thrasher as I haven't gotten any good games in lately. I'm not sure if the gameplay is good or not, but I remember the game being pretty interactive between the two of us.
Part 1
Part 2
Had a Black Ops vid as well but the audio got muted due to copyright infringement. Crap!
At the time I thought I was playing really poorly (well, the loss of that last horse army was pretty bad), but watching the video, I just didn't have a chance really. Notice I never get my 100 gold. There was nothing over where I was. I got maybe 1-2 barbs at the start and a 3rd one (the one you missed way north) very late. If we'd had anything close to the same number of barbs and huts, I could have made a game out of it, but as things played out I'm surprised I hung in as long as I did.
I don't really get why you don't stand on the Aztec forest while you attack them. Just can't be bothered?
Also, I didn't notice when we were playing the game, but somebody must have built Stonehenge as it isn't available to bank hammers later in the game. Or maybe the AI we never met was China. I don't think I teched Literacy.
I think you maybe have been better off building a few settlers instead of the late horse army. Maybe you didn't have any pop 3 cities. I don't really remember the game that well and I only watched about 5 minutes worth of clips before I uploaded it. I just remember you building a lot of horses. It may not have made a difference as I could probably have out expanded you. I think I only got 1 or 2 barb huts with grass though.
I think we were playing no Oxford. Maybe you could have tried to quick tech Nav and get a few drops on me with archers. That would have been huge, especially with your artist. Obviously you didn't know the map though. I'm not sure if there were any artifacts left.
I'm lazy. I don't think it really mattered though. I did notice that I attacked a city you took from me from a grass tile when I could have just easily moved it to a forest before attacking. Even better, I could have just put an archer there from my galley.

Could have been China. Or maybe Germany built it. They were pop 6 on an island with nothing better to do.

Yeah, really bad horse tactics there. I might have won if those battles had gone the other way, but that would have been quite a feat because my start was way worse than Duke's. I lost the first horse out because I thought Duke was north of me due to having seen a unit of his up there so I didn't expect to find him where I did. Then I lost the others due to not paying attention or something, but I was frustrated with how crappy the game was going so that didn't help. No gold and I grabbed Confucius early because it was near Duke, so I didn't even get any kind of Frenchie bonus.
I wanted to fight back with legions out of that Aztec city we kept exchanging, but that would have been a miracle if it had worked this late in the game. At the time I didn't realize how many barbs Duke had gotten. Obviously that stacks up to a huge advantage when I don't even know where they are.
Starfish Map
Quick vid here showing off the Starfish map in the DLC. I think this could be a viable scenario to run a tournament around.
it would be fun, even though everybody would know the terrain. everybody knows the layout of a chess board also, but the games still come out differently in most cases. there would be some good skirmishing to control those choke points thru the mountain passes. there would be some good early battle tactics, and the ones who lost their HA's would be in big trouble. would the artifacts be up for grabs, or left out. those islands would be prime real estate with coastline at a premium.
The artifacts and islands would be up for grabs. They counter balance the beefy middle. And everyone knows where they are.
I was thinking about saying Russia only as they are the "purest" civ in my opinoin. Aztecs, Arabs, Germany, English, etc could dominate the middle with warriors or archers. Russia makes you earn what you get. Plus the loyal defense could make some interesting longer tactical games. Especially with a lack of water.
I really like any mirror matches except maybe Greeks and English. The map would be too easily choked off when longbows/pikes and make for boring matches I think. Japan, Zulu, Spain might be lame too. Egypt would be random which is kind of against the theme of this whole idea.

Where did you find this map? I dont know if I have it. I think it would be ok for FFA or Teams. Speaking of which I miss the old days of playing FFA with Thrasher, Headless, Madjinn, and sometimes P2M2. Maybe we could try that again or teams as I see Thrasher, Duke, Maw, Zef, and Dan on a lot of the same times. That would be some interesting games for the channel. Especially me in teams so other people could point out what I do wrong for a change.
Any format would be fun I think. I'm not sure what the DLC was called but I know it must be cheap (or free) or I wouldn't have bought it. The map name is Starfish and it gives a description about it being a "dogfight for the strategic center."
Maybe I'll have to make a trip down state so you can record some of your gameplay haha. It would be awesome for one of us to play with the other looking over our shoulder and making suggestions. We would never lose.
Looks like fun!
Having the Atlantis artifact be next to you would be a disadvantage; but otherwise it looks very fair and evenly balanced.
don't be so hard on him thrasher. horses would much rather frolic on plains or grasslands. not those dark, scary woods.
free bump hoping for new videos...
Just put the video online and we'll enjoy it![]()
And yet ANOTHER bump....
Duke, please put some more effort into this!![]()
Ok sorry for the lack of videos. It's a combination of me being busy, lazy, and just not playing much Civ (or xbox at all really).
I think I have a good idea though. However, it would be fairly involved, and time consuming for all of us.
I have a friendly game against Morte from after our tournament. It is a fairly close game that I think could have gone either way. Here's the plan.
1. I upload the pure game play. No commentary. I think it is about 60-90 minutes long.
2. You watch the video and document EVERYTHING you think I should have done differently and why with the time. Ex. Part 1 3:22 - Should have moved warrior NE instead of NW to explore more map.
3. You then post all of your changes on the forums. Not sure if I should use this thread or create a separate thread. Please do not look at others responses before you do this yourself.
4. After maybe a week, I will repost the video with a commentary that addresses all of my mistakes after taking into consideration everyone's responses.
I think this could be a great way for everyone to learn.

That sounds like an excellent use of our valuable time! I'm in. Critiquing your play is even more fun than beating you! Create a new thread.
