Alternate Cover Art (UNOFFICIAL!)

Hello and welcome.

Anyway, there are a considerable (Not everyone I will admit, but enough for me to post this) amount of people who wish to see different cover art of this game. So I though, "Why not give you guys a shot at making one?"

A few things first:

1. This is NOT Official or recognised by 2K Games. Just because your entry is here, it does not mean they will change it to that or anything else.

2. Descriptions and pictures are allowed, but try to be discreet and not overflow the fourm with them.

3. No trolling. I've seen the unproductive mocking pictures of the original cover, I don't want that here.

4 Normal rules apply.

That's about it. Go nuts.

I so zealously want them to wake up about this issue, I got in trouble here because I described how bad the situation really is in my mind.

Currently, the most popular cover idea posted over at Gearbox is one of the new designs from 2K and Gearbox...

Can't we have the new Duke in a better light? This really is a mistake.

Is anyone old enough to remember the backlash that resulted from this?:

I don't hate the artist, or the new young Duke - It's a new style, it's acceptable, and made to be edgy for a reason. I can see how this mistake was made. Along the way nobody at 2K really thought about current box design in terms of a negative first impression from Duke looking like a gangster wannabe.

I think 2K doesn't care if the look embarasses us old timers, but they do care about sales.

I keep thinking it's some kind of inappropriate joke - like something your brother-in-law does to you at a wedding. But it seems to be 100% the direction they are determined to go.

While I don't like the cover, you're blowing it out of proportion if you think its the second coming of Daikatana and its unlimited amount of bad press and internal drama.

My post from the other thead on what I feel are the main problems and how they could be fixed:

1: Sort out the background angle so that Duke is standing up, rather then the weired laying down mess we have.

2: Make the background a different color then pink, so we can make it out better.

3: Make Duke's head stand up rather then tilted and give him a look of awesome or anger rather then the weired smile thing we have.

4: Make Duke's gun held normaly and pointed at the camera. They can still make the groin joke like that if they wish.

Also, feel free to post possible fixes for the existing cover as well as new ones.

It's obviously not the second coming of Daikatana - that game actually sucked.

I was referring to the reaction to that particular poster art - just one poster blew up all over the place and made a horrible mess of everything - for years Romero was answering to (appologizing about) that poster.

Here we have tea bagging gangster Duke looking down at you with his crotch in your face, and his head cocked over. As far as the message it sends, it's even more bold-faced and obnoxious -

I don't know if it will cause a similar blow-up in the gamer world, but it will hurt sales simply because he looks like a punk gangster wannabe. That's just a fact.

Some of us want to really smack that cover art punk around, it's not the kind of emotions you want to bring about unless you're promoting GTA.

I would pay attention to this thread, they have some really well done fan covers, Im surprised the creators of the cover haven't posted them here, updated cover 6 is my favorite.

I really like some of the designs here, particularly these three:

However, I've been thinking about it, and while I think these would make excellent covers for the Collector's Edition, I have to agree that they don't quite convey the over the top tone that Duke Nukem has.

I know who Duke is, and you know who Duke is, so these covers tell us everything we need to know, but imagine you're someone who has no experience with the franchise whatsoever. To the uninitiated, these covers look much more like your typical muscle man third person shooters and don't get across the idea that this is game as over the top Duke Nukem is. In that regard, I think the official cover succeeds more than than these. Don't get me wrong, the official design is still pretty terrible, but it paints a much more obvious picture of what the game will be like (even if it does makes you want to punch Duke square in that cuss-eating grin of his).

People that are gonna go to buy games dont just go there and pick a random game, they are gonna do research before buying, like trailers and reviews and so on.

I say let the trailer do it's work of "over the top" but dont ruin the cover.

and you know what it is over the top, He is holding two weapons that are clearly double handed, there is a nuclear cloud behind him that no normal human being would survive, and he is shooting a hole through an aliens head. AND most importantly the angle is not confusing.
THAT is over the top badassery, maintaining respect for the character, and the fanbase.

I completely agree that the cover needs a redo to have something more visually appealing and more in line with the visual style of Duke Nukem, but what I'm saying is in terms of tone the cover is pretty close to what it needs to be.

As for the original Duke Nukem 3D cover, it was the perfect cover for that era. It stood out and was more over the top than anything else on the shelf. Now, however, you have to take into account that Duke Nukem is going to be sitting on a shelf next to scuba divers with 4 ft drills on their arms and muscle men wielding guns with chainsaw bayonets, so a cover like Duke 3D's is just going to blend into the crowd for people who aren't already familiar with the character. That's why the cover has a larger emphasis on the sex innuendos, because it stands out. The problem, though, is that the composition is poorly designed and the way Duke is drawn makes him look like a punk.

The cover needs to strike a balance between the two, it can't lean too heavily on the badass action side or it'll just look like your standard Gears of War knockoff, but it also can't lean too heavily on the sex side of things or it'll look like Leisure Suit Larry with Guns; it needs to do what the trailer and (hopefully) the game does by riding that line right between the two.

It shows Duke in the main focus, looking awesome with his pistol and Car-Key detonator. Everything around him gives a representation of other things in the game. Like the Mighty Foot driving sections, the glitzy Las Vegas levels, the Cycloid boss in level 1, etc.

It just feels so right.

I think that's where the true humour in duke always lied in, mimic old movies but still managing a sense of originality always made me laugh in a good way, I still respect it because it looks bad ass but by the cover it seems like Im about to have a great time.

It's not offensive to the fans or confusing and over all a great sense of quality.

But the in-game is about as good as any illustrator can pull off - Duke looks great in-game.

It's a great cover, I certainly love it, This one will do.

If 2K isn't gonna change it completely There are just minor Issues that can be fixed with Photoshop Like his face and the color in the background, If anything the UK version looks better.

The Whole idea is , DUKE NUKEM is a photoshop , it's not the ingame model.

Did this because I had some spare time today, although my knowledge with PainShop is close to nothing.



However I do support the official cover or the McMaster creation that has the ingame model personally. The girl in the image is Kelly Brook . With Kelly Brooke in this image, I dont think my work should be used for any commercial purposes, but just treated as a simple fun creation in spare time, and may be some idea can be obtained by more professional artist may be to create a more Pro cover for the Special/Collector's Edition.
