Can't get past Steam

I am a new user - didn't look at Civilization5 closely enough when I bought it and have been sent on a wild goose chase..

I cannot get past the update, stops working at ~ 16%.

I have:
turned firewall off
retried many times
reinstaled stream

I am using:
Vista
Firefox

Retailer won't refund. Please help

This update is for Steam or the game itself?

I don't think Firefox would be part of the issue.

And it does sound like Steam.

Do you have UAC disabled or enabled?

Does your anti-virus have a firewall or do you have another firewall program? Sometimes the anti-virus firewall blocks downloads like this as well.

Have you uninstalled all the way, rebooted your system, and tried installing again and then another reboot? If you have to attempt this multiple times then it's not the install. After doing it twice call it a good install and move on from there.

Whats your current vista build (i.e. is it fully caught up on updates)?

Is your internet DSL? My buddy has issues with steam and his DSL connection, he usally brings his laptop over and downloads off of steam. Everything else for him works good though through steam.

Whats your available HDD space? Or if your that fancy, your SSD. If you are running anywhere near 25% available call it full drive, and either get another HDD for all the stuff you got on your current one or look at upgrading. You can install games and the like on other HDD's as well, beside the HDD holding your OS. usually not always the best thing to do as now you have to make sure if that HDD isn't internal that's connected and turned on all the time.

Other than that, my steam assistance for you doesn't go any further...Not too big on steam and don't know much about it to fully assist other than standard system stuff when it comes to steam.

Did you buy a disk? if so there's an easy fix described on the Steam site.

He's trying to get the first update for the game. But yeah, it's worth a shot.
