Maybe they're all working on the Facebook version?

Yeah, Civ 5's definitely been put on the back burner. It's all about money and there is a lot of money to be made with Facebook apps thru advertising and additional content. At least it would be a stable version of the game though!

this sort of thing really pisses me off. It's just like with Spore. Screw the actual game, just make a bunch of crappy spin-offs!!!

Forget that the Facebook version will be a joke compared to actual videogames, what about us that paid 40-60$ for Civ 5? Shouldn't we get ours?

Are you sure about that, Panda???

Considering how "stable" Civ V has been since release, can you honesty expect a derivative game to be more stable???

Never seen that happen, and I've been around computer games since 1969: mainframe all the way down to late 1970 game machines.

Sadly, I doubt that we will "get ours", unless "getting ours" means getting the shaft from 2k/Firaxis.

The only recourse I can imagine is pointing every doggoned game-review site out there to the posts here on the 2K CIV V support forum. Maybe if enough of us do that, 2K/Firaxis just might pay attention and put resources into fixing CIV V instead of making a Facebook Civ game?

Wry grin too; wondering if The Powers That Be(TM) will block my posts (or delete this one) once they read this one. I've had that happen before on other game forums when I've called'em on their lack of concern, care, and support for us who've paid good solid $$ for their games by publishing the problems to game review forums.

So... if'n you don't see me around anymore, all y'all will know why.

You're a brave man, Charlie Brown.

Question: How do you find enough time to post here AND tape your show, Mr. Chapman?

What would this even do? Any game (and tech for that matter) journalist, KNOWS, that the support forum for a title, is not a valid representation, of that title, in any direction.

I guess corporate attitude towards games is different (even when it's their own product) than the corporate attitude is towards enterprise software - or for that matter, open-source software.

Developers, managers, QE/QA staff at Bellcore (now Lucent), IBM, Oracle, and Sun (R.I.P.) - all of whom I have worked for - sure payed attention to their support forums, and acted on what they read once a bug was reported more than twice. Yes, TWICE. Twice resulted in investigation. THREE times resulted in QE/QA, developers, and management setting up the same environment as the people who reported the bug(s), replicating the bugs (successfully in most cases), and FIXING THE BUGS when it was a bug that occurred more than 10% of the time. FWIW, those four companies did not follow the 80%/20% rule. Three times - but, after all, that is/was for enterprise software, not lowly games.

Maybe as a (retired) IT professional (started back in 1969), I'm expecting too much of the game industry, eh? After all, games aren't critical to the economy, ya know.

Heh, methinks you might have hit the nail on the head though with "Any game (and tech for that matter) journalist" (journalist being the keyword here) "KNOWS, that the support forum for a title, is not a valid representation, of that title, in any direction."

Yup. GAME verus enterprise software. The San Jose Mercury news absolutely loves crucifying IBM, Oracle, HP, Sun, etc. when a problem is reported on the support forums that is NOT fixed yesterday or properly or... etc.

You're absolutely right; game support forums are ignored. I came to the conclusion years ago that they exist only to pacify dissatisfied costumers by giving the appearance that the company "cares." Optimist that I am, I keep hoping and trying, hoping that someday some game company will really pay attention to their forums and listen to their customers - who, by and far, are not the dumb sheeple game companies think we are.

Still, there are enough tech-types in the various game-review forums that, should enough email/pointers/blog responses, etc. be submitted that they take note, and there's enough pure-tech forums such as Cnet, TechRepublic, ZDnet, PCStats, etc. that may take note as well -plus there's all of those gaming mags out there; swing by any grocery store magazine rack who also might take note -

Provided enough of us who are dissatisfied write to them about it.

What's that old worn-out but true cliche? Them as remains silent are part of the problem.

"We" (the ones who've been working on documenting, debuging, etc.) the bugs since early October and who have received (as shown by the various threads here) what appears to be canned responsese - well, "we" won't know the truth of what you've aptly noted unless we try, eh?

Me, I'm not giving up regardless of what the status quo perceives. After all, after a while, a mosquito IS noticed. Heh, mebbe I'll get smacked down like that proverbial mosquito - however, there's a lot more (potential) mosquitos out there - if they'll only act.

History is full of examples where us "mosquitos" went against the status quo - and got things changed for the better.

I think a tiny part of the world's population play the full Civ game, but once it hits Facebook it will then attract all the soccer moms and the huge, global Internet population that love apps like Farmville etc. They will be a very loud voice if they screw the app up as much as the PC game and there's no way 2K or Firaxis will just be able to ignore them.

    Yep.

I wonder though; I strongly doubt that the standalone CIV V engine will be used beneath the cover on Facebook simply because it takes too long to load (one can hope though, eh?) and it doesn't use the Facebook API (as noted below). Instead, they'll probably go with the engine that lies beneath Farmville, etc.

I also doubt that the full complexity of CIV V will be ported (various ways of "winning", slotting specialists in cities to specialize the cities, etc.), or that the huge world/marathon play will be ported.

In other words, all of the bugs and problems that us standalone users have noted simply will not exist in the Facebook version because the software that causes that problem very likely is not being ported to Facebook.

Facebook has its own API and requirements to which every app has to conform - and the standalone CIV V simply does not support or use those interfaces.

So, I doubt there will be a large outcry at all on Facebook vis a vis Civ.

    Oh well. Time will tell.

Laughing; we have the same interest and attitude vis a vis computers

's far as a capable ally, judging by your photo, you got yourself a two-way

However, it may take me a while to getcher back for you; ever since the TSA started their free medical exams, I've refused to fly. I got me a decent little S10 that gets danged good mileage; and besides, Sea-Tac is about 120 miles north of me

You're on, brother: I'll bore the dog squeeze out of 'em with a treatise on how best to apply thermal paste to a CPU when seating an aftermarket heatsink, until your arrival.

    ROTFLMAO!

yeah, that's not my pic. that's a french philosopher, Michel Foucault (I don't necessarily ascribe to his views).
I just like the pic. don't know why.

If you want to get your $ 50 worth of struggle with the Civ V AI, download the following save game, move it to your Single Player save game folder under \My Games, load it and bury yourself in a real war:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?zt1zqdpcwd2o35r

    Its crash proof as well.
