Was a Steam Supporter until I saw the horrid update

Thank you 2K and Steam for making me redownload my entire ☺☺☺☺ing game just for a bug fix.

5 Gee Bees of downloading before I can play again. It's winter break and I just wanted to play but no, for some reason, some minor game tweaks led to me having to redownload the whole game. ☺☺☺☺ you!

Try rebooting steam? People sometimes get a weird 'redownload entire game' bug which is jsut that, a bug.

Though since you didn't know that... are you blaming Valve for a patch that 2k Games distributed? Weird.

In any case, I don't remember how big the last update was. I think it was fairly sizable, in which case you would've had quite the wait regardless. I could be wrong.

Anyway, right-click Civ V, Properties, Updates, change the automatic update settings. Restart Steam because some settings Steam will only save to your next computer reboot if Steam shuts down properly, and Windows isn't configured to shut down Steam properly on shutdown.

The whole game is 5 GB. I don't think a small update should be any bigger than 1, or 2 GB. I am currently downloading a 5.6 GB file.

The ☺☺☺☺ed up! And I restarted steam and it's still downloading, it's at 2%. I'm not going to slow down my internet for 4 hours to play. I'll just have to leave my computer on over night, generating a lot of heat in my room, so I can play tomorrow. Thanks 2K.

Up here, we use overnight computers as a good way to need less blankets durign a cold winter night. Bonus points if you're on a laptop and put the power cord brick in your sheets.

    Anyway.

I checked on the Steam forums (next time try asking there, less aggressively, on the help section; they have a pretty helpful group of people there) and I suggest the following:

Stop the update. Validate game files for Civ V.

This usually, apparently, fixes the bug and will reorient Steam to only download the necessary files.

If it doesn't... well, it still needs to redownload the whole game, so no time lost

I thought it was pretty frigging clear that he blames Valve for forcing him to re-download the entire shebang.

Steam sometimes decides to redownload a whole game for an update. I have no idea why. However, quitting Steam often make it think again and only download what's necessary. None of the updates have generally made everyone download the whole game again.

If, however, you've altered a load of the files in some way, it will download the official versions of those. That's one possibility I can think of...

If that is the case then your pc and internet connection sucks.

My favorite button in Steam is:

    "Verify Integrity Of Game Cache"

Why? Because Steam makes it so.

Of course the "play" button is also nice, but still, nothing makes me feel more 'complete' than to checking the integrity of the game cache.

    -.-

*edit* Sorry aeligos. I didn't mean to nock what you said. What I ment is why do I need to verify a game? I played so many games that I never needed to verify a game once installed. I just find this a very weak excuse for something that shouldn't need to be done in the first place.

"Play" is all we should have to worry about, we shouldn't have to worry about anything else. For me, I feel lied to from 2K saying that Steam would make my "patching" experiance easier, where in fact it is the opposite. Steam hasn't added anything to me yet.

I don't think I will ever buy a PC game that will be "Steam enabled only play". If buying a game on Steam, then I can understand using Steam to play the game. I buy my game at EB Games, I shoudn't need Steam to play Civ V.

Not sure where the apology is warranted.

With me, no apology is ever needed. I just don't get upset or take things personally. Why decide to do that to me-shelf?

So whatever it is that you had up before the 'edit' it matters not.

But... what I failed to mention before was that I have a "verify integrity" fetish.

I should have made that clear.

    oops.

Look, 2K/Firaxis made a business decision to go with Steam. It is a done deal and will not be changed. If you hate Steam so much, why don't you go complain at Valve/Steam? What do you want 2K/Firaxis to do about it? All these endless complaining and whining of Steam is not getting anywhere, except becoming spam full of repeating same thing over and over for the millionth time.

Hate Steam so much? Don't play Civ V and use that extra time for something else to give you more enjoyment or productivity in life.

Then play on a console if you only want to worry about "play".

    Steam is without emotion.

    Emotion is a human trait.

So to be with Steam, means that we also need to be without emotion.

    Peace through submission.

    Steam wills it.

Nah, some people just whine about everything.
The only think about their own and don't care about the rest.
And I'm trying to push them in the right direction.

How ironic, we don't care about the rest? We can say some people don't care about what we like or prefer. So just because we don't agree with you, we are wrong? So what is the right direction then?

We have been over this a few times in various other threads. I dont know what causes the issue (cruddy coding I presume). When I had the issue I was able to delete the game and reinstall it from the disc. Obviously not an option if you dont have the physical media.

Sorry Peets, but I don't "whine about everything".

I dont have a bad internet connection. I can get 2.0 MB/s (and have before) with steam. However it is the winter holiday and they have many deals, so there servers are not operating very quickly.

Second of all, my queston is, if I redownload the whole game if the game is already on my computer, isn't that cause for concern or wonder? I am wasting time and bandwidth for something unnecessary. I have used steam many times before for team fortress 2 and other games and it never did this to me.

Thank you to other people who were trying to help. I do not know why it did this and I validated my game files and it still did not help. Oh well. I will just leave my PC on overnight.

But leaving your PC on overnight, you are not playing the game then. Hmmm... Download patch and not play is not what I want. I may not want to even download the next patch because I don't want to redownload the whole game again.

You should know if you buy a PC and play games on it that there can be problems. And asking that everything should work by just clicking "play" is just playing on the wrong machine. If you disagree with this then you have no clue how the PC business works and then you are being selfish cause you only think about your own world.

My download was still 1 MB/sec during the holiday and my brother had the same. Still, always crying that it is someone else fault before you try something is a wrong attitude. If you had asked it more polite then there would be no problem.

    You can turn it off...

Peets, it sounds like to me that you're just mad for no reason. I have legitimate complaints about the game, that should not happen, and all you want to say is "ITS YOUR FAULT ANYWAY YOU STUPID".

Honestly you're not really helping at all. In fact, you're only making things worse. I got my game redownloaded, even though it shouldn't have had to have been. The fact of the matter was that my download went up to 700 kb/s over the night time because less people were downloading. I don't care what 'your experience' was. That's not my experience.

You could kindly ☺☺☺☺ off for all I care, but I won't be reading this anymore so I won't know.

I am being selfish? Isn't 2K/Firaxis being selfish for releasing the game too early? Now who is selfish, me wanting a finished product or a company releasing a game early and taking our money for a game that is not complete? Even people who love Civ V say the game is only 90% complete. Why can't I have a game that I paid for be 100% complete?

I am not being selfish. All this means, is I expect a game to be 100% while you expect a game to be 75% finished on release. I guess if the game was only 1% complete then maybe you will be upset.

So when do I not become selfish? When the game is 90% complete? 85% complete? 50% complete like Elemental?

Wanting a game finished or a game that you only need to push "play" is a big difference.
It's like comparing apples with bananas. They are both fruit but not the same fruit.

This game is indeed not finished and the reason is not them being selfish but our fault again.
We are destroying the economy so they have to release it sooner.
But that is an entire other discussion that most people won't understand due to them thinking in their own little box.

They made consoles so that you can just put the cd in and play.
If you play on a PC then you should be aware that not everything will work from start on due to the many different systems.
Again, if you do not understand that then come out the little box.
