    Minecraft

I know you play it. I finally gave in and started playing it today...

I lost four hours of my life searching for coal, of all things, so that I could make torches to build my mine and stay away from the creeper hordes.

What about you guys? What's your favorite adventure/current adventure in minecraft?

It's not your standard type of game. If you're in to having a world in which you can build/make anything... then yes, it's well good.

Oh, okay. I guess I might try it out. But once I've beaten all the games I'm playing currently.

I don't think there is a "winning" condition for minecraft. You simply make stuff and survive, I believe.

I can do that with Unreal Editor, SourceSDK, Starcraft Map Editor, etc.

You would be right in thinking that, its just basically a never ending world, the width of the world anyway, I think there is some limitation on the height, surviving isn't essential as you will just respawn, though it can sometimes be a pain trying to find where you were killed to try and get your stuff back based on how big the world is.

If people are put off by the graphics of it, consider this, its only in alpha build at the moment and if you buy now, can't remember the price at the moment but its fairly low you get all future updates to the game for free.

I bought it a few months back. I finally got back into it. It's a great game to just pass time and collect things...just to build things, haha.

It's also fun to just wander around and find a new place to either make a house or dig a new mine.

    Yes, it's quite the time-killer.

And no, it's not like using the various game editors. You have to work to get the materials that you build with. And one material leads to another, which leads to another, and so on. The "game" aspect is half about the building and half about acquiring the resources you need.

My first world was going pretty well. My house was built into a cliff face, with a big glass bubble around two sides so I could walk out and look at all the skeery monsters. LOL. I was delving WAY down deep (lots of magma) and had just started mining diamonds and red dust. Then I got killed by a lava flow. And I couldn't find my way back down into the labyrinth in time so I lost a ton of stuff I was carrying.

Now I keep less on my person. And I mark my trails better. Started a second world and built a tower so I could climb way above the world and see everything. Kinda nifty. Not a lot of good minerals in this one, though. Still having trouble finding metal ore.

I just started playing, and I have a house made mostly of glass, I have a giant tower made of glass as well, and I have a giant blue stick figure holding hands with a giant red stick figure. It took some time...

It does, but you see what I meant by the fact that you totally lose yourself in it? It's an addicting game.

I might get into it... how much does it cost, and does it have a monthly fee? I've seen Syndicate's live commentaries of the game and it looks fairly fun.

There is no monthly fee and you might want to check out Minecraft.net for purchase options.

I'll wait a little while to get it, but I'll definitely get a copy.

That'll be swell, because this weekend I'm getting a new hard drive that I can fit it on!

Thought this was funny: on the COD forums, people were talking about the features on the new zombies map- one of which was a minecart. However, in one thread everyone kept calling the cart a minecraft. LOL.

You can see Minecraft re-creations of COD zombies maps on Youtube, complete with zombies.

I saw that on Syndicate's channel. His live commentaries and the Zombies maps are what made me want to try it out.

I a few days I'll go out and buy a new hard drive, and then downloading new games won't be such a pain anymore- because if I tried to download Minecraft right now, 1's and 0's would begin to ooze out of the cracks in my keyboard.

I watched the zero punctuation review of minecraft and just got a copy of it from a friend on his memory stick so I plan to set it up soon the first thing I want to build is a GIANT. GOLDEN. ☺☺☺☺. AND. BALLS. but hey maybe thats just me. As for the rapture pack I doubt I would get it as I would rather make my own which I'm planning to do.

Got it a few months back and I do NOT regret it. It's insanely addictive, strangely innovaive and downright fun! I've lost a good few hours of my life to this game, and I'm terrible at building anything, it just goes to show how great it really is.

True that. I've wasted a fair chunk of my life playing this game, it's an amazing alternative compared to what games have become today. The 16-bit graphics and complete open world immersed me from day 1. I'm not awful at building things, but I lack inspiration and usually end up ripping off of others.

After watching several YouTube videos and seeing my increase in spare cash since I started selling stuff online, I've decided to buy Minecraft- probably tomorrow. But, I have two questions:

One, can you play offline in your own world, and build whatever you want, uninterrupted?

Two, can someone post a link to the real website? I need to know I'm not being ripped off.

One thing I've really wanted to do is build an underwater house in the game- a two story, maybe. I would mine underwater for supplies, building little cells here and there to catch my breath in.

I actually have an underwater house. Actually more of a skyscraper. First, I built it. Then made a door, and then got a ☺☺☺☺ ton of buckets and started getting rid of the water inside.

That was my plan. Glad it's possible! I'll probably get the game in an hour or so.

It's actually not that hard. The hardest part was deciding what to make it out of. I decided to make it out of glass, which looked pretty cool. Plus it looks even better with a texture pack that makes glass clearer.

I just read this on Notch's blog:

"Fear is one of the easiest emotions to evoke, but doing so in a way that doesn’t frustrate or fatigue the player is more difficult. I find this fascinating. What parts of fear are fun, and what parts aren’t fun?

One of the biggest game design decisions in Minecraft is that all (well, most) negative things that affect the world or the player should happen near the player, and be clear to the player. That’s why creepers only explode near players, and that’s why fires stopped spreading indefinitely. This is somewhat related to my dislike of mazes in game design, where the player has no way of knowing or figuring out before hand what decision is the correct decision. Don’t penalize the player for things they can’t control.

Last weekend, I started working on a new mob because I was frustrated with the slow progress on some town code I was writing, and for some reason I decided to make yet another creepy one. It’s dark, it has long and narrow limbs, moves very slowly, and will pick up blocks and move them around. I wanted this to be a mob you only saw in the distance and a mob you’d be afraid of, but when I playtested it, it mostly felt like a regular zombie. There’s was a distinct mismatch between looking creepy and not actually playing creepy. When I made it move faster towards the player when attacking, and deal more damage, it got more difficult and I started respecting it, but it never felt creepy or scary.

So I thought some about what “creepy” actually is, and it’s more about trying to avoid something from happening than it is about actually having that thing happen. If you know something bad can happen if you do the wrong thing, you will start thinking about your actions, and that might make things more scary.

So I made it passive until you looked straight at it. And that was scary. Suddenly you could walk up to these looking beasts (they’re three meters tall) and watch them as they moved their blocks around, but as soon as you happened to look straight at them, they’d attack. And by “straight at them”, I mean putting the reticle on top of them. You can keep them visible on screen and actually look straight at them in real life, but as soon as your in game character looks straight at them, boom.

Still, that was more scary than creepy. It’s like a jump scare in a movie. You know it might happen at any time, and when it happens you freak out a bit. I wanted something a bit more psychological. So to really drive home the point of looking at them being bad, I made the Endermen freeze and turn towards you when you look at them. As long as you look straight at them, they stand perfectly still and look straight at you. As soon as you look away, they will run (very fast) towards you.

And they teleport. If they’re too far away to reach you in a short period of time, they will teleport about once per second. They try to make sure they always teleport to somewhere you can see, as I don’t want to confuse the player as to what is happening.

When they attack, you know it’s your fault. When you happen to look at one, you can keep looking at it to figure out how to deal with it, but you know it WILL reach you very fast once you stop looking at it.

And that, my friends, is creepy. Possibly too creepy"

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS UPDATE!!!!
