Changing the setting to "SkipIntroVideo = 1" does skip the intro, there is a bit of a lag but fine otherwise.

I had a similar problem found the program conflicted with Spyware Doctor, just wouldn't load.
Disabled SD and all was well until late game crashes.

Not a solution.
I have the same issue, game freezes then exits to desktop. Always well into the game, huge map, domination only win condition. Some recoverable crashes prior to 70 cities, at 70...
