I missed the fact that you can take research photographs of Little Sisters and gain bonuses from them. I'd just assumed since they're 'non-combatants' you couldn't research them.

I found it quite tough till, as other people have already pointed out, you get hold of the Research Camera then you can start photographing everything and really racking up the extra damage bonuses....
