One of the greatest things that Mafia 1 had, thou it had a lot of great things, was the weapons, all perfectly balanced and quite realistic, yeah there were some anachronisms such as the .357 revolver in early 30's missions, but those were negible.
Overall, the best handgun was the M1911 .45 caliber pistol, it was accurate, powerful enough and a faster shooter than any of the revolvers. The best 2 handed gun was, obviously, the Thompson M1928, it behaved like a full auto version of the M1911 sharing the same accuracy and power, and adding to that a 50 round magazine and full auto capability. Following that was the Mosin-Nagant M1981/30 PU sniper rifle, that despite some flaws like no one shot kill on non vital parts (you really had to aim for the head), in Mafia it behaved quite realistically for a non-WWII shooter game, in fact it even had some ballistic effects such as bullet drop and windage. The best melee, for me, was the knife, I just loved the slashing combo that Tommy performed, followed by the bat and fists. The Walther PPK is chambered for .25 ACP, .32 ACP, .380 ACP, .22lr, but the most prolific were the .32 and .380 ones. It was meant for self-defence and police use in where they rather wound the assailant or criminal instead of killing him. Last edited by Argen_EsB : 01-30-2010 at 01:17 PM. |

). And I agree, even when you shot people in the head with that gun, you had to hit them at least 4+ times before they died. I only used it when I ran out of ammo for everything else and even then I only killed one or two people with it. |

EDIT: Revolvers always lose some of the pressure because some of the gases escape from the gap between the cylinder and the barrel's breech leading to a lower muzzle velocity than a pistol of the same caliber and barrel length. Also, in the first issued Mafia II screenshots, we can see a M3 grease-gun, a MP-40 submachinegun and a MG-42 machinegun (we saw it in action for the liqueur brewery mission in one of the gameplay videos), so it means that european weapons were either smuggled in or legally to sold America during and after WWII. Who knows, maybe we will see some rare, foreign weapons in Mafia II. Example of rare weapons is the chromed Colt M1911 with a extended clip that they use in the gameplay video in where Joe and Vitto infiltrate on that building disguised as maintenaince employees. Gagsters where well known for modifying the cars and weapons. Example: the shortened BARs used by Bonnie & Clide.

For instance of generic and too mandatory weapons upgrades is STALKER: Clear Sky. I love the STALKER series, but I hate the equipment upgrading system that Clear Sky has, it's just that the normal, unmodified guns and armor weren't even half decent in comparison as how they behaved in Shadow of Chernoby. In Clear Sky, you have, no you MUST HAVE to upgrade your guns and armor in order to make a difference. I preferred the Shadow of Chernobyl system in where all the weapons and armor of the same type performed equally and only depended on their actual condition (how worn they are), but there where some special, unique versions of them that were hard to find or in the hand of another stalkers.
If they are going to implement an upgrade system it should be based on real life upgrades. Medal of Honor: Airborne had realistic wise upgrades for all our weapons. Last edited by Argen_EsB : 01-31-2010 at 02:17 PM. |

Personally, I hate weapon upgrades. Why not just make a separate weapon? The only upgrades I like are sawed off for shotguns. I think upgrades ruined COD WAW and are unorthodox for the mafia.
