How can I win a tech victory?

I've been having a bunch of issues with winning a tech victory. I usually during the whole game dedicate 90% of my cities to research, usually 100% later on, and I end up producing around 1000 research, but around the time of space flight, the game ends, and I can't get to Alpha Centauri.

Any ideas or strategies? I usually have 10 cities, all producing nearly 100 research each near the end.

Im on the Xbox 360. I have no idea what to do. If I devote all my resources to science, and I run out of time, how is it possible?

Only 100 research per city? With two tech cities I Can have 500 science a peice. You need a university and courthouse in each city. Then you need to have all workers on all trade spaces all on tech.

i don't get universitys in every city, just ones that will give an equitable benefit for the hammers. or if i'm still in a neck and neck tech race. i started like you, never quite up on tech. i printed and followed the strat i will link here and got to space a little after 1900. since then i have been able to have similar results with other tech civs.

With 1.30, once you hit the modern era, you can devote all your resource to tech (or gold if you choose). Maybe the cities you settle are too far inland or lack desert so there's not enough science. You aren't playing Mongols are you?

city placement is important. you especially want at least 1 city that you will only use for science and growing pop. in that city have the maximum sea squares. a 2 square island with a resource to aid production or food can be good too. whale, fish, and dye all add to the mix. if its early settle a scientist there to boost beakers. if you get a builder look at what wonders will aid science like the 1 that gives plus 1 trade from sea squares. if you do use a builder don't waste any production the city currently has banked. use it on something.

Good tips from everyone here, and I would add--don't neglect technology even early in the game. If you are dedicating too many workers to building settlers and defenses and growing your cities, try buying technology from the AI to keep up. Early on, it can be better to spend gold you get from barbarians on defenses and use your workers for trade rather than production.
