Thread: I miss replay (after you win game).

I miss replay (after you win game).

It may seem trivial, but I really miss the replay feature after you win a game. I like to watch how all the civilizations develop and sometimes see civilizations get conquered I never met.

Just finished my 3rd single player game and really noticed that. That and Ending videos. Need small reward for winning long civ games.

(loved civ4, so far love civ5... but please "fix" multiplayer)

I've had some success decoding the replay files that are created for completed games, check it out - I could use some feedback seeing as it's all based on guesswork:

I completely agree.....That was a nice touch I'd like to see brought back somehow.

Another sacrifice on the soulless Altar of Streamlining!

Finishing the game is almost more 'meh' than playing it to that point .. You won .. Main menu.
Serious lack of atmosphere throughout, 'tis a lifeless thing. Pretty though

Edit: Odd that they have the game create the replay files and then don't use them. Wonder if it was cut prior to release.

count me in as one who would like to see this return in a future patch.

Likewise, it was pretty fun seeing how you compared to the rest of the Civs and what they were up to before you explored the whole map. Especially on larger maps. Totally miss this feature.

I think the feature wasn't finished, there are all sorts of oddities in those files. If you look at the HTML replays my script creates from the replay files (see link in my above post) you'll see what I mean, and those are after some educated guesses that it makes in an effort to make sense.

I was looking for the music folder to change some of the songs, and I could have sworn I saw PBEM, Hotseat, Religion, & Replays, including other folders/files there are not in the game???

If they patch that in at a later time, that's ok with me, but if they try to sell that in an expansion, NO THANKS!

I also miss those replays. I was disappointed after playing a 750 turns game full of wars and conquests and not being able to see how my game evolved. Please return this feature into the game.

    And fix multiplayer animations

This is my single biggest gripe along with the rest of the missing data and power graphs.

Most liekly as in any project there came the time to say...these are our resources and this is what we want to do....
Taking into account that some people got layed off a few monts ago I think you can assume that CIV5 was running out of budget. I would buy an expansion pack if it would mean they could keep the development team and add already "planned" ideas

It is a shame that the replay doesn't exist anymore. I would always watch it after a game. I thought it was a really nice touch.
Perhaps this is another example of how little input Sid really had with this game.

I'm all for innovation and bringing new life to something but I also think it's important to maintain a connection as well.
The replay was a minor addition but all those tiny pieces create greatness.
If it was not included because the devs thought it passe then shame on them. If there was a time crunch as it was either get the game out on the 21 or wait and finish polishing the replay then no problem.

Totally agree. The replays and (more so imo) the graphs need to come back.

It was likely not included because it's not completed and not everything is working. The game does create replay files and I've managed to watch them and display a power graph, please refer to the second post in this thread for a link. You'll see all sorts of errors and inconsistencies in the replay files. I think the feature will eventually come back but has not made it in time for release.

Watching the replay in Strategic View would be awesome, it's crying out to be used like that. You could set different filters and watch it from several points of view, political, military, economic...

I wonder how detailed the replay files are?

Not very. They contain basic information on when tiles switched ownership, and textual descriptions of when stuff happened ("A declared war on B" etc.), also data for histograms (e.g. score on each turn).

Here's an example of what can be extracted from them, as far as I can tell (no IE, sorry):

I am also missing this summary in form of a timelapse/replay. Gave me some more motivation to complete the game.

@dannythefool Good work so far! Gives some hope at least.

I like the game and have played through many times... I would also love to see more of a post-game summary. It would be nice to see where I went wrong in the unlikely event I fail... which happens just about every other game at the higher difficulties lol.

    Bring back replay.

(and diplomacy, and religion, and transports, and wonder videos, and ...)

  22. #22
I was seriously disappointed upon winning my first game. No replay, nothing fun or informative happened.

Bring back the goddamned replay or something like it. I started to type up an argument in its favor, but you know, that's pointless. We can reasonably assume the "post-game summary" (to use another poster's apt phrase) was left out purely because of time and money crunch.

There's alot wrong with this game as it stands. I have not been afflicted with the "one... more... turn" syndrome, yet. I was really excited about the release -- so much so that I uninstalled Civ 4. Kudos on what you got right, and apologies for the vagueness, but this lack of replay just struck me as "unfinished."

I think Replay will be patched in at a later date.

I think it was left out, just like hotseat multiplayer mode was left out just to meet the release date.

I miss the charts and graphs showing where you stood at every point in time compared to the other civs in Money, power, score, etc.

But then again, I am a charts and graphs kind of guy

I too will express my dissatisfaction at the absence of the Replay, graphs etc. I always used to watch the replay to see how other civs developed then laugh heartily as my civ spread like a plague over the entire map!

Plus i want a palace feature and different winning cinematics and... ah, i'll keep dreaming

  25. #25
Yeah man, after playing for 10+ hours, you can't just have a 'You Win!' screen. It's an epic game, it's got to have an epic end.

And yeah, I could dig a palace as well.

100% agree! In fact I often resigned after every play session to just see the progress of the game from a birds eye view and see my progression. Loved that feature!

I'll add my vote to this petition!
    And bring back ending animations!
Fix the subtitles when a new age is achieved! (I don't know who you're quoting Mr Narrator!)

I guess the site admins decided that you complained too much, and marked you as a nuisance. Once I get logged out constantly, I'll know what has befallen me

At it's heart Civilization is a game about history. The replay is the history of your civilization. The replay is a part of the payoff for building your civilization and I would really love to see it put back in the game.

    Replay Viewer

I've posted an update of my replay viewer. It's still not user friendly unfortunately, but maybe someone here would like to give it a try? As it is based on me guessing file formats with a hex editor, I expect that there are quite a few replay files it can't read, and I could use some feedback...

More information look over here ---->

I could quote every single person here for describing how I feel about the missing replay feature, missing graphs, etc.

When you may put 50+ hours into a single game, being unceremoniously dumped to "done" screen is anti-climactic... and really kills the reason a lot of us played. It'd be like killing off all the great historians of our time. You wouldn't do that in RL, so why do it to the game about History and Civilization itself?

Would just like to add my voice to the above.
Would like to see Replay brought into this, and the graphs. I don't mind the too short "victory" vids but seeing what happened over the hours I was playing would be nice. Also in one game I didn't meet the Chinese until well into the late game and they had only one city, wasn't sure what they had been upto.

For those of you who previously followed the link to my replay to HTML exporter over on civfanatics, I've just uploaded a new version that improves compatibility with replays from games that had special options set or victory types disabled
    ---> http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=388160

I hope this helps some of you who really just want to watch replays after playing a game and don't only come here to add comments to a complaint thread (no offense intended - I miss the feature, too) ;-)

While I agree completely with the premise of the post; my problem is I can't finish the game to personally encounter this deficiency. Technical problems not withstanding.

I keep trying to finish games but the game is just too damn boring.

But again you are 100% correct. The final re-cap was one of the things that made victory so satisfying. Not surprised at all Shafer would decide to leave the re-cap out as it really does not comport with the board game feel he seems to be so enchanted with.

When a board game is over...it's just over.

why they would put sooo much heavy graphics into the game as to RECOMMEND a half gig of video memory, then snub the fanbase by not putting end-game cutscenes or replays into the package is a major slap in the face to the diehards
