Try disabling your sound driver in device manager. If the game doesn't crash then you know it's a sound issue, not a video issue. After that, don't know.

Disable automatic reboot on system failure:
1.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.
Click the Advanced tab.
3.
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4.
Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5.
Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
Now you should see the blue screen of death (BSOD) and your computer does not restart.
From the BSOD, you should see error code and possible driver/filename.

I have the same problems!!
The installation of BioShock worked fine, also the activation, but when I start the game the screen turn a kind of a second black and then I get a bluescreen with the code 0x0000008e.
I uninstalled nvidia drivers and tried the offical ones, the latest Beta drivers, changing RAM and turning off Overclocking didn't help.
This problem is only on XP! I tried it yesterday with Vista an it worked absolut correctly. I played maybe an hour without any problems. And it's the same PC!
My system:
Mainboard Asus P5KC
Core2Duo E6750
2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-RAM
GeForce 7600GT
internal Realtec Soundsystem
DirectX 9c
Windows XP Professional
I can play it on Vista, but my main system is XP and I would be happy when I could play BioShock on XP.
Greetings

I have XP Pro SP2 also... and an ATI X800XTPE, and mine does the same!! I bought the game tonight... and installed it. I checked that I am running the latest drivers etc first...
It installed fine, but when I run it... I get a black screen for a second or two, then a BSOD with the 0x0000008E error as above, then machine reboots.
Well, it looks like it's another game going back to the shop, especially after seeing just how many people on here are also having problems!!
I will wait for 24 hours though to make sure there are no "simple" fixes.
Greets all...

I had the same problem but managed to fix it. I think it was an issue with Daemon tools. Probably has something to do with the freaking copy protection on the game.
I managed to get the game to work by setting the number of virtual drives to zero in Daemon tools then closing Daemon tools. No problems running the game once I did that. Just to test it I re-enabled virtual drives and tried to play and got the same reboot so it was definitely an issue with daemon tools.
If you have Daemon tools installed give that a shot. Hope it works for you because this is an excellent game.

I do not have Daemon Tools installed, but you got me thinking. I do have the full bought version of Alcohol 120% installed with a virtual drive! I removed this virtual drive and the game now starts ok!
Onto the next problem, which I have seen posted here... I only get graphical blocks and no mouse cursor etc... it seems like there is a lot of work involved in getting this game working, but I will battle on for another few hours before I give up completely!
Thanks for the advice btw jjjayb!

ATI X800XT PE
This card seems not to support Shader Model 3, only 2.0b/2.0.
ATi Radeon X800 XT PE AGP (http://www.gpureview.com/radeon-x800-xt-pe-agp-card-39.html):
PS/VS Version: 2.0b/2.0
But see this:

STOP : 0x0000008E (0xC0000005,0x8053ABB7,0xAAB4B0C,0x00000000)
The fact is that ive installed deamon tools when i got Bioshock , but i don't understand "I managed to get the game to work by setting the number of virtual drives to zero in Daemon tools then closing Daemon tools" , how to do that?

Just from a quick glance, i notice you all have Windows XP Pro. Perhaps it's a simple dumb-luck situation, but just seems odd. Do you all have it fully updated? Meaning drivers, and Windows too? Also, do you have any anti-virus running, I once had a BSOD with a game due to Norton Anti-virus. Sadly, it's kind of hard to guess correctly any problem you don't see in front of you. But as a previous poster stated, a standard BSOD will give you a probable reason for the error. If you can follow his directions and post it here, we could give a better idea. Hope your issues get better, and don't be too hasty to return it, it is a good game, under the problems. I myself had to take liberties with my legally purchased copy of Doom3 and a couple of games that wouldn't run right. It's the "fun" and "delight" of being a PC gamer.
