View Full Version : An allusion to the plot of Bioshock.

Although please don't spoil anything, however I am keen to know just how much emphasis is put on the games plot. I loved the plot of the first two System Shocks, especially the second one, where I felt immersed in a pseudo-realistic very scarey science fiction novel. Will the ongoing story and narrative be as prominent, if not improved from the previous "Shock" games?

Thanks!!

All I can tell you is what I know, that the gameplay (not plot) is inspired/derived from System Shock 2, hence Bioshock being spiritual successor.

The plot, beyond the premise of the player crashing into the ocean and finding himself in an underwater utopian disaster, is also inspired from the work of Ayn Rand in the novel Atlas Shrugged (http://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Shrugged-Ayn-Rand/dp/0452011876/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-3659558-4029527?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1172974365&sr=8-1)

I've still yet to read the novel, only read Fountainhead myself. I'm sure another member can clue in any details & ideas from the story. Rest assured though that the source material is rich in plot, narrative details and philosphical discussion. Combined with the clever thinkers at Irrational, I can only assume a compelling and progressive story within Bioshock.

atlas shrugged was about the collapse of the world due to communism. the book is basically about why communism doesnt work. There is also a capitalist paradise that is set up in a valley in the rockeys. The thing I remember most about the book is that Wisconsin is a wasteland.

If BioShock draws some influence from Atlas Shrugged, then what about Isaac Asimov. I can totally see that somehow. I dunno maybe it's just the artDecco getting to me.

I don't think it will equal the level of Atlas Shrugged, that would make it too inaccessible to a large audience, too didactic. There's where some dumbing down could come from. However, I do trust that Irrational will extract the best playing experience from it given the premise that Rapture has setup.

So far from what I've seen from previews and Ken's modus operandi, my hopes are still at the plateau of expectation.

You sure it's not the crazy-ass mutated dooms-day scientists at the bottom of the ocean? I was always suspicious of those guys. ;)
