Probably indisputably, the most gripping, fascinating and intensely scarey gaming experiences on the PC, were with System Shock 1 and 2. This game is a fantasy game come true. The storyline, especially in System SHock 2, was of novel calibur, and was genuinely deep and scarey, with extremely cool alternate paths of ability development. Hopefully the ability development will be limited in this version also, so you can play through the game with different abilities, maybe this time with implications on the storyline.

Anyways, I believe that this game will probably be beyond its hype, and will definitely have a gameplay experience that is drastically superior to its already exquisite graphics.

Perhaps, Mass Effect looks nice as does Alan Wake. Really though it's all opinion. I mean, my favorite single player experience so far has been Condemned: criminal orgins, really gritty and atmospheric (but that's just for this 'next-gen' age).

Have you played any of the earlier System Shock games? The first system shocks interplayed exceptional story telling, with intense graphic suspense, and a deep and involving RPG style ability development system. What I am seeing in Bioshock so far, is all of those same elements, but taken to a grander scale, with cutting edge graphic and sound effects.
Condemned was a really very good game, I played through it probably five times. However the scare elements of the previous System Shocks definitely had a creepy edge on most games of its time. I remember when I was 14, and playing through System Shock 1. Ammo can be very scarce in that game, and I was late game in a part that required ascending a tower, except the lights had gone out and their were these vicious beasts running around in the darkness. They tear you apart if they catch up to you, and I could not defend myself, due to the ammo scarcity. I just remember getting freaked out and yelling while running through the darkness across the corridors to try to get into another elevator while the monsters chased me, their snarls and claws clacking closer and closer...although lesser known, I believe System Shock was more of the first "real" survival horror games, before Resident Evil, even if it was not as commercially successful. Regardless, Mass Effect is a contender, what with galaxy scale exploration and all. Personally I want both games alot, but Bioshock even more!!

Trust me, the tactical combat aspects, and the customization will be mechanically deeper than Mass Effect, and probably more beautiful. Anyways, they both will be great games, its just that Bioshock is a superior product in so many different ways. Anyone else have some input into this?

LOL, I was so certain and hardly anyone believed me...so many doubters, then "BOOM" everyone leaps onto the Bioshock bandwagon! :D

From what I remember playing System Shock, it seemed to have a larger game area then SS2 where you just hop across one ship during the game. Citadel Station had 8 or 9 floors. I always liked the "rearview mirror" powerup.

By todays gamer standards you can still play the original System Shock with all the audio logs. I have the original CD, but playing it off the CD in Win XP can be complicated, so someone wrapped up a nice neat package called System Shock Portable. It fits on a USB memory stick so you can take SS anywhere you go, or you can just install it to the C: drive. I think the whole game is less then 60 MB including audio logs so it's not a large dl. There is also a tweak to play the game at 1024 x 768... the monsters look pretty bad and pixelated but the environments are crisp and detailed. I played through the game again for the second time last year and enjoyed it as much as the first.

Peace

agreed.

although people should stop saying "this is the best next-gen game" because this is CURRENT GEN now, next-gen would be PS3/Xbox 720/Nintendo Poo or whatever

Well when I said "this will be the best next gen game" it was before Wii or PS3 had saturated the markets...now you can pretty much get any system so it is really the "current gen" now.

I'm curious as to what th enext crop of systems will portend...

I'm guessing all of the next-gen systems will have a Wii-style motion sensor. Sony tried to rip it off and got shot down already, and it's estimated that at the rate of sales of the Wii, there'll be a Wii in one-third of American households by 2011.

i don't know if this is a good thing. i don't think the wiimote sensor is good for all games.
