View Full Version : The word "noob"

For some reason I REALLY HATE THAT FREAKING WORD! It's a word that means absolutely nothing, "oh you're a noob you can't kill me and you don't know where all the weapons are." What you're using a shotgun what a "noob cannon." Guess what though, everyone is a noob at some point. A word which I take to mean "new at the game". For some reason playing with sniper rifles in any game ( usually one shot long range weapons) makes you awsome but playing with a shotgun or (god-forbid) a rocket launcher makes you a noob. I hate that people start trash talking and cursing the second some kid in a game starts getting alot of kills whilst using a weapon they wouldn't approve of. I say if it's in the game, it's not glitching, and the person playing is new or just enjoys using certain weapons and vehichles there is no reason to trash talk and certainly no reason to curse or boot them. Personally I am appalled at the language used by so called "Adults" directed towards kids playing on xbox live. First its "noob" then its "hit-puberty and then play this game" and then its straight up cursing or booting. Anyone else feel that SOME gamers are turning into stuck-up (can't believe we've gotten to the point were people are stuck up about their skills at gaming) losers? And how can we stop this trend?

it depends on the context. in the case of the xbox live (which i've never used), I am really quite shocked that these "adults" you speak of are so mean.

in the case of cs, everyone is comaritively a n00b. you are a n00b to someone who is better than you.

last night I was msning a friend and we were talking about pure pwnage, and then i started chanting quotes at him like, "loloolololololololol fag!" "you n00b" "i pwn you" "lololololololol!!!!1!!1!1!!!1" "i pwn n00bs"

he took this seriously and challenged me to css. in short, we both had not played in ages, and i won. :)

i like the word n00b. these days, its a cliche though.

I've got no real beef with the word as a contraction of newbie, but I don't like people flaming new players because they're not good or because they're not playing the way everybody else does.

Me, I try to encourage them, and show them the ropes. I also find myself reminding others that we were all once noobs, too.

I think much of the behavior I witness on xbox live is appalling. There were people telling blatantly racist jokes and using "n*gger" frequently on Shadowrun the other day. Is there some way to report those people and get them banned?

They are just assuming everyone in game is white and that its ok to say that or they just don't care? Perhaps the xbox shouldn't be sold in the south.

I've found that most of the people who use that word on xbox live are African American.

I have never run into that on shadowrun, or call of duty, or Rainbow Six or any game that isn't Halo or Gears of War.

Oh, and you can mute them. go to their gamercard, and click "mute" it's really easy and saves headaches. They can't be banned for using foul language, that's freedom of speech, especially if you're in Underground or Pro zones. As long as they aren't insulting you, or harassing you, you're fine.

Like many words, it's meaning is heavily influenced by context. My friends and I use the word to mean 'an online rookie', be it browsing the Internet or playing a multiplayer game - if you're making mistakes a beginner would make, you get chided as a noob. In this context, it's light humor. If you mean it in a truly degrading way, it doesn't matter what word is used.

:p Wow, you sound like a total newbie. Only a newb-o-cop would complain about being called noob, just because they are a little newbies with boobies.

What do you have to say that newb?

Xbox Live is pretty bad, but that's what happens when stoners and kids get their hands on mikes. I usually just don;t play with a mike unless I have friends.

I've had worse on the PC too, having a keyboard hurts just as much as the mike. Just stems from people needing to feel good about themselves by being mean to others.

I've never called anyone a noob simply because it's a stupid word. Also, just because someone is new and not as skilled as you are doesn't make you a better person.

Yes it does, calling people newbies lets them understand their own personal inferiority..

But really, calling people newbs is one oft he best things of playing online games. The funniest is calling really good players newbies, and then they try to defend themselves...LOL

CS isn't that bad, it's just there is no middle-ground. It seems you're either amazing at counterstrike or rubbish. I only us the word noob when I'm genuinly pissed off at someones stupidity, no matter his skill level or current score.

For example if somebody throws a grenade poorly and it bounces back and takes out me and half our tea, I'll shout something like..

"What the hell! If you can't use grenades don't F***ing throw them, why should we have to suffer your stupidity you noob!"

I don't even get whe gamers use trash talk at all, I play video games to have fun I don't really care how could anyone else is at a certain game. I think people who play online and think they are amazing because they can rake up alot of kills need to wake up and start living in the real world. Video Games are for Fun, people who take them seriously enough to curse and complain when people arent doing well need to get a life.

Generally people that use the word "n00b" are "n00bs" themselves with slightly more experience. To make themselves feel better they attack the newest of the new so they can point out how much better they are than the guy that just picked up the game 5 mins ago. What they don't realize is they are actually pointing out their own n00b-icity.

So, the next time someone calls you a n00b you can rest assured they are simply trying to make up for their own feelings of inadequacies.

Oh, and on XBL if you play with someone that's rude or a jerk make sure you give them a bad review, enough bad reviews and no one will play with them.

Couldn't say it any better.
Me, well I like to think I am not the best player, but I just have to call people n00bs sometimes. See, I'm an MLG player, so I know everything there is to know about the game, so say somebody tries to rush me with the shotty, I side-step, and lancer. When somebody comes to help them, I mow 'em both down with the lancer, all off-host. So because of all of this, I call everyone who uses annoying and kiddy tactics, a N00b.
Seriously, though, I hate those people that roadie-run to you, to try and shotty. I don't know how it became the silent trend in Gears. Either way, i just shrug it off, and if I'm feeling good, I pistol whip the heck out of them.

Kids that roadie-run glitch or Crab walk are always the hardist to kill. They keep going in circles till your down, they move to fast to kill with a shotty so i just chainsaw them. Its always funny to here kide cry when you kill them while glitch.

I think the most infuriating part of the insult is the inability to retaliate, i mean in real life if someone comes up and insults me as much as they can to make themselves feel better, i become homicidla and lay into them as much as i can, but no the net there is almost no way to retaliate to the bastards except to beet them and to insult them back.

I actually had a guy quit out on my friends ranked game yesterday, because one guy left in the middle of a match, so it was one on three, the other guy dies. So this dude goes for the crab-walk, to which me, and all my teammates, take out our lancers, and mow him down. So he then quits, and in the next round, his teammates quit out too.
That's the problem with MP in Gears, too many quiters and glitchers. Hell, some guy joined my team, only to later tell me that he was going to glitch.

Internet lends to all of us this aura of anonymity and invincibility. And console gamers, who, till rather recently, have been isolated from the phenomena, are now getting exposed to it full-time. It does not take long for the realization to sink in, that no matter what they say or do, nobody is going to come over and mash their face in - somrthing that would happen if they tried saying that face-to-face.
So, there are two kinds of people out there: those who have the cajones to deal with things of dangerous nature in real life, and those who don't. For the first kind, games are relaxing and fun, not a way to prove something to someone. For the second kind, the safe anynymity of Internet is the only way to satisfy their inner macho. Given their general lack of exposure to things that matter, they acquire an illusion that their online 'prowess' actually accounts for something.
Ah yes, and do not forget the mic thing. In ye aulde PC times before VoIP, you had to type. And you had to be some typist in order to both type things and still play decently. And typing required at least some thought process. And never forget - in games like say, Everquest, things you typed were logged - and a /report on a racist remark could get you banned. Now, you got your average neanderthal strapping on a headset and yelling into it whatever comes to mind, sans thought, censure or fear of repercussion.

Cheers.

How is your real life example any better behaviour? You'd become "homicidal"?? I think unfounded aggression stemming from leisure communication on the 'net should garner a proverbial look in the mirror, and not any form of retaliation.
